Event Preview: The first stop on the treacherous Canary island bout of competition heads to the island of Lanzarote for a four-day freestyle extravaganza.
The Canary Islands events are the most eagerly anticipated leg of the PWA World Tour; offering a variety of challenging conditions. The exposed sailing area’s combine powerful swells, flat water and relentless wind, providing the perfect playground for windsurfing’s elite to fight it out for first place.
The enchanting town of Costa Teguise on Lanzarote’s Eastern Coast is set to host freestyle’s crème de la crème as they embark on round five of the 2011 world tour. Boasting consistent trade winds, scorching sun and ruffled water’s, La Chucharas beach attracts windsurfers from all over Europe. Expect to see a combination of explosive aerial and sliding maneuvers as the sailors take advantage of the incredible conditions.
What the deal?
A four day freestyle show down, launching into action on June 30 - July 03 2011, featuring the elite of the men’s PWA freestyle discipline going head to head for a share of the event’s €30,000 prize purse, and crucial mid-season points towards the overall tour rankings.
Who to watch
Fresh from battle in the Caribbean the points are tied at the top, the aerial king Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra) and European freestyle wizard Steven Van Broeckhoven (F2 / Gaastra) each hold two event titles on the 2011 tour, expect to see the arch rivals going hell for leather in an attempt to win the judges affections.
Yet to secure an event victory on the 2011 world tour, four times world champion Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North) is likely to take advantage in the tough Canary Island conditions, to make his return to number one.
The double master Davy Scheffers (Tabou / Gaastra) will be on the hunt to return to the top positions, after a tough draw in Aruba saw his early demise from the competition. Scheffers will be looking to use Lanzarote to cover up any mistakes.
Bonaire stylists Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic) and Tonky Frans (Tabou / Gaastra) will be heading to the island to unleash their most outrageous gravity defying maneuvers in an effort to break into the top three.
The consistent Canadian Phil Soltysiak (Starboard / Dakine) will be displaying his flair, giving it everything he has got in a bid to make it into the top five.
Also in the mix, up and coming hot shot Dieter Van Der Eyken (Starboard / Severne) has been delivering consistent scores throughout the 2011 season and currently sits in 8^th, watch out for Van Der Eyken as he continues to ruffle the feathers at the top.
French freestyle icon’s Anthony Ruenes (Tabou / Simmer) and Nicolas Akgazciyan (Starboard / Gun) famous for their technical ability will be ready for war in order to defend their positions in the top ten.
Lanzarote will also witness the debut performance from Brit, Phil Richards (Fanatic / Severne). Keep an eye on Richard’s as he attempts to make his mark in battle against the worlds best.
Keep your eyes peeled from 30^th June, as history has proven the Canary Islands are a catalyst for innovation, expect to see new moves, shake’s ups at the top and an array of acrobatic excellence from the world’s finest freestylers. Day 1: The world’s greatest freestyle sailors descend on to the golden sands of Costa Teguise in Lanzarote, however fluctuating conditions led to a gentle start to competition.
The opening day of competition in Lanzarote kicked off to a relaxing start, allowing the sailors to prepare their equipment and focus their minds on the challenges ahead. Once the formalities of registration and the skippers meeting were completed the trade winds had risen to around 15-20 knots allowing the competitors to hit the water at 2pm on the dot and the action to unfold.
On sails around 5.3m, the sailors ploughed their way through the opening nineteen heats of the single elimination. However as the afternoon progressed the wind retreated forcing competition on hold until the riders were ultimately released at 5pm.
The initial rounds of the competition saw many of the top sailors display their most mind-blowing tricks to dispose of their opponent’s and to express their dominance on the Canary Islands. Belgian freestyle extraordinaire Steven Van Broeckhoven (F2 / Gaastra) quickly defeated Jakub Kosmowski (RRD / Simmer) and Quincy Offringa (Starboard) with his enormous Culos and Konos. Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra) also looked to be on great form, filling his score sheet in record time against Edvan De Souza Pedro (RRD / Simmer) granting his pass into the semi-finals. Fellow Bonaire superstar Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic) also looked to be comfortable in the difficult conditions sailing an unbelievable heat to defeat Andy Chambers (JP / NeilPryde), landing almost every move in his book of tricks to secure his access into the third round.
Round two saw a close heat between rivals, Davy Scheffers (Tabou / Gaastra) and Dieter Van Der Eyken (Starboard / Severne). Van Der Eyken opened the heat on fine form delivering a colossal kono and a shaka whilst Scheffers struggled to fit his big moves in. The second half of the heat saw the tables turn, Van Der Eyken had run out of steam, whilst Scheffers was on the way up as he performed a perfect air bob and double spock in the choppy waters. Leaving the judges with a tough decision, ultimately Scheffers was the chosen one seeing him secure his place in the next round.
The big upset of the day came between Anthony Ruenes (Tabou / Simmer) and Tonky Frans (Tabou / Gaastra). The sailors each sailed an exceptional heat, landing all the big moves with faultless precision. Tonky separated the pair with the first back loop of the competition; however Ruenes quickly fought back with a gigantic one-handed shaka, and a no-handed funnel. It came down to a 2-1 decision from the judges and just half a point separating the sailors in favor of Ruenes.
The final heat in the second round featuring, Israel’s Yarden Meir (Fanatic / Simmer) vs. four times world champion Jose Estredo (Fanatic / North) and Yegor Popretinskiy (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) vs. Brazil’s Ian Mouro Lemos (JP / NeilPryde) was run twice but was cancelled due to fading winds.
The action will continue tomorrow with skipper’s meeting commencing at 10:30 am first possible start to competition at 11am.

Day 2: A day of contrast in Lanzarote, marginal conditions kept the sailors on hold throughout the day until a sudden burst of breeze stirred up a frenzy to finish.
A calm morning in Costa Teguise ensured the sailors we placed on standby from the word go, and the judges were left with the task of monitoring the wind.
As the morning progressed the trade winds kicked in allowing Steven Van Broeckhoven (F2 / Gaastra), Remko De Zeeuw (F2 / Gaastra) and Yarden Meir (Fanatic / Simmer), to hit the water to take advantage of the occasional gust to pull switch chachoos and the occasional culo. However large patches of light wind ensured the conditions were unsuitable for a fair competition to take place.
The sailors spent the afternoon waiting for the wind to fill in, listening to the tunes on the beach and relaxing in the main tent. As the sun dipped down it was all change, Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra), Jose ‘ Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North) and Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic) were first to test the waters, pumping into spock culos, shakas and double funnels, providing the crowds with a taste of the action to come.
Head judge Duncan Coombs announced competition would commence from 5pm, allowing three heats to be completed before the conditions died off.
Three heats full of excitement saw the demise of Meir and Yegor Popretinskiy (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) to world champion Estredo and Bjorn Saragoza (Starboard / Hot Sails).
Davy Scheffers (Tabou / Gaastra) took on the mighty Thode in heat 21. Scheffers opened the heat with full force knowing it would take a lot to defeat his opponent. Thode fought hard however the light winds were causing a few problems in Thode’s routine, seeing a surprised Scheffers work his way into the semi-final. Meanwhile Van Broeckhoven was going about landing his perfect power moves in the challenging conditions, whilst Phil Soltysiak (Starboard / Dakine) looked to be struggling to find enough power to complete his maneuvers.
Heat 22 saw Anthony Ruenes (Tabou / Simmer) take down Taty Frans with his collection of carefully polished maneuvers, displaying his one handed shaka, that saw him defeat Taty’s brother Tonky Frans (Tabou / Gaastra) yesterday. On the other side of the heat Estredo flew past Saragoza who was struggling to deal with the complex conditions.
The PWA took advantage of the down time during the day, and caught up with four times world champion Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North) to find out his thoughts on the 2011 tour.
How are you feeling, entering this event after a slower start to the year than usual?
“It feels great to be here in Lanzarote for my sixth time. I always feel good when I am here, the conditions are great and the people are really friendly, I feel confident that I will sail well here.”
Do you prefer the Canary Island leg of the tour?
“I think the Canary Islands are great for freestyle, the wind is really strong and I really like the waves here and in Fuerteventura.”
Why do you think Kiri and Steven have won the events so far this season?
“They are both sailing really well this year and they improved a lot especially in the light winds. I don’t really like lighter wind so I haven’t been training in them, that much.”
Do you think you are more suited to the conditions in the Canary Islands than the earlier events on the tour?
I much prefer the stronger winds and I think I am much better in them; I need the stronger winds to do the power moves and the aerial moves.
You have been doing a few waves events; do you hope to do a few more?
I would like to do the entire wave series, I really enjoy the events, they are great for practicing and we will see how I do. I would also like to do some slalom events too; I have done some at home, but maybe not for a few years. I will concentrate on the wave and freestyle tour for now.”
Where do you hope to come in Lanzarote?
“I think the conditions are on their way, so I should be able to take advantage of the stronger winds and the waves to pull my air moves and hopefully I will do well.”

Day 3: Four times world champion Gollito Estredo returns to form and storms his way to first place in the single elimination.
Once again the freestyle fleet were greeted with a relaxing morning, providing them with the perfect opportunity to tune their equipment, discuss the previous day’s heats and prepare their minds for the battle ahead.
As midday approached the trade winds kicked into action, and built in strength throughout the afternoon. The world’s finest freestylers were tempted onto the water at 2:30pm providing them just enough time to limber up for the start of competition at 3pm.
With winds blowing between 15-20knots, sails around 5.3m were the weapon of choice, for the final heats of the single elimination.
Picking up the action at heat 23, the sailors were shuffled into their respective finals. Davy Scheffers (Tabou / Gaastra) buckled under the pressure of the Belgian superstar Steven Van Broeckhoven (F2 / Gaastra). Simultaneously Jose Estredo (Fanatic / North) defeated Anthony Ruenes (Tabou / Simmer) with his powerful ponchs and super high shakas.
The losers final saw Scheffers up his performance from the previous heat, landing a super clean culo spock and a perfect burner. However Ruenes was determined to continue his path of destruction through the single elimination, and went for every move in his box of tricks, pulling off his trademark no handed funnel and a huge no handed flaka into flaka. Ruenes took the win seeing him earn third place on the overall event standings.
The final saw Estredo and Van Broeckhoven enter the water to battle it out for first place. Estredo was on fine form throughout the heat, taking advantage of the stronger winds and the small waves. He opened with a future and quickly flew through a succession of extreme moves including a fully planning push loop and an air chachoo. Van Broeckhoven crashed his initial move and spent the remainder of the heat playing catch up. Despite the Steven’s best efforts Estredo was back in his element capitalizing on the ramps and big air maneuvers. After a tense wait while the judges calculated the score sheets, Estredo was awarded first place in front of a large crowd on the beach.
Once the victor was crowned, competition continued directly into the double elimination, allowing ten of the eighteen heats to be completed. With the opportunity to improve their overall score, the sailors hit the water with full force ready to take on their opponents.
Ian Mouro Lemos (JP / NeilPryde) worked his way through two close heats, claiming victory over super technical Nicolas Akgazciyan (Starboard / Gun) and explosive Quincy Offringa (Starboard) with his textbook burners and smooth switch chachoos.
The two Brits Phil Richards (Fanatic / Severne) and Andy Chambers (JP / NeilPryde) both delivered exceptional heats against the style master Tonky Frans (Tabou / Gaastra). However Tonky was living up to his reputation, landing clean culos and even a bonka to seal the deal, seeing him advance past both challengers.
Israel’s Yarden Meir (Fanatic / Simmer) looked to be on a mission, successfully beating Bryan Metcalf-Perez (JP / NeilPryde / Dakine) and Yegor Popretinskiy (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) and advanced into the top eight.
With the wind switching offshore, head judge Duncan Coombs called an end to the day’s competition and released the sailors at 6:30pm.The action will continue through the final heats of the double elimination tomorrow, kicking off at 11am with the skippers meeting and the first possible start to competition at 11:30. Day 4: The astounding island of Lanzarote delivers remarkable conditions for the final day of competition allowing Estredo to stamp down his authority on the shores of Costa Teguise.
As the sailors awoke for the fourth day of competition, a storm cloud lingered over the event site reflecting the atmosphere between the remaining twelve sailors, as they entered the final heats of the double elimination.
With howling winds forecast the competition was postponed until midday, allowing the crowds on the beach to gather and the tension to rise. When one o’clock struck, the wind was blowing over 20 knots and sea state was choppy with the occasional wave rolling in, ensuring the spectators were treated to an exciting show as the sailors were able to launch into their largest aerial maneuvers.
Heat 44 was first to hit the water, seeing Bonaire’s Bjorn Saragoza (Starboard / Hot Sails) and Belgian Dieter Van Der Eyken (Starboard / Severne) work their way past Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic) and Ian Mouro Lemos (JP / NeilPryde). Mouro Lemos looked to be struggling with the conditions as he failed to complete all the required moves, whilst Van Der Eyken took his first heat by storm sailing a carefully planned out attack on Taty.
Next up, Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra) started his rampage through the ranks, squeezing past Tonky Frans (Tabou / Gaastra) in a really close heat that resulted in a two to one decision from the judges in favor of Thode. Meanwhile Yarden Meir (Fanatic / Simmer) hit the water ready to shake up the results and continue with his previous day’s performance. Meir’s opponent Phil Soltysiak (Starboard / Dakine) played his consistent card throughout the heat, whilst Meir chose a higher risk strategy, attempting air chachoos and big forward loops to catch the judge’s eye. Meir was rewarded with his efforts and granted access into the next round.
Heat 46 was run in two separate parts allowing the judges to form a panel of five to watch the action unfold. Saragoza continued his winning streak, steaming past Van Der Eyken with his enormous shakas and clean konos. Meir then went on to face the mighty Thode. With little to lose Meir attempted his reckless routine of high power maneuvers; however he looked to buckle under the pressure of Thode and went onto crash many of his critical tricks.
Thode’s charge through the double elimination continued as he stormed past Davy Scheffer’s (Tabou / Gaastra) and Anthony Ruenes (Tabou / Simmer) in two incredible heats, seeing all the sailors bring their most impressive moves to the table. Thode managed to sail his way to victory with his gravity defying kabikutchis and spock culos.
With only one more heat between him and the final, Thode went on to face his arch nemesis Steven Van Broeckhoven (F2 / Gaastra). The two sailors matched each other move for move, in what turned out to be astoundingly close heat. Van Broeckhoven’s Bonka and mind blowing no handed burner separated the pair seeing him snatch the win by just half a point on the judges score sheets.
