The LUDERITZ SPEED CHALLENGE 2011 is the beginning of a great future for the windsurfing community.Sébastien Cattelan and Sophie Routaboul planned to build a new playground for windsurfers since last year; and the new canal is proving to be the absolute weapon for them.
The “Lüderitz Speed Challenge” changed kites speed forever in 2007 but raising the bar to new heights, now it’s time for windsurfer.
What is hoped for is to put 3 crafts which have battled for years, namely kitesurfers, windsurfers and hydrofoil boats, on the same start line with the right conditions for a close contest, and all a real chance of attaining excellent results.
There is no point competing in a void as it devalues the achievement, so the challenge aims to help the other disciplines raise their speeds to make it a true contest.Sébastien knows that he can reach 60 knots in kitesurfing, it’s the next aim, but for him windsurfing still needs to express itself. He wants to push the limits for them before reaching his own goal.
Positive energy is needed to manage this adventure, and an interesting challenge lies ahead for us to discover which process is the best; there's bound to be confronting opinions and ideas of sailors, but the key is to first create the run which is the basis for all else.
No place in the World could be the witness to such performances as seen in Luderitz. Sébastien and Sophie have worked hard for 4 years to be able to reach the 55 knots. The same work is needed for windsurfers, but their experience and contributions are needed to make this possible.
So far, the new canal has proved easier in windsurfing than for kitesurfing, but some options still remain and the strong wind is coming again …
Despite of the fact that the organizers were preparing this new edition like a test according to the channel they have dug few days before the start, after some good wind conditions, the result is speaking: windsurf has never reached that speed before, Anders Bringdal, the legend, who took the opportunity and joined the test at the last minute as the windsurfing consultant, did a 50.7 knots Vmax during the 1st day of race! People from all over the World are watching. Trainings and improvements will be made after analysis, the record is closed.
Kite surfing records and performances will follow, step by step, this Team imagines and realizes what will be a huge “international records factory” as it has already been profiled since 5 years.
Sponsors who have chosen to be part of that edition, will participate to an historical period for the Sailing World

The deeper the canal the more chop for sure, but it's a combination of factors.
The walls are more vertical instead of sloped, the angle of the run overall is slightly broader and dead straight.
Another big factor is Seb tried to deflect the wind over the canal and built a ramp on the windward side, but this had the opposite effect and causes more downward force on the water due to a mini low pressure on the lee side of this ramp. He is hiring the digger again on Friday and will remove the ramp and improve the entry. There are other ideas I've given him, but I don't think he'll do it this year -

""I arrived two days ago just to Lüderitz because I really wanted to watch this channel and also to test my new prototypes designed by Diesel Spigaw. During the first day, conditions were not really easy with a channel that does not leave much room for error as it is very narrow. There was also a lot of disruption due to the configuration and construction of the channel the wind. In 30 to 35 knots on average, that n has not always been easy to have good burst but I made some good runs and it proves that we can go even faster on the water.
At the end of the day, and equipped in 5.3 m, I realize 47.30 knots average over 500 meters but mostly, I make a Vmax of 50.71 knots in two seconds. There is no doubt for me for a windsurfer to go beyond 50 knots over 500 meters, we just need the same wind can be a little cleaner on the entire body of water.
On Tuesday, the wind is announced a little less strong in the morning but is expected to strengthen during the day, we are perhaps not at the end of our surprises! "

There were no great speeds recorded from the kiters today, but Anders Bringdal made the most of it on a windsurfer and recorded a very respectable 47 knot 500m (new Swedish record - still to be ratified) and 50 knot peak, which is extremely rare in windsurfing.
