Racing returns to El Médano for first time in almost 30 years, while Men’s and Women’s wave fleets prepare for their second Canarian appearance of the season

After a short hop, skip and a jump from Fuerteventura, we are back, this time coming to you live from El Médano, Tenerife, between 1st-10th August as the Men’s Slalom X fleet prepare for their second and final battle of the season, while the Men’s and Women’s world title race continues to gather pace. Tenerife has been a regular stop on the Wave World Tour since 2011, but this year’s edition has an added twist with racing returning to El Médano for the first time since 1996.

    Event HQ from above

El Médano is situated on the southeast coast of Tenerife, just a few minutes away from the airport, which makes it an ideal spot to head to on a forecast from Europe. Furthermore, its beautiful sandy beaches are blessed with glorious sunshine, regular trade winds and pumping waves year round, which makes Tenerife a windsurfers’ haven - and not just for wave heads either as there are different spots, offering a variety of conditions in close proximity to each other.

    Wave

    Women’s

Last year Tenerife witnessed some of the highest performance wave riding we’ve seen on the World Tour with the world’s best female wave sailors continuing to push each other to the next level, which should make this year’s event as equally as intriguing.

Lina Erpenstein (Severne / Severne Sails) is the defending event champion having claimed a brilliant victory here in 2024, but the German’s preparations for Tenerife have been massively hampered after suffering a Lisfranc torsion while competing in Chile earlier this year, which also forced her to miss Gran Canaria. Erpenstein is back in the lineup for Tenerife, but this may still come a little too soon to see her charging for the top.

    TF24_wv_G3_0473.jpg

    Lina Erpenstein

Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) comes into Tenerife off the back of just securing another two world titles - taking her total haul to 27 and counting - and the Aruban is currently leading the Women’s Wave rankings - though she is even on points with Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing). Last year Offringa suffered a rare non-podium finish here as she just missed out in fourth place, so she’ll be keen to rewrite the slate on that one as she looks to keep control of the world title race heading into the back half of the year.

    6e6c5c0b50.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

With the emphasis usually more on wave riding than jumping in Tenerife, Kiefer Quintana will be a major threat again with her silky wave riding skills. The 20-year-old was hampered by a shoulder injury in Gran Canaria, which impeded her jumping slightly, so she should thrive in Tenerife’s predominantly riding conditions as she looks to keep her podium streak going - currently six on the spin.

    Alexia Kiefer Quintana

There’s a solid lineup preparing to compete in Tenerife with 25 women currently registered for the event, so there are too many names to mention, but also watch out for local girl Maria Morales (Goya Windsurfing), Belgium’s Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Windsurfing), who landed aerials and a taka in Gran Canaria, Poland’s Justyna Sniady (Flikka / North Sails), Switzerland’s Pauline Katz (Severne / Severne Sails) and the United Kingdom’s Cori McFarlane (Simmer / Simmer Sails), who impressed with her wave riding in Pozo.

    Men’s

Marc Paré (Simmer / Simmer Sails / MFC) enters the third 5-star stop on the Wave Tour ranked third overall after finishing second in Chile and fourth in Pozo. The Spaniard made a winning return from injury here last year, but will face a much sterner test this time round if he is to defend his event title as last year Tenerife was only a 4-star event, so there were some big names missing. Having said that, Paré is now a genuine world title contender and he’ll be eager to secure the top spot on the podium to reduce the gap to current World Tour leader - Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) and Philip Köster (Severne / Severne Sails), who is just 625 points ahead of him in second.

    TF24_wv_E334_0517.jpg

    Marc ParéTF24_wv_E334_0517.jpg

Browne has been at his superlative best so far this season registering three victories and a second place from the four events he has entered and he deservedly leads the world rankings by 2,500 points. The Brazilian will once again be a firm favourite here, as will Köster, who won last time out in Pozo and has won several times in Tenerife, but neither of them have competed here since 2019, which may open things up a little - especially depending on what conditions prevail.

Marcilio Browne (left) with Philip Köster (right)

Julian Salmonn (Naish / Naish Sails) calls Tenerife home and the German will look to use his home waters to his advantage again over the next 10 days. Salmonn secured the final place on the podium here in 2024 and will be a major threat again with his local knowledge of El Cabezo and wave riding prowess. Meanwhile, like Salmonn, Dieter van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails) is another sailor who calls Tenerife home as well and will be another name to watch.

    c93d0ff0fd.jpg

    Dieter van der Eyken

Victor Fernandez (Duotone Windsurfing) is always a major threat here and boasts a great track record claiming three Tenerife victories in 2015, 2016 & 2018, while he hasn’t finished outside the top three here (when there has been an event) since 2012.

    d3e9a60373.jpg

    Victor Fernandez

Other names to look out for include; Marino Gil (JP / NeilPryde), who is currently ranked fourth in the world rankings and finished fourth here last year too. Liam Dunkerbeck (Duotone Windsurfing), who claimed fifth here in 2024, Ricardo Campello, Alessio Stillrich (Bruch / Bruch Boards) and Miguel Chapuis (Flikka / North Sails).

    d3f511b878.jpg

    Marino Gil

Tenerife features an extremely strong fleet and depending on what kind of conditions we get there are several other names that can throw their names into the top 10 and beyond conversation - particularly if the emphasis shifts to wave riding - some of which include; Morgan Noireaux (JP / NeilPryde / Black Project Fins), Camille Juban (AV Boards / S2Maui), Antoine Martin (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC), Moritz Mauch (Simmer / Simmer Sails), Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde), Adam Warchol (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC), Takumi Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project Fins), plus the French trio of Baptiste Cloarec (RRD / RRD Sails) Arthur Arutkin (Flikka / GUNSAILS / Black Project Fins) and Jules Denel (Tabou / GA Sails) to name a few.

    eb107e68e7.jpg

    Slalom X

    Men’s

After an incredibly close first few days of racing in Fuerteventura, reigning world champion, Pierre Mortefon (FMX Racing / NeilPryde), clicked into top gear to claim a dominant victory after winning four of the last five eliminations. Things will be a little bit different in Tenerife with the Frenchman racing on NeilPryde, so it’ll be interesting to see how he adapts to life on different sails, but given his pedigree he’ll still start as the favourite and should be full of confidence. Another victory here would guarantee Mortefon the Slalom X world title for the second year running.

    bea28406a7089fe07cec919e6cf95b88.jpeg

    Pierre Mortefon

Of course El Médano is a location that many of the world’s top racers are accustomed to with many of them participating in the TWS’ winter training here, so it’s unlikely anyone will really have a home advantage, so to speak. However, Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails / Z Fins), who finished second in Fuerte after only finishing outside the top four once in 12 eliminations, plus Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde), who finished third in Fuerte after leading in the early stages, have spent years training here, so they may have a trick or two up their sleeve. The same goes for Jordy Vonk (Duotone Windsurfing), but there are question marks about just how fit he will be after a nasty wipeout in Fuerte, which saw the Flying Dutchman knocked unconscious and having to retire from the competition before the final day with a shoulder injury.

    0a65f8a965faf3d6950a642ac15bc77c.jpeg

Jordy Vonk (left) and Matteo Iachino (right)

Elsewhere, the Bonairean duo of Taty Frans (Point-7 / Z Fins) and Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Point-7 / Z Fins), who finished fifth and seventh respectively in Fuerte, will be hoping for another strong showing here. Tenerife is likely to have much lighter winds than Fuerte, so with that in mind Vrieswijk only registered a 6.0m as his smallest sail in Fuerte, which means he has a 7.8m at his disposal here.

If Bruno Martini (I-99 / S2Maui / Z Fins) can get off to a quicker start in Tenerife compared to Fuerteventura, then the Italian is a genuine podium contender. Martini was up against it from the word go in Fuerte, but still managed to finish 6th overall with a superb fightback and he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.

Other names to watch out for include; Germany’s Nico Prien (JP / NeilPryde), fin aficionado Jimmy Thieme (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails), the Netherlands’ Ingmar Daldorf (Tabou / GA Sails), the French contingent of Cedric Bordes (Severne / Severne Sails), Alexandre Cousin (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails), Pierre Macquaert (JP / NeilPryde), Sacha Fortune (Duotone Windsurfing), who qualified for his first Winners’ Final in Fuerte and Lohan Jules (AV Boards / S2Maui), while Scotty Stallman (Tabou / GA Sails) will also be battling for a place in the top 16 and beyond.

    Looking Ahead

Unfortunately, the forecast for the beginning of the week looks prettypoor, but the good thing is that with such a long holding period there is still plenty of time for that to change and the forecast has already been switching around a bit already. However, based on the current forecast it does look like we’ll be looking at action in the latter part of the week and with so much competition to get through we may be looking a Single Eliminations at best in the Men’s and Women’s Wave and a couple of eliminations in the Slalom X, which means there will be absolutely no room for error. The Youths’ and Masters’ fleets are also in attendance in Tenerife.

The PWA World Tour Partners with Waterspeed as Official Technological Supplier

The opening day of the 2025 Playa Surf El Médano Tenerife Windsurf Grand Slam saw 92 competitors registering in the pro fleets between 09:30-11:30am. With very little wind present on the first day competitors then spent the afternoon preparing their equipment over the remainder of the day before the vibrant opening ceremony was held during the early evening.

    Photomedano_TF25_Misc_00462.jpg

    Opening ceremony

The Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) is proud to announce a new collaboration with Waterspeed, who joins the World Tour as the Official Technological Supplier.

The partnership launches with the Waterspeed Challenge during the PWA World Tour event in Tenerife, running from August 1–10 for PWA riders and open until August 24 for fans and amateur windsurfers.

    A New Dimension of Performance

The Waterspeed Challenge introduces an innovative way to capture and share real performance data. Riders will be measured on their best average speed over 100 meters, with daily leaderboards integrated into the PWA livestream. This allows fans not only to follow the action more closely, but also to join the challenge themselves by tracking their own speeds at the event venue through the Waterspeed app.

    Connecting Pros and Fans

The initiative is designed to strengthen the bond between professional athletes and the global windsurfing community. The fastest PWA rider of the event will award their signed lycra to the fan who comes closest to — or beats — their top speed, while the amateur winner will also receive a free 1-year PRO subscription.

    Integrated Communication and Visibility

    - The collaboration is fully embedded within the PWA’s coverage and communications strategy:

    - Mentions and live leaderboard updates during the official livestream, with expert commentary from Ben Proffitt, ambassador of Waterspeed.

    - Promotion through both PWA and Waterspeed’s social media, newsletters, and websites.

    - On-site branding with banners and beach flags, ensuring strong presence at the events.

    Looking Ahead

Following Tenerife, the Waterspeed Challenge will be activated at the Sylt event, with the possibility of extending to Japan later this season. The long-term vision is to expand this collaboration into 2026 and beyond, bringing new value to athletes, fans, and partners, while showcasing the power of technology to enhance performance insights and community engagement in windsurfing.

    About the PWA

The Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) is the governing body of the Windsurfing World Tour, bringing together the world’s best athletes to compete across disciplines in iconic locations worldwide.

    About Waterspeed

Waterspeed is a leading app for tracking performance in watersports, empowering athletes and enthusiasts with precise data, analysis, and community engagement.

Saturday is a lay day in Tenerife with low winds continuing to dominate for the time being. The good news is that from tomorrow it looks as though we are least switching back to the normal air flow at this time of the year, so things are moving in the right direction.

    Der gestrige Tag 2:

The forecast changes for the better meaning there’s now a solid chance of racing on Sunday

Sunday is supposedly the day of rest, but thanks to a favourable forecast change, that hopefully won’t be the case now with the promise of moderate to strong winds in the afternoon with the breeze returning to the normal northeasterly trade direction, which should hopefully bring us some competition on Day 3 of the 2025 Playa Sur El Médano Tenerife Windsurf Grand Slam.

Dieter van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails), who calls Tenerife home, on the forecast: “I think from tomorrow [Sunday] there’s definitely a good chance. I think for Slalom X, it will be fine tomorrow and for sure Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and I think for waves that they can start doing stuff from Thursday and then it looks good over the weekend.

It actually looks quite strong for next weekend, not super wavy, but I think even on Friday/Saturday I might have to get a 4.0 or even smaller ready because there’s Calima, so the temperature goes up a lot, which can really accelerate the wind here. On the whole, I think it looks good.”

    TF24_wv_B35_1364.jpg

Dieter van der Eyken when competing last year here

With the forecast improving the Slalom X fleet will have their skippers' meeting at 12pm on Sunday with a first possible start at 13:00. Meanwhile, the Wave fleets will be given an announcement at 13:00.

    Das war der Tag 3:

Pierre Mortefon draws first blood in Tenerife after the wind fills in late

After a couple of days of waiting for the wind, Day 3 of the Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam eventually provided the goods to end the wait for some official competition as the Slalom X got underway during the early evening in 15-18 knots of wind. With the wind on the low-end of the spectrum the racers were reaching for their biggest registered equipment to provide a very different test from Fuerteventura. With the wind only filling in late there was only time to complete one elimination, but the usual suspects featured heavily.

    dc6a54997296758af31f28954c9c693c.png

    Elimination 1 Winners' Final

    Slalom X

    Men’s

Pierre Mortefon (FMX Racing / NeilPryde) made a seamless transition to his new sails as the Frenchman clinched the opening bullet of the event. Mortefon, who leads the world title race having won in Fuerteventura last month, produced a superb second gybe as he utilised the swell to gybe inside Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails / Z Fins) and take the lead, and once there, never looked like relinquishing it.

    TF25_sl_FRA14_RAFASOULART_00084.jpg

Pierre Mortefon makes a winning start

Iachino starts the event with a solid second place, but he’ll know he slightly missed an opportunity to claim the opening bullet. The Italian produced a great first gybe as he went slightly wider and powered out of the turn to move from about fifth into the lead, but then just mistimed gybing onto the same piece of swell that Mortefon ultimately used, which caused him to lose a bit of momentum and lose valuable ground that he couldn’t make up.

After the opening race the top three is identical to Fuerteventura with Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde), who held the lead down the opening reach, completely the current top three and it looks like the three heavyweights could be in for another epic tussle here.

In fact, the current top ten consists of exactly the same names that completed the top ten in Fuerte, but for now at least in a slightly different order. After the first race here, Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Point-7 / Z Fins) occupies fourth followed by Ingmar Daldorf (Tabou / GA Sails) in fifth, Jordy Vonk (Duotone Windsurfing) sixth, Nico Prien (JP / NeilPryde) seventh, Taty Frans (Point-7 / Z Fins) eighth, Jimmy Thieme (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails) and Bruno Martini (I-99 / S2Maui / Z Fins) completing the current top ten.

The forecast for Monday looks marginally windier than today with 16-20 knots predicted during the afternoon, while the skies are expected to be clearer, which may hopefully mean we get a bit more from the local thermal effect. The skippers’ meeting for both the Wave and Slalom X fleets will be held at 12pm (GMT+1) with the action commencing from 13:00 onwards.

Three eliminations, three different winners, but one very familiar name at the top as Pierre Mortefon asserts to place one-hand on Slalom X world title defence

The fourth day of the 2025 Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam saw an exciting day of racing as El Médano’s combination of swell and chop resulted in a mixed bag of results for many of the top racers. With the Slalom X fleet still being on their biggest equipment, and with the wind still being relatively light for their setups, that meant that there wasn’t much room for error, so timing gybes with the swell was crucial in order to succeed. Today saw a further three eliminations completed, which resulted in three different winners; Jordy Vonk (Duotone Windsurfing), Pierre Mortefon (FMX Racing / NeilPryde) and Nico Prien (JP / NeilPryde), but it is Mortefon who now has a stranglehold over the event as he looks to defend his Slalom X world title.

Pierre Mortefon made an uncharacteristic mistake in the opening race of the day (Elimination 2) as the Frenchman dropped his last gybe in the Winners’ Final to drop from second to eighth as he dropped from first to third from the overnight rankings. However, the reigning world champion in both Slalom X and Foil Slalom, soon steadied the ship as he rattled off his second bullet in three races before signing off the day with a solid second place in Elimination 4 to open up 5.6 point advantage at the top of the rankings, which puts Mortefon in complete control of the world title race.

Pierre Mortefon takes control of the event

Like Mortefon, Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Point-7 / Z Fins) had to recover from a less than ideal start to the day - 12th in Elimination 2 - after wiping out on the start line in the semifinal after clipping his clew on Lohan Jules’ (AV Boards / S2Maui) mast, which caused him to go over the handlebars and miss out on the Winners’ Final. The Bonairean then bounced back brilliantly to record his best results of the event so far with a second and a third, which sees the 29-year-old deservedly jump from fourth to second in the current event rankings.

    TF25_sl_NB20_RAFASOULART_00390.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

Jordy Vonk had a bit of a mixed bag of results on the second day of racing, but still rises into the top three from sixth at the start of play. The flying Dutchman claimed his first bullet of the event in Elimination 2 before securing fourth place in Elimination 3, which saw him move to within just 1.3 points of the lead. However, Vonk then just missed out on a place in the Winners’ Final after getting parked after the penultimate gybe in Elimination 4, which ultimately saw him drop out of the top five qualifying positions.

    TF25_sl_NED69_RAFASOULART_00460.jpg

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails / Z Fins) started the event with a solid second place, but by his own high standards didn’t enjoy his best day on the water with two fifth places and a seventh from today’s three eliminations. The Italian only finished outside the top four once in 12 eliminations in Fuerte and while there is still plenty of time for more racing left here, he’d have to go on an incredible run to deny Mortefon the world title - the Italian was Mortefon’s closest challenger coming into the event, but already faces an 8.6 point deficit. However, Iachino is still firmly in contention for another event podium.

    TF25_sl_ITA140_RAFASOULART_00465.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

After starting the day with another third place, and with how results worked out elsewhere, Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde) temporarily moved into the event lead. However, on this occasion it was short lived with the Pole going down on the entry to the opening gybe in the Winners’ Final of Elimination 3, which cost him dearly as he recorded a 10th place before completing the day with a sixth. Like Iachino, the Pole loses a couple of places from the overnight rankings - third to fifth - equal on 12 points with Iachino.

    TF25_sl_POL23_RAFASOULART_00411.jpg

    Maciek Rutkowski

In a cruel twist of fate it looked like Nico Prien may be denied a maiden fin bullet on the World Tour as Elimination 2 was cancelled when he was leading due to the last buoy drifting. However, after recording a sixth place in the rerun, followed by the same result in Elimination 3, Prien struck the front of the pack again as he bore down on Mortefon on the second gybe to take the lead and this time no ill luck could prevent Prien, who has previously won a foil elimination (Gran Canaria 2023), from claiming his first fin bullet, which sees the German climb one place into sixth.

    TF25_sl_GER7_RAFASOULART_00501.jpg

Bruno Martini (I-99 / S2Maui / Z Fins) will be brutally disappointed with how the last elimination of the day played out as up until that point the Italian was enjoying a fine day after opening with a second and a third place. However, when leading the opening semifinal of Elimination 4, Martini went down in the first gybe, which cost him a place in the Winners’ Final for the first time at this event. Martini currently discards that result, but will rue missing the chance to discard a 10th from the opening elimination as with a similar result he would’ve been firmly in contention for the podium. Martini still has a shot at the podium, but realistically can’t afford any more hiccups.

    TF25_sl_ITA160_RAFASOULART_00394.jpg

    Bruno Martini (fore)

The top ten is currently completed by Taty Frans (Point-7 / Z Fins) - 8th - Ingmar Daldorf (Tabou / GA Sails) - 9th - while Lohan Jules climbs into the top ten - 13th to 10th - but things could’ve been even better for the 23-year-old had he not sailed to the wrong mark when leading the first semifinal of Elimination 4.

    TF25_sl_ITA160_RAFASOULART_00432.jpg

On paper the forecast for Tuesday looks marginally lighter than today - 17-19 knots during the afternoon compared to 18-21 knots - so there is a decent chance of more competition tomorrow. The Wave fleets will be given another call at 11am (GMT+1) with a first possible start at 11:30am, while the Slalom X fleet will have their skippers’ meeting at 12pm again with a first possible start at 13:00.

Ich find's gut. Mal ein Kontrast. Und solche Bedingungen werden sicher viele Nordsee Surfer nur zu gut kennen.

    Das war Tag 5:

Opening round of Men’s Single Elimination completed in tricky light winds and variable waves

After a couple of days of Slalom X, Day 5 of the 2025 Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam saw the Men’s Wave fleet enter the fray for the first time this week, which allowed the first round of the Single Elimination to be completed in relatively tricky conditions. However, the world’s best wave sailors were still able to produce a few moments of magic to leave only the top 32 men standing after being given 16 minutes to link together their best two waves and land their best jump.

Highlights from Day 5 in Tenerife

    Wave

    Men’s

Adam Warchol (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) set the highest heat score of the day in Heat 5 as he racked up 18.47 points after linking together the joint single highest wave score of the day - 7 points - and also landing the third highest jump of the day - 5.73 points for a backloop to comfortably progress. Meanwhile, Jochen Stolz (Bruch Boards / Simmer Sails) used his local knowledge to good effect to earn the third highest score of the day to deservedly advance.

    TF25_ls_POL1111_RAFASOULART_00628.jpg

    Adam Warchol

Elsewhere, Arthur Arutkin (Flikka / GUNSAILS / Black Project Fins) was involved in the opening heat of the day and the Frenchman booked his place in the next round with the second highest heat of the day - 16.64 points - with two solid wave scores inflicting much of the damage. Laurin Schmuth (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) secured the other qualifying position as he edged out Simon Thule (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails) and Finn Mellon (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing).

    TF25_wv_F7_RAFASOULART_00560.jpg

    Arthur Arutkin

Moritz Mauch (Simmer / Simmer Sails) was once again one of the standouts in the wave riding department with his vertical, dynamic approach going down well with the judges. The 29-year-old equalled Warchol’s 7 point ride to split the highest single wave of the day and won Heat 6 ahead of Henri Kolberg (Naish / Naish Sails / Maui Ultra Fins), who landed an almost planing backloop to deny Lucas Meldrum (Duotone Windsurfing) a place in the next round.

    TF25_wv_CNI24_RAFASOULART_00654.jpg

    Moritz Mauch

Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) managed to come out on top of a close heat in Heat 2 as the young German won the heat ahead of Tim van Dam Sanchidrian (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails), who also progressed after pipping Baptiste Cloarec (RRD / RRD Sails) to a place in the round of 32 by just 0.13 of a point. The Spaniard’s opening wave - 6.66 points - proved to be the difference despite Cloarec landing a no-handed backloop.

    TF25_wv_G6_RAFASOULART_00586.jpg

    Anton Richter one-handed backloop

In Heat 3, Mike Friedl (Goya Windsurfing), who earned his first top ten result in Gran Canaria last month, safely negotiated his way into the next round as he landed a 5.87 point backloop - the highest scoring jump of the day - to progress, while Hayata Ishii (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) secured the other qualifying position.

In the other three heats of the first round Alessio Stillrich (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails) went on to win Heat 4 ahead of young local boy Walter Costanzo (JP / NeilPryde) who also advances. 17-year-old Ryu Noguchi (Starboard / Severne Sails) and 20-year-old Esteban de Cruz (Goya Windsurfing) are two of the youngest sailors to advance into the top 32 after negotiating their way through Heat 7, while Jules Denel (Tabou / GA Sails) made no mistakes in Heat 8 to comfortably win the heat against reigning Master’s world champion Mike Friedl (Goya Windsurfing).

The forecast doesn’t look great on paper tomorrow with just 10-16 knots currently being predicted, however, some of the local still think it has the potential to be okay, so we will just have to wait and see. The Wave skippers’ meeting will be held at 10:00 (GMT+1) on Wednesday morning with a first possible start at 11am, while the Slalom X fleet will once again have their skippers’ meeting at 12pmwith a first possible start at 13:00.

Es wird wieder gefahren. Mit Waveriding hat das aber wenig zu tun...

Gewertet werden 2 Wellen, keine Sprünge.

Ich bin gespannt, wie Philip das gleich meistern soll.

    Der gestrige Tag 6:

Only top eight men and top sixteen women left standing after a long stop-start day eventually delivers

The forecast didn’t necessarily look amazing for Day 6 of the 2025 Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam, but a few locals remained hopeful yesterday evening and in the end their positivity was correct. However, the beginning of the day proved to be a relatively frustrating affair as variable winds led to numerous cancellations. On the plus side, today saw the best waves of the contest thus far as El Cabezo gave a glimpse of what it’s capable of delivering and now the conclusion of the Men’s and Women’s Single Eliminations is within sight with just the top eight men and top sixteen women remaining.

    Wave

    Women’s

In the opening women’s heat - Heat 9 - Line Wittrup Bang (Goya Windsurfing) and Blanca Alabau (WeOne / Severne Sails) dominated proceedings to deservedly book their places in the quarterfinals. Heat 9 needed numerous attempts to be completed and on each occasion it was the Dane and the Spaniard in the top two, so it’s only fair that they did eventually progress as they were clearly a cut above.

    TF25_wv_D82_RAFASOULART_00940.jpg

    Line Bang Wittrup

Maria Behrens (Duotone Windsurfing / Maui Ultra Fins) was the standout sailor in the women’s opening round as the 23-year-old earned two out of the top three wave scores to comfortably progress into the top 16. Behrens showed excellent wave selection and was then able to use those scoring opportunities to maximum effect as she racked up a 7.37 and a 6.63, while Milanka Linde (Severne / Severne Sails) grabbed the other qualifying spot from an all-German Heat 10.

    TF25_wv_G209_RAFASOULART_00955.jpg

    Maria Behrens

The other two Round of 32 heats proved to be relatively low scoring affairs in comparison as Sybille Bode (Goya Windsurfing) and Maria Schalin (JP / GUNSAILS) advanced from Heat 11, while 19-year-old Lisa Wermeister (Duotone Windsurfing / Maui Ultra Fins) won Heat 12 ahead of Cori McFarlane (Simmer / Simmer Sails), who actually finished tied on points with Lizzlotte Andrew Schilling (F2 / F2 Sails), but had the higher single wave score to also advance into the quarters.

    TF25_wv_F293_RAFASOULART_01006.jpg

    Lisa Wermeister

    Men’s

Philip Köster (Severne / Severne Sails) looked in fine form as the five-time world champion firstly set the highest score of the day thus far in the Round of 32 before going on to better his score in the Round of 16 as he set the highest score of the day - 19.75 points. The German was at his impeccable best in the air landing trademark double forwards, while he made wave riding look effortless as he danced from one move or turn straight into the next. After today’s performance, Köster has set the bar, and is who everyone else has to beat.

    TF25_wv_G44_RAFASOULART_01188.jpg

    Philip Köster

Also advancing from the opening quarterfinal is Victor Fernandez (Duotone Windsurfing), who looked perfectly at home again in El Cabezo. The Spaniard had to survive a late scare after fellow countryman - Alessio Stillrich (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails) - landed a one-handed, one-footed backloop, but it wasn’t quite enough as Fernandez progressed by just over quarter of a point.

    TF25_wv_E42_RAFASOULART_01038.jpg

    Victor Fernandez

Defending event champion, Marc Paré (Simmer / Simmer Sails / MFC), set the second highest scoring heat of the day in the second quarterfinal - Heat 18 - as the Spaniard landed a double forward and then delivered some aggressive vert wave riding to rack up 18.9 points and will now face a stacked semifinal featuring Köster, Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) and Miguel Chapuis (Flikka / North Sails) for a spot in the final.

    TF25_wv_E334_RAFASOULART_01075.jpg

    Marc Paré

Meanwhile, Antoine Martin (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) secured the second qualifying position into the semifinals after landing arguably the biggest backloop of the day in the dying minutes to deny Dieter van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails) a spot in the semifinal at his home event, who had looked in dangerous form all day and set the fourth highest heat tally of the entire contest in his second round performance.

Liam Dunkerbeck (Duotone Windsurfing) made a flying start to Heat 19 as the 21-year-old quickly landed an almost perfect double forward - 7.82 points - to give himself the remainder of the heat to concentrate on wave riding and the young Spaniard made no mistake with his early advantage to comfortably book his place in the semifinals. Behind Dunkerbeck though, there was an incredibly tight battle between Miguel Chapuis, Moritz Mauch (Simmer / Simmer Sails) and Ricardo Campello with just 1.31 points separating second to fourth by the end of the heat.

    TF25_wv_E11_RAFASOULART_01131.jpg

    Liam Dunkerbeck

Campello spent most of the heat unsuccessfully looking for a double forward ramp and felt he was impeded several times when ready to jump, but in hindsight he may now regret not concentrating on waves more as he was left counting just a 3.38 point backup score.

Meanwhile, in the case of Mauch, he’ll be slightly disappointed he couldn’t properly connect with a wave in the quarters. The 29-year-old earned the highest singe wave score for the second day running - 7 points - but couldn’t quite replicate it in Heat 19. However, you can’t take anything away from Chapuis, who was one of the standout wave riders of the day - consistently showing solid wave selection and timing to progress.

    Miguel Chapuis

In the last heat of the day - Heat 20 - Marino Gil (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) quickly landed the highest scoring jump of the contest thus far - 8 points - for a perfect double forward, which like Dunkerbeck gave him the opportunity to focus on waves for the remainder of the heat and the last quarterfinal also turned into an epic tussle for the second qualifying position. In the end, reigning world champion, Marcilio Browne, did enough to edge out Julian Salmonn (Naish / Naish Sails), who completed the podium here in 2024, after the Brazilian combined a super stylish bottom turn into a taka to advance.

    TF25_wv_E959_RAFASOULART_01235.jpg

    Marino Gil

Elsewhere, Jules Denel (Tabou / GA Sails) was a little bit unlucky to be drawn in Heat 16 with Browne, Campello and Jochen Stolz as the Frenchman would’ve advanced into the top 16 in all but one other second round heat. Denel outscored both Browne and Campello on the wave, but both of the latter landed double forwards, which ultimately proved to be the difference.

    TF25_wv_F41_RAFASOULART_01166.jpg

    Jules Denel

Heat 12 also saw a change in result after Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project Fins) was adjudged to have interfered with one of Alessio Stillrich’s waves - meaning that upon review, Sugi was deducted his highest single wave score, and with just 0.7 of a point separating the two sailors, that led to Stillrich advancing in place of a disgruntled Sugi.

Thursday should hopefully see both the Men’s and Women’s Single Eliminations completed as the forecast for tomorrow has improved with slightly bigger waves and similar winds as today expected. The wave fleets will meet again at 9:30am (GMT+1) for their skippers’ meeting with a first possible start at 10am. The Slalom X fleet will be given an announcement again at 12pm with a first possible start at 13:00.

    Das war Tag 7:

Marc Paré powers to victory in Men’s Single Elimination, while Sarah-Quita Offringa earns hard fought victory in Women’s as El Cabezo turns on

The waves on Day 7 of the 2025 Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam were never a problem as a new swell started to pulse through to bring the best waves of the event thus far. However, despite a windy forecast, the wind was quite shy at the beginning of the day and it wasn’t until 16:00 local time that the Single Eliminations resumed. The finals were eventually run with the best two waves and one jump to count as the wind picked up, while the world’s best were given 16 minutes to show their full potential in over head high set waves.

    Women’s

Last year Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) missed out on the podium here, but this year she is now guaranteed to finish at least second after claiming a hard fought victory in the Single Elimination to lead the event with three days to go. The Aruban produced the highest scoring heat of the single in the final - 14.93 points - to deservedly claim the top spot on the podium. Offringa demonstrated powerful rail-to-rail wave riding throughout to see off the rest of the competition.

    TF25_ls_ARU91_RAFASOULART_01301.jpg

    A very happy Sarah-Quita Offringa

Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) was Offringa’s biggest competition in the final with the 20-year-old leading Heat 23 for much of the opening half of the showpiece. The young Spaniard produced one of the turns of the day to open her account, but unfortunately couldn’t back it up, but still earned 5.25 points for one turn. Kiefer Quintana was still lacking a jump score late into the final and after two failed backloop attempts had to settle for a 2.75 point forward, which wasn’t enough to trouble Offringa, but if she had’ve managed to stick one of those backloops it may well have been a different story. Kiefer Quintana is also guaranteed to extend her podium streak - now seven and counting - as she keeps herself firmly in the world title race conversation.

    TF25_wv_E59_RAFASOULART_01342.jpg

Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails) only finished ninth here in 2024, but today she booked her place in the final and is now guaranteed a top four finish after completing the podium. The 15-year-old took an aggressive approach to her wave riding, but sometimes possibly just tried to push a little too hard as she looked to land an aerial, but even so she’ll be delighted to have majorly bettered her previous result here.

    TF25_wv_B5_RAFASOULART_01321.jpg

Sol Degrieck looks to go to the air

Today will live long in the memory of Line Bang Wittrup (Goya Windsurfing) after the Dane qualified for her first Winners’ Final on the World Tour. In the opening quarterfinal in particular the 22-year-old delivered some of the biggest hits of the day, while she narrowly edged out Justyna Sniady (Flikka / North Sails) and Maria Morales (Goya Windsurfing) in the semifinals to book her spot in the top four for the first time.

    TF25_wv_D82_RAFASOULART_01440.jpg

    Line Bang Wittrup

Pauline Katz (Severne / Severne Sails) earned the highest scoring wave of the day in Heat 11 - 7 points - for a sick, late frontside hit, before tagging the end section as she won the opening quarterfinal. Unfortunately, however, Katz couldn’t quite connect with a wave in quite the same manner in the semifinal and just missed out a place in the final by less than a point. The Swiss is currently tied in joint fifth place with Justyna Sniady, who also impressed in the quarters.

    Men’s

You could tell Marc Paré meant business today as even in the light winds before the competition started the Spaniard was out tweaking his gear to make sure he was leaving no stone unturned. That paid off handsomely with Paré setting the two highest scoring heats of the contest - 22.33 in the semis and 20.39 points in the final - to deservedly earn the top spot on the podium as he looks to defend his event title from 2024, while perhaps more importantly, reduce the deficit to World Tour leader Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC). In the final, Paré landed easily the biggest jump of the day to earn 8.27 points for a massive double forward, while a combination of full rail turns and frontside 360s was more than enough to earn him the current event lead.

    TF25_wv_E334_RAFASOULART_01468.jpg

    Marc Paré unleashes

Meanwhile, Victor Fernandez (Duotone Windsurfing) is guaranteed to keep his incredible record going here in Tenerife with the 41-year-old finishing on the podium here at every event since 2012, which is quite remarkable. The former three-time event champion used all of his local knowledge to maximise the potential of each wave, while you could tell how much he wanted to earn a top three finish after sailing away from a double forward in the final to secure second place - for now at least.

    TF25_wv_E42_RAFASOULART_01391.jpg

Victor Fernandez keeps his incredible run going

Marino Gil (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) dug deep in the semifinals to progress into the final today as he produced a buzzer beater to deny Antoine Martin (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) a spot in the top four by just 0.34 of a point. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old struck late again in the final to pip Browne to the last place on the podium after stomping an excellent double forward.

    TF25_wv_E959_RAFASOULART_01385.jpg

    Marino Gil makes the podium

Current World Tour leader, Browne, successfully negotiated his way into the final, but for once things didn’t really go his way. The Brazilian had several runs desperately hunting for proper ramp for a double forward, but on this occasion he couldn’t find a suitable ramp, so has to settle for fourth in the Single Elimination.

The forecast for Friday now looks significantly windier than before with winds of up to 30 knots currently predicted, while some locals think it could be windier than that still, so we’ll have to wait and see which discipline/category will get the nod. All fleets will have a skippers’ meeting at 09:30am (GMT+1) with the action commencing from 10am onwards for Waves and 10:30am for Slalom X.

Men’s & Women’s Double Eliminations begin, while Alexia Kiefer Quintana, Sol Degrieck, Javi Escribano & Vasily Zakharko win opening round of Youth’s

Day eight of the 2025 Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam proved to be the most intense day of the competition thus far as a variety of Youth’s, Pro Women’s and Men’s heats hit the water between 10:00 to 19:30 local time. El Cabezo turned on at various points throughout the day with sets up to logo high rolling through intermittently, which provided a great canvas for for the world’s best sailors to show exactly what they are capable of.

    Das war Tag 9:

Pierre Mortefon successfully defends Slalom X world title to be crowned world champion for a fourth time, while Matteo Iachino & Jordy Vonk complete overall podium

Part of the beauty of windsurfing is its unpredictability and the penultimate day of the 2025 Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam proved to be like that with the overnight forecast predicting one thing and delivering another. Ultimately, that meant that no official competition was completed, although a fun race was held, which saw a long distance race held starting from El Cabezo and finishing with a beach finish in front of Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano. With no official results gained, and the Slalom X holding period coming to an end, that means that Pierre Mortefon (FMX Racing) is officially your 2025 PWA world champion.

    Maciek in Instagram:

    "? PWA Tenerife: 5th ?

Of course this is not the result I wanted or I trained my ? off for. It basically came down to 3 first mark roundings in 3 finals with things out of my control happening pushing me from top2 down the order each time. I felt good, the gear was working great, mentally sharp, but the level is so close that when things don’t exactly come together you can’t count for more then a 5th. Actually same points with 4th but this time loosing a tie break - I won a few tie breaks in my life so can’t really complain ??‍♂️.

This has nothing to do with my result but I just can’t help to feel dissapointed about the competition management here in Tenerife. I was not gonna touch the subject but after one of the PWA judges confronted me to say it was disrespectful to windsurf the race course while we were on standby because of lack of wind I can’t really hold it. We raced 3,5 hours in 8 windy days. Did 16 heats total in 8 windy days. Skippers meeting most days was at 12. When it wasn’t windy/wavy enough for the wave competition the course was not ready to race - we simply sat at the beach waiting for better conditions for waves. And the last day was a cherry on the cake when instead of a high-stakes race with podium implications we did a „fun race” in probably the best conditions we raced in the whole week ?.

I’m not even sad for myself, I’m just in disbelief how we (the PWA - an athlete/industry association) can work like this and expect the sport to flourish. How we can give 50% effort and expect 100% result? We have such massive potential as a sport (shown many times, even just last month in Fuerteventura) but every single little cog in the machine needs to work well otherwise there’s no chance to stand out. I hope we can learn from this. Actually we have to learn from this. No other choice. Our sport deserves better.

Regardless, Tenerife is always fun, good people, good food, good conditions, fun wave sessions… Can’t wait to be back in the winter, but now it’s time to get back on the foil program now!"

Das war der letzte Tag 10:

Sarah-Quita Offringa wins for first time in Tenerife, while Marc Paré goes back-to-back to level up world title race battle

With no wind on the last day of the 2025 Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam that meant that the results from the Men’s and Women’s Wave Single Eliminations remain unchanged, which means Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) and Marc Paré (Simmer / Simmer Sails / MFC) are officially your 2025 event champions in Tenerife.
