Slalom to return to Pozo for the first time in 14 years
The Gran Canaria PWA World Cup, known for its epic jumping and high wind wave battles, to see high speed slalom once again! |
Since the last time that the PWA slalom fleet descended on Pozo Izquierdo in 2009, the venue has been host to some of the most spectacular wave sailing events ever and has, rightfully, become synonymous with names like Moreno, Koster, Browne and Campello, through their aerial antics and unwavering courage in the 30 – 50 knot winds. This year will be no different with the event being the third 5 Star event of the Unified PWA / IWT Wave Tour. Daida Moreno launches into a huge stalled forward at Pozo Historically though, Pozo has also been home to the most extreme, nail biting, high octane down to the wire slalom in the history of the sport. Now that legacy will be reborn as names like Rutkowski, Lemeteyer, Mortefon, Iachino, and Soe rise to the challenge and try to etch their initials on this most prestigious of slalom contests, alongside names like Dunkerbeck, Pritchard, Bringdal and Mueller. High wind slalom at Pozo in 2009 Form the 1st to the 9th of July, wave and slalom sailors alike, from the men’s and women’s fleets in both disciplines, will take up station on the beach at Pozo, ready for what will be an epic test of humankind versus the elements. Whether its launching a wave board as high as possible, or desperately trying to keep a slalom board down, they will all have to bring their A game if they want to succeed. Koster spots his landing In addition to the pro fleets, there will also be the renowned youth and junior contests that never fail to impress, and also a masters contest for the first time! Jimmy Diaz hunts down the pack at speed Jimmy Diaz, PWA Chairman said: “This is another massive step forwards for our sport, not only continuing the huge traditions of wave sailing that Pozo embodies, but now to be able to bring back what many see as the ultimate slalom showdown, and show the world what racing is all about. On behalf of all the sailors and staff of the PWA, and windsurfers everywhere, I want to extend our thanks to Bjorn,Victor and all the team for all of their hard work in making this event a reality, building on the great work that Daida and Iballa Moreno did to keep growing the event in the years before”.
