Foil Slalom set to make a flying entrance on to the 2025 PWA World Tour on the beautiful French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe

After the winter break, Foil Slalom is set to make a spectacular return to our screens as the best racers in the world prepare to battle it out on the beautiful French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe for the 2025 Riviera Guadeloupe PWA Windsurf World Cup (22nd-26th April), which is an exciting new addition to the calendar.

Located in the French Caribbean, Guadeloupe, consisting of five islands, is a tropical paradise boasting pristine white sand beaches, incredible turquoise waters and most importantly, from a windsurfing point of view at least, reliable trade winds, which make it a world class spot for windsurfing. With winds generally in the 15-20 knots range the stage is now set for Foil Slalom to make an adrenaline fuelled return after the winter hiatus. All that’s left to do is see who the main players are, then you can sit back, relax and let Ben Proffitt guide you through the best of the action via the PWA live stream - for what should hopefully be an exciting five days of racing.

A glimpse of what's to come over the next five days

    Foil Slalom

    Women’s

As the reigning world champion Justine Lemeteyer (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) will start the new season as the top seed and will therefore be favourite in Guadeloupe. The 22-year-old was in devastating form last year, registering two event victories from three events, while she finished second in the other. Lemeteyer will be hoping to hit the water flying on her new gear having transferred to PATRIK over the winter.

    83e9ef4970.jpg

    Justine Lemeteyer

Lemeteyer’s most obvious threat would normally be Marion Mortefon (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils), who is the current vice-world champion, but she will be absent from proceedings in Guadeloupe as she is currently expecting a baby. That opens the door for 2023 world champion, Blanca Alabau (WeOne / Severne Sails), while Lina Eržen (Starboard / S2Maui / Starboard Foils) should also be a major threat having won her debut event in Japan in 2023, while she completed the podium in Japan in 2024 In what was her only appearance of the season.

    da90d2836e.jpg

    Marion Mortefon racing last season

Elsewhere, 15-year-old Bobbi-Lynn De Jong (Starboard / NeilPryde) will be hoping to battle for the podium positions after finishing fourth overall in 2024, as will former youth vice-world champion Mae Davico (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) and Femke van der Veen (Starboard / Severne Sails), while rising talent Tess Sermet (NeilPryde) completes the lineup.

    Bobbi-Lynn De Jong

    Men’s

Pierre Mortefon (Phantom / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) will start the opening event of the season as the favourite in Guadeloupe. The Frenchman almost didn’t put a foot wrong during the 2024 season, culminating in both the Foil Slalom and Slalom X world titles, as he never finished outside of the top two at any of the three Foil Slalom events. Mortefon will be hoping to continue that rich vein of form and incredible level of consistency as he looks to make a strong start to his title defence.

    8ed163359d.jpg

    Reigning world champion, Pierre Mortefon

However, he will face a stern test to make that happen as there is a stacked lineup in Guadeloupe and as we’ve seen over the last few seasons the standard is currently incredibly high across the fleet with almost any sailor capable of qualifying for Winners’ Finals. There are a couple of very noticeable absentees though in the form of Johan Søe (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils), who won both of the events he attended in 2024, and last year’s world No.3 - Enrico Marotti (JP / NeilPryde) - which will make things slightly easier.

Amongst the favourites will be last year’s vice-world champion, Daniele Benedetti (Duotone Windsurfing). The Italian won his maiden event on the World Tour in 2024 to take the world title race to a decider in Japan before just losing out, but he’ll want to make sure he keeps his name in the world title conversation early on in the season. Benedetti also transferred to Duotone Windsurfing over the close season, so it’ll be interesting to see how he adapts to his new gear.

    Daniele Benedetti

Elsewhere, former two-time world champion Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails) will also be hoping to make a solid start to the season as will the likes of; 2023 vice-world champion Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Point-7 / Z-Foils), who has moved to Point-7 over the winter, former world champion, Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde), flying Dutchman Jordy Vonk (Duotone Windsurfing), and Nico Prien (JP / NeilPryde). Unfortunately though his compatriot, Michele Becker (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils), has had to withdraw from proceedings due to a back injury. Meanwhile, if things click into gear then Bruno Martin (JP / NeilPryde / AL360 Foils), who finished third in Sylt last season, can also be a major contender.

    Matteo Iachino

With Guadeloupe being in the French Caribbean there is obviously a strong French presence in the fleet - they make up just under half of the fleet - so there will be plenty of French hopes for the local crowd to get behind, namely; Alexis Mathis (Tabou / GA Sails), Cedric Bordes (Severne / Severne Sails / PATRIK Foils), William Huppert (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils), Alexandre Cousin (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils), Pierre Macquaert (JP / NeilPryde), Benoit Merceur (Starboard / Severne Sails) and Lohan Jules (AV Boards / S2Maui / PATRIK).

    Alexis Mathis

Meanwhile, the likes of John Soukos (WeOne / Challenger Sails / F4 Foils) and Cyril Evrard (PATRIK / Challenger Sails / PATRIK Foils) - both 21 - Scotty Stallman (Tabou / GA Sails) and Hugo Sjoberg (Tabou / GA Sails) - both 23 - will be continuing to try and climb the ladder.

Preparing in paradise as windsurfing shows why patience is key

The opening day of the Riviera Guadeloupe PWA Windsurf World Cup saw sailors registering between 9-11am - local time - before the first skippers’ meeting of the week took place at 1pm. Unfortunately, as the nature of this wonderful sport goes - the conditions failed to play ball, but come the end of the event there should hopefully be plenty of action.

    GL25_ls_Aerial_views_00773.jpg

    Tropical Paradise

From a spectators points of view that actually makes things pretty interesting as the best racers in the world will be given no margin for error…

Earlier in the day we spoke to potentially one of the top contenders on the men’s side, Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde), who had this to say: “I arrived about five days ago. I spent three days on the water. Really nice, you know, it's this tropical vibe, you get to sail in boardshorts, the water is like a soup, and we had actually good conditions. I think it's the curse of the first year of a PWA event somewhere. If you look at least at my time, every time we go somewhere for the first time, we get unlucky with the forecast. The first time we went to Japan we didn't race, same in Marignane etc. The first time we went to [Lake] Garda, which is about the most reliable place in May in the world, I think, we had terrible weather and we barely squeaked in a few eliminations. So, yeah, sooner or later, the weather will change, of course, but let's see. We’re probably going to have to wait until towards the end of the comp to race.”

    GL25_ls_POL23_00587_copy.jpg

    Maciek Rutkowski

Although conditions don’t look too promising for tomorrow, the good news is that the second half of the event should hopefully provide much of the high-octane racing we are all yearning for.

    Welcher Event ist dann weniger?

Bei 4 ausgetragenen Events zählen eh nur 3.

Ist natürlich äusserst riskant, jetzt schon auf einen Streicher zu spekulieren.

    Hängepartie auf Guadeloupe:

The waiting game continues in Guadeloupe, so we caught up with Amado Vrieswijk

The second day of the 2025 Riviera Guadeloupe PWA Windsurf World Cup proved to be another test of patience as the wind continued to not make an appearance. One forecast suggested that there might be a small window of opportunity between 11am-2pm local time, but unfortunately the wind god’s failed to provide the goods on this occasion.

    GL25_ls_Skippers_00995.jpg

    Event HQ - tropical paradise

With the contest being called off at 2:30pm, we managed to catch up with Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Point-7 / Z-Foils), who transferred to Point-7 over the winter and is hoping to be battling it out at the front of the pack again:

    GL25_ls_Amado_01059.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

Hi Amado, after a long time with Severne Sails, how is it changing to a different brand of sail?

I’d been on Severne for the last 13 years and before that I was on Hot Sails Maui, but to be honest it feels great to change to a new sponsor as it just gives me more motivation and more fire. I was just looking for something new. You know, after 13 years — all respect to Severne, there were no complaints there, the gear and everything was great, but I was just looking for something new, and so far it’s been very good. Different people, different sails, a different type of sail of course, so just getting to know the new gear and learning how to rig it, to tune it and stuff is just very motivating for me.

You got super close to the world title in 2023 - were you disappointed with last year and what is your goal for this season?

In 2023 I wasn’t really sad or disappointed with the result to be honest because I wasn’t even expecting to be in that position. I placed my goals much more on 2024 as I did work very hard for it, but for different reasons, things just didn’t quite work out last year.

This year I feel more comfortable - I feel fitter than ever, stronger than ever, and especially when it comes to the gear I feel more comfortable than ever - and in foil racing, being comfortable is basically everything that you need. The only question now is if it’s fast enough… but at least now I can just focus on racing and not having to focus on just staying on the board because last year I wasn’t able to fight at the front.

You attended the TWS winter training in Tenerife - how was it?

Tenerife was great. This was the third year that I’ve been going there. Last year I was there for a month and a half, and this year I was there for a month. To be honest, in El Médano we did not have that much wind and what wind we had was very weird wind from different directions, so training-wise it wasn’t the greatest.

But I received all the new gear there - all the new Point-7’s - so I’ve been sailing a lot, and I still spent plenty of time on the water. The month was not great to be able to test everything and figure out everything, as every day was different, and the wind was changing by the hour, so it wasn’t easy. For just sailing by yourself it was easy and fun to get a feeling of the new gear, but until now, basically until this event, I didn’t really have a proper time to test. When you’ve been training alone, it’s also very hard to see/know where you are at.

But in general Tenerife is great as you have a professional setup for racing itself. The starts are on point and most of the main guys are there, so training with them is excellent as you can more or less see where you are at - even if everyone isn’t on the latest gear. I think this year I only had 7 or 8 training days in a month, but great training nonetheless.

Although now it isn't windy, how's Guadeloupe?

I think we are just very, very unlucky with the wind at the moment, the last few weeks have been windy here and I’ve been back home [Bonaire] and I was sailing on 5.7m everyday and they more or less have the same wind conditions here.

I haven’t seen that much of the island, but everything looks great with the setup here. The airs warm, the waters warm, we’ve got white sand and palm trees and the event site is also really well set out. We are just waiting for the wind at the moment. Tristan [Algret] has done a great job with his team. I think tomorrow probably looks light again, but then hopefully Friday and Saturday we have at least enough to race in some light stuff.

Thanks, Amado. Good luck for the comp once the wind arrives.

The forecast for Thursday looks marginally better than today, so hopefully with a bit of luck the world’s best racers may get an opportunity to hit the racecourse. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 8am (GMT-4) with a first possible start at 9am.

    Das war Tag 3:

Matteo Iachino produces sensational performance to lead men’s, while Justine Lemeteyer picks up where she left off last season to prove she’s the one to beat

After a quiet opening couple of days to the 2025 Riviera Guadeloupe PWA Windsurf World Cup, Day 3 proved to be the day we’ve all been waiting for as the world’s best racers were unleashed onto the racecourse for the first time this season. The opening event of the year is always an intriguing affair as you get to see for the first time where people are at after the winter break and it didn’t disappoint with a combination of high octane racing, big crashes and racing incidents. Guadeloupe also provided a stern all-round test with varying water conditions and wind strengths (7-20 knots) keeping the elite on their toes throughout. At the close of play though it’s reigning world champion - Justine Lemeteyer (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) - and Italy’s Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails), who head up the event rankings after six eliminations for the women and three eliminations for the men.

    Seemless Transition

Justine Lemeteyer (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) may have changed sponsors over the winter, but the result is the same - for now at least - as the reigning world champion produced a dominant display, which saw the 22-year-old secure four bullets out of a possible six, while she finished second in the other two eliminations to complete a solid first day of racing for the 2025 season. Lemeteyer was consistently on point with her starts and clocked some impressive top speeds to show that she will be the one that everyone else has to beat.

    GL25_sl_FRA171_01174_copy.jpg

    Justine Lemeteyer celebrates

Lina Eržen (Starboard / S2Maui / Starboard Foils) is Lemeteyer’s main threat with the 19-year-old able to deny Lemeteyer on two occasions. The Slovenian may be slightly ruing going over early in Elimination 6 as this has given Lemeteyer a bit more breathing room, but Eržen, who has already won an event on the World Tour, showed that she is more than willing to take it to the reigning world champion. At the close of play Eržen trails by 2.6 points, and with hopefully plenty more racing to come, there is everything still to play for.

    GL25_sl_SLO51_01118_copy.jpg

Lina Eržen goes head-to-head with Justine Lemeteyer

The top two are well clear of the rest of the fleet after the opening six eliminations, but the battle for the last place on the event podium is far from over with just four points separating third to sixth place. As things stand Blanca Alabau (WeOne / Severne Sails) currently occupies third place, but is just one point ahead of Femke van der Veen (Starboard / Severne Sails), who signed off the day with an excellent second place, while Bobbi-Lynn De Jong is fifth, just ahead of Mae Davico (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) in sixth. Davico started the day brightly with back-to-back third places, but slid down the leader board by the end of the day after three consecutive with places.

    Men’s

    A Perfect Day

In his own words, Matteo Iachino enjoyed arguably the best start to a season he’s ever had - for an opening day at least - as the Italian reeled off a clinical hat-trick to take a stranglehold over the event rankings. Most sailors have a particular setup that they prefer, so Iachino’s performance is made all the more impressive as he was able to dominate each elimination on three different sail sizes as the wind greatly fluctuated throughout the day. The 35-year-old possesses a wealth of experience and is almost always consistent, but you have to go back to Noumea in 2019 for the last time the two-time world champion completed a three-timer. The ominous thing for his rivals is that he looks like he has a bit extra in the tank when needed, as proved in Elimination 3 when he powered out of the first gybe to pass current world champion Pierre Mortefon (Phantom / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils). Once at the front of the pack, Iachino never looked like relinquishing the lead and if he can maintain anywhere near the level of form he showed today then he’ll prove almost impossible to stop as he won every single heat that he sailed.

    GL25_sl_ITA140_01143_copy.jpg

    Matteo Iachino in the zone

Mortefon, who is Iachino’s closest challenger after the opening three eliminations - currently trailing by 3.9 points - looked on it throughout, but sometimes you just have to accept that someone else is in unstoppable form. The current Foil Slalom and Slalom X world champion finished the day with three second places, but knows he will have to find an extra gear if he is to reel in Iachino. The two heavy weights have enjoyed a superb rivalry throughout their illustrious careers and it’ll be intriguing to see what Mortefon can muster up over the next two days.

    GL25_sl_FRA14_01189_copy.jpg

Pierre Mortefon firmly in the mix

    Comeback King

Alexandre Cousin (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) flirted with quarterfinal exits in both Elimination 1 and 3, but produced miraculous comebacks in both, to then qualify for each Winners’ Final to deservedly end the day in the top three. The Frenchman first denied fellow countryman Pierre Macquaert (JP / NeilPryde) with a superb last gybe in Heat 3 of Elimination 1, before salvaging an almost unsalvageable position in the opening heat of Elimination 3 as he powered past Nico Prien (JP / NeilPryde) in the closing stages of the final reach to snatch the last qualifying place - when quite frankly - he had no right to do so.

    GL25_sl_FRA752_01105_copy.jpg

    Comeback King - Alexandre Cousin

Jordy Vonk (Duotone Windsurfing) was a name on the lips of his rivals before the start of the racing and the flying Dutchman showed why today as he to qualified for all three Winners’ Finals to end the day in fourth and is only four points off of third. Vonk recorded results of a fourth, a fifth and a seventh.

    GL25_sl_NED69_01164_copy.jpg

    Jordy Vonk gybes

    Hitting the Crossbar

It was a day where the top seeds dominated with all of the current top six boasting a 100% qualifying record for the Winners’ Finals. However, for Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Point-7 / Z-Foils) - 5th - and Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde) - 6th - it was a slight case of missed opportunities as neither sailor could really land a telling blow in any of the Winners’ Finals.

    GL25_sl_NB20_01287_copy.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

Vrieswijk finishes the day with a fifth, a seventh and an eighth, while Rutkowski recorded a sixth and two eighths. So while things may not have really clicked when it came to crunch time today, they do both at least, have solid platforms on which to build upon.

    GL25_sl_POL23_01098_copy.jpg

    Maciek Rutkowski

Fellow Frenchman, Alexis Mathis (Tabou / GA Sails) and William Huppert (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils), are currently tied on 23 points - 7th and 8th in the event rankings - with Mathis just ahead on countback. Both sailors qualified for one Winners’ Final a piece, while they both won a b-final each, respectively.

    GL25_sl_FRA997_01285_copy.jpg

    Alexis Mathis

The top ten is currently completed by Benoit Merceur (Starboard / Severne Sails) - 9th - and Sem Stroosma (Tabou / GA Sails) - 10th - who will be delighted to have qualified for his first Winners’ Final in Elimination 1.

    GL25_sl_FRA1159_01107_copy.jpg

    Benoit Merceur

The top ten are currently well clear of the rest of the chasing pack, but with a discard to come after the completion of Elimination 4, things can still change very quickly. 19-year-old Sacha Fortune (Duotone Windsurfing) recorded a tenth and a fourteenth either side of a quarterfinal exit, while Scotty Stallman (Tabou / GA Sails / F4 Foils) will also be looking to discard a quarterfinal exit tomorrow. The Brit was able to win the b-final of Elimination 2, so both of them stand to gain substantial ground depending on how Elimination 4 plays out.

    GL25_sl_FRA665_01096_copy.jpg

    Sacha Fortune

Things may not have quite clicked for Lars Poggemann (S2Maui / F4 Foils) in the opening couple of eliminations as the 24-year-old suffered back-to-back quarterfinal exits, but something clicked for the German in the last elimination of the day as he booked his place in a maiden Winners’ Final - eventually finishing in a career best sixth place to finish the day ranked 13th.

The top 16 is currently completed by Cedric Bordes (Severne Windsurfing / PATRIK Foils) - 14th - who will also be looking to discard a quarterfinal exit, Pierre Macquaert - 15th - and Lohan Jules (AV Boards / S2Maui / PATRIK Sails), who recorded two solid twelfth places, but also suffered a quarterfinal exit. Expect plenty of changes after the completion of the next elimination.

    GL25_sl_GPE1052_01271_copy.jpg

Lohan Jules enjoyed a decent day

Current vice-world champion - Danielle Benedetti (Duotone Windsurfing) - has left himself with plenty of work to do after a disappointing first day. The Italian successfully qualified for the opening Winners’ Final - 7th - but then failed to progress from the quarterfinals in Eliminations 3 and 4 - leaving him in a lowly 22nd place at the close of play.

    GL25_sl_ITA60_01091_copy.jpg

    Daniele Bendetti

One of the incidents of the day, which caused plenty of discussion online, involved former teammates Nico Prien (JP / NeilPryde) and Bruno Martini (I-99 / S2Maui / AL360 Foils). Prien was leading the b-final of Elimination 2, but was seemingly unaware of Martini’s presence as he entered the gybe at the last. Martini sensed the opportunity to dive inside, but in doing so, caught Prien unaware, which ultimately led to them colliding and crashing out as they went from first and second in Heat 7 to eventually finish 14th and 16th respectively for the elimination. Both sailors will be hoping to bounce back tomorrow after a slightly underwhelming first day of racing. Prien is currently ranked 18th, while Martin finds himself in 20th.

    GL25_sl_GER7_01165_copy.jpg

    Nico Prien

The forecast for Friday looks slightly lighter than today with winds of 9-13 knots currently predicted, which should hopefully still allow plenty more racing. The sailors will meet again at 8am (GMT-4) tomorrow morning for the skippers’ meeting with the racing commencing from 9am onwards - conditions depending.

    Das war Tag 4:

Stormy skies scupper the wind meaning we had the chance to catchup with Lina Eržen and Blanca Alabau

The penultimate day of the 2025 Riviera Guadeloupe PWA Windsurf World Cup proved to be another day of waiting as the wind failed to arrive. For brief moments it looked as though the wind would fill in, but stormy skies meant that it never really settled, so things remain as they were at the start of the day with Justine Lemeteyer (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) and Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails) leading the event with a day to go.

With plenty of downtime whilst waiting for the wind, we caught up with the current number two and three in the women’s fleet - Lina Eržen (Starboard / S2Maui / Starboard Foils) and Blanca Alabau (WeOne / Severne Sails):

    GL25_sl_SLO51_01111_copy.jpg

Lina Eržen currently second in the event rankings

Hi Lina, originally we saw you competing on the PWA Freestyle World Tour - how did you transition into racing and what made you make the move into racing over Freestyle?

During the pandemic there was not a lot competition for Freestyle and I love to compete, so it was hard to train, but not being able to show the work in the field. In the mean time the new iQFOiL class was introduced to us. I remember my father telling me that it’s a foiling class which can eventually lead to the Olympics. I knew how to foil already just on some smaller gear, and of course as a dream for any professional athlete, I wanted to represent my country in the Olympicsl. Once I got caught up in the racing I never looked back.

Are you still Freestyling in your free sailing? And do you think we could see you make an appearance on the Freestyle Tour again?

I haven’t Freestyled in quite some time. I put a lot of time towards the Olympic class and all the stuff it requires me to do (fitness, testing, training camps…). I also go to university, so there isn’t a lot of time to rest and I need to spend my time wisely. You never know what the future can hold for you, so I cannot say I will never make an appearance somewhere.

You’ve made a great start to your racing life on the PWA - winning your opening event in Japan in 2023 and then finishing third there last year - what are your expectations for the season ahead and are you planning on competing on the whole circuit?

This year I will be competing on the whole circuit. I always seek perfection in any aspect, and with that said, my goal is set as well.

You came from competing in the iQFOiL - are you still chasing another Olympic campaign?

It’s my dream and goal to compete in another Olympic games in the iQFOiL class.

Thanks, Lina. Good luck for the rest of the contest.

    GL25_sl_E3_01261_copy.jpg

    Blanca Alabau

Hi Blanca, over the winter you changed to WeOne boards - how's the change going?

Winter was really nice. I've been training in Tenerife. The change of the boards was actually a really good move, I think, for me because it makes me super motivated. I find more motivation to push the winter training and the board feels super good. It's super steady, it's fast, it's all around really good and it's super nice to be more involved in the development and work with this team - that’s super nice for me.

Last year you came 3rd overall - what are your goals for 2025?

My goal as every year is winning the title and last year I was a bit down, or a bit less motivated, because I had a really tough year, especially compared to the years before, and I wanted to give myself a bit of a different vibe in in training and be more relaxed and push myself, which is what I thought I had to do. However, this winter it was completely different, I was super motivated training in the water every day, at the gym, and I recovered from my injuries, so finally I feel ready to give my all this year.

How's Guadeloupe been for you this far?

Guadeloupe has been really nice. We’ve been staying at Tristan Algret’s house [Event Organiser] and he’s been taking care of us. We had some great days sailing on 5-6m sails before the event, but then I lost my foil, which made me a bit nervous, so I didn’t start the event the way I wanted. I was feeling confident, but then this knocked my confidence a bit, which meant I didn’t feel too confident yesterday, but in the afternoon I sailed better, so my confidence is coming back. I know I have the speed and that my gybes are good, so step-by-step my confidence is improving and I know I can compete.

Thanks, Blanca good luck on the final day of the contest.

The forecast for the final day of the 2025 Riviera Guadeloupe PWA Windsurf World Cup looks better than today with winds between 9-15 knots currently forecast, which should hopefully lead to an exciting finale to the event. The sailors will meet at 8am (GMT-4) for the skippers’ meeting with the racing commencing from 9am onwards.
