Stand Up World Tour 2011
Sunset Beach, Oahu
The crowd gathered yesterday on Oahu’s North Shore to watch the finals of the 2011 Stand Up World Tour’s first event.
After days of trials in 20ft+ waves and strong riding from over 100 competitors from around the world, the final heat came down to Naish’s Kai Lenny (Maui), Peyo Lizarazu (France), Robin Johnston (Oahu) and Zane Schweitzer (Maui). On his first wave, Kai scored an impressive 8.25, putting him in an early lead over Robin Johnston’s close second.
The 18 year old World Champion’s dynamic and aggressive style held him in the lead while Robin battled — coming down to a nail-biting last minute. With a 7.25 score needed to take first and 45 seconds left on the clock, Robin caught an incredible wave. While we held our breath, the judges scored, and pronounced Robin’s ride a 7.15...making Kai Lenny the winner by 0.10 points! In the closest victory of the World Tour, Kai Lenny wins his second Sunset Beach Pro.
Congratulations Kai! Great start to the year.
Next event on the tour: Brittany, France in May 2011.
