35. Fuerteventura World Cup 2023

  • Das war der gestrige Tag 8:

Brilliant Bosson defeats Ruenes in all French final to lead the Men's Freestyle with two days to go

With the overnight forecast improving for Day 8 of the 2023 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam, Sotavento once again delivered the goods as it continues to live up to its name of ‘Home of the Wind’, which saw the Men’s Single Elimination completed and the top four put on a superb display of the latest power moves as they took full advantage of the favourable water state. Ultimately, there was no stopping reigning world champion - Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) - from claiming the top place on the podium as the Frenchman delivered a clinical display of world class Freestyle.

Reigning world champion - Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) - advanced into the winners’ final after edging an incredibly close semifinal against Yentel Caers (JP / NeilPryde). The Frenchman trailed Caers for much of the heat, but with the top 4 being given 9 minutes to show their best moves, Bosson made full use of his time as he struck in the dying stages to flip the tie on its head - eventually claiming the win with 46.5 points to 44.9. In the final, the 32-year-old was in clinical form again as his combination of power moves proved too much for Antony Ruenes (Tabou / GA Sails). Bosson posted his highest scoring heat of the contest 47.8 points to deservedly win the single elimination, which sees him lead the event heading into the last two days.

Like Bosson, Ruenes (Tabou / GA Sails) would post his highest scoring heat of the contest in the final - 41 points - after landing a trademark no-handed burner and a no-handed ponch, but it wasn’t enough to take down his friend and fellow countryman. Earlier, Ruenes had claimed an excellent victory over Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Severne Sails), which guarantees the 34-year-old his first podium since Sylt 2014, as the worst position he can now finish is third. Ruenes also finished third here in the single elimination in 2015, but then injured his foot, which saw him drop to sixth as two double eliminations were completed that year!

    Antony Ruenes

Yentel Caers (JP / NeilPryde) secured the final place on the podium in the single elimination after earning the highest heat score of the competition - 51.1 points - which left the Belgian slightly frustrated as he missed out on a place in the winners’ final by such a small margin. In the semifinal against Bosson, Caers was missing a shifty, but against Vrieswijk in Heat 16 the 2019 world champion produced an impeccable heat, which saw him land not only a shifty but also a shifty-shaka. Caers looked incredibly dangerous and will be hoping for his shot in the double!

    FV23_fs_Yentel_Caers_0002.jpg

    Yentel Caers

Vrieswijk was left slightly frustrated that the semifinals were run when the wind was still building as he was left underpowered sometimes on 4.8m. The Bonairean lost out to Ruenes by just over 4 points, but critically he failed to complete his starboard tack scoresheet with only 3 out of 4 moves landed. The 27-year-old sailed a solid heat in the battle for third and fourth - posting a score of 46.2 points - but just came up short against an on fire Caers.

    FV23_fs_Amado_0029.jpg

Amado Vrieswijk & Yentel Caers synchro freestyle

The margins at the top of the Freestyle are so fine that you wouldn’t bet against either Ruenes, Caers or Vrieswijk coming back through the double to challenge Bosson for the top honours, whilst a sailor from further back in the double, which began this afternoon, could just as easily mount a challenge.

Several sailors began their comebacks, but the most impressive competitor thus far in the double was Lennart Neubauer (Starboard / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins), who put the disappointment of a first round exit in the single firmly out of his mind. The former youth world champion posted the highest scoring heat of the entire contest (when 3 moves from 7 on each tack count) - 41.3 points - to dispatch of Dudu Levi (Future Fly / GUNSAILS), who was slightly unlucky with his draw as his total of 30.1 points would’ve been enough to progress through most other heats. Neubauer then proceeded to knock out Bodhi Kempen (Severne / Severne Sails) with another astute display and there won’t be many sailors wanting to take on the 19-year-old, who currently leads the European Tour.

    FV23_fs_Lennart_on_fire_0088.jpg

    Lennart Neubauer

Elsewhere, Jacopo Testa (AV Boards / Point-7 / AL360) also made a successful start to his comeback as he dispatched of fellow Italian - Nicolo Di Marco - before he progressed against a below par Dieter Van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails), who only landed one move on port tack, which is almost unheard of as he is normally so solid and reliable. Testa looked a little shaky in the first round, but started to find his form in the second round and if the Italian can start to gather a bit of momentum he could be a real danger man.

    FV23_fs_tweaked_0151.jpg

Meanwhile, Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project Fins) will face Steven Van Broeckhoven (Starboard / GUNSAILS) in round three after Sugi ended the hopes of Michael Chovan, whilst Van Broeckhoven saw off Marino Gil (Goya Windsurfing). The Pozo local sailed well on port tack with his jumping repertoire, but the Belgian had too much firepower in store!

    FV23_fs_Takuma_Sugi_0160.jpg

In Heat 23a - George Grisley (AV Boards) - negotiated his way past good friend Maarten Molenaar and is rewarded with a tricky tie against Neubauer, whilst Nicolas Akgazciyan (JP / NeilPryde) will take on Testa after defeating Corto Dumond (RRD / RRD Sails) in Heat 23b.

Youp Schmit had to be on his toes to stop 16-year-old - Takumi Moriya (Severne / Severne Sails) - who sailed excellently to push the Bonairean all the way with just 2.3 points separating them by the end of the heat. Moriya looks like one to watch carefully in the coming years. Schmit will now face Nils Bacon (Patrik / Patrik Sails) after winning the last heat of the day against Robin van Linden (Severne / Severne Sails).

With a firing forecast for the last two days of the Freestyle there should be more explosive action to come, so make sure you tune into www.pwaworldtour.com on Friday and Saturday to see if Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) and Adrien Bosson can successfully defend their single elimination crowns. The sailors will meet again at 11am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 11:30am (GMT+1) onwards.

  • Das war der heutige Tag 9:

Sarah-Quita Offringa claims 14th Freestyle world title, whilst Yentel Caers storms back to win first event on World Tour

Day 9 of the 2023 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam saw the conclusion of the men’s and women’s Freestyle, which saw Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) claim a record extending 14th Freestyle world title, whilst Yentel Caers (JP / NeilPryde) completed a superb comeback to claim his first event title on the World Tour.

    Women’s

Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) admitted to being nervous on the final day of the Freestyle contest, especially with Maaike Huvermann (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) picking up her level of performance, but the Lady from Aruba has an uncanny knack of embracing those nerves to increase her own level and that’s exactly what she did again as she successfully defended her single elimination title to clinch her 14th Freestyle world title and 21st overall. Offringa was pushed all the way in the final by Huvermann, but in the latter stages of the heat just managed to assert as she landed a powerful air funnel and a pasko to wrap up the event!

    FV23_fs_Sarah_Quita_0468.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

Huvermann had looked a little out of sorts in the single elimination, but the 25-year-old rediscovered somewhere near her best form in the double to gain one place to second after winning an incredibly close heat against - Oda Brødholt (Starboard / Severne Sails) - where just 0.3 of a point separated them . Huvermann posted the highest scoring heat of the contest - 28.1 points - in Heat 33 to bring Lisa Kloster’s (MB-Boards / Sailloft Hamburg) comeback to an end with a combination of culos, skopus and shuvit spocks impressing the judges. Huvermann finishes the season as the vice-world champion once again.

    FV23_fs_Maike_Huuvermann_0453.jpg

    Maaike Huvermann shuvit spock

Brødholt was gutted to have missed out on the vice-world title by such a slim margin, but the Norwegian sailed solidly throughout and should still be proud of her performance - especially with such small margins being the difference. Brødholt, Offringa and Huvermann continue to dominate the Women’s Freestyle scene as they complete the podium again!

Lisa Kloster fought back to claim fourth for 2023, which improves her overall performance by once place compared to 2021 when she finished 5th, whilst Lina Erpenstein (Severne / Severne Sails) finishes 5th after making her debut on the Freestyle World Tour.

    Men’s

Yentel Caers (JP / NeilPryde) was disappointed to miss out on a place in the winners’ final of the single elimination and the Belgian was able to use that disappointment perfectly as he went on a tear in the double elimination to secure his first event victory on the World Tour. The 2019 world champion posted the highest scoring heat of the single elimination - 51.1 points - in the battle for third and fourth, whilst he also set the highest scoring heat of the double with a monstrous - 47.2 points - in Heat 33 against Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Severne Sails), so he is arguably the deserved winner - especially after defeating reigning world champion - Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) - twice to claim the top place on the podium!

    FV23_fs_Yentel_celebrates_0493.jpg

    Yentel Caers epic celebration

Bosson may be slightly disappointed to relinquish the top spot on the podium here, but it still represents an excellent start to the season and keeps him firmly in the world title race heading into Sylt! The finals were run in gusty conditions and the Frenchman couldn’t quite display the same combination of power moves that he did in the single!

    FV23_fs_Adrien_Bosson_0411.jpg

Antony Ruenes slips one place in the double to third, but the Frenchman will still be delighted as he walks away with his first podium finish since 2014!

    Antony Ruenes

Amado Vrieswijk brought Jacopo Testa’s (AV Boards / Point-7 / AL360) brilliant comeback to an end in Heat 32 to defend his fourth place from the single elimination, which means the Bonairean finishes both in the Slalom & Freestyle to show he is currently the best all round sailor in the world.

    FV23_ls_Amado_0444.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

Testa, meanwhile, produced the come back of the double elimination as the Italian came from last place in the single to eventually finish 5th overall after taking down; Nicolo Di Marco, Dieter Van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails), Nicolas Akgazciyan (JP / NeilPryde), Balz Muller (Severne / Severne Sails), Youp Schmit (Tabou / GA Sails) and Lennart Neubauer (Starboard / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) as the vice-world champion discovered his best form to complete a brilliant recovery. Testa also landed the best move of the day with a sick chachoo into spock!

    FV23_fs_Jacapo_Testa_0424.jpg

    Jacopo Testa

Like Testa, Neubauer completed a fantastic comeback through the double which saw him win 5 heats on the bounce to finish 6th here after also coming from the first round. The young Greek was only stopped by an on fire Testa.

    FV23_ls_Lennart_Neubauer_0431.jpg

    Lennart Neubauer

Steven Van Broeckhoven (Starboard / GUNSAILS) pushed Neubauer all the way in Heat 30a, but was crucially missing a move on port tack. The Belgian thought he had landed a barracuda just before the buzzer, but that was adjudged to be out of time, which cost him in a place in the top 6. Youp Schmit (Tabou / GA Sails) shares joint 7th with Van Broeckhoven.

    FV23_ls_Steven_van_B_0475.jpg

    Steven Van Broeckhoven

The top ten is completed by Sam Esteve (JP / NeilPryde), Antoine Albert (Goya Windsurfing), Balz Muller and Niclas Nebelung (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins), who all share joint 9th.

With the men’s and women’s double eliminations being concluded today, tomorrow, which is the last day of the 2023 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam, will see an Expression Session held - the skippers’ meeting for which will be held at 1pm (GMT+1).

  • Sarah-Quita Offringa claims 14th Freestyle world title, whilst Yentel Caers storms back to win first event on World Tour

With the men’s and women’s double eliminations being completed yesterday, which saw Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) crowned Freestyle world champion for the 14th time and Yentel Caers (JP / NeilPryde) claim his first event victory, the final day of the 2023 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam was a relatively relaxed affair.

With the contest wrapped up, today saw a Freestyle expression session held in the early afternoon where the competitors were given 20 minutes to show off their best trick. Sarah-Quita Offringa once again proved too strong in the women’s division as the now 21-time world champion landed a sick no-handed culo to see off Maaike Huvermann (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) and Olya Raskina (JP / NeilPryde), whilst Balz Muller (Severne / Severne Sails) brought foil freestyle to the forefront as the Swiss claimed victory in the men’s for a no-handed burner - ahead of Yentel Caers and Lennart Neubauer (Starboard / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins).
