I wear a short-arm wetsuit in summer because of the sharpness of fins, but I never make them sharper. In the past I experimented with modifying fins, yet I found no real benefit in doing so. During the early years of testing Sonntag prototypes, I sailed with some extremely sharp designs—fins that were only about 1 mm thick even more than 10 mm from the trailing edge. Later, I reduced the sharpness on most of these fins. Another drawback also became clear: when hitting floating debris such as wood, a very sharp trailing edge is far more likely to tear or break. A broken trailing edge is often sticking out (and much slower).
In my view, fin sharpness is also unrelated to the sound a fin produces. That sound usually comes from a cavity in the profile—for example, at the trailing edge when it is not finished round or square. Sharpening can sometimes reduce noise, but making the trailing edge square is often just as effective. The trailing edge itself is always a challenge for fin builders to finish properly, but I would never select a fin based on sharpness alone. If possible, I would always prefer a less sharp fin with equal performance.
The sharpness of the leading edge has a major influence on fin behaviour and, in my opinion, should never be altered on a well-designed fin. By contrast, reducing the sharpness of the trailing edge usually has little effect on performance most of the time. In theory, a longer and sharper trailing edge could generate slightly more lift, but these differences are minor. They may become relevant when sailing with a powerful rig on speed strips above 40 knots in record attempts, but in most sessions there are far more important factors.
At some point, every fin will experience flow disturbance at the trailing edge. Under perfect conditions, a sharper trailing edge may delay this effect slightly. However, in normal choppy water there is already plenty of air around the fin, so disturbance at the trailing edge occurs regardless—making sharpness far less relevant. For me, what really counts is the overall balance between board, sail, fin, and rider.
The outline of the fin is another point of caution. Models such as the Sonntag SL-Weed, Sonntag GPS-Weed, and Tribal MK2 have very pointy tips, which can be dangerous. Most of my other fins have a more conventional, squarer tip and are therefore less hazardous.
I wouldn't worry to much to make fins a bit less sharp and safe. Unless you are at Luderitz at this moment
