  • For the First Time in 3 Years the World’s Best Wave Sailors Are Set to Compete in Pozo Izquierdo

It’s been a long time coming, but finally, after 3 long years the wait is almost over and the most radical windsurfers in the world are preparing to once again do battle in Pozo Izquierdo as the Gran Canaria PWA World Cup finally returns between the 9th-17th July. This edition will look slightly different to the previous ten years as the Moreno Twins, who did a stellar job when organising the Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival, hand over the reins to the legendary figure of Björn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne Sails).

    Gravity defying stunts in Pozo

The next 10 days promise to be unbelievable as wave sailing returns to the home of some of the biggest jumping in the business, whilst you can expect to see the off-the-lip antics go through the roof after a three year break. We are talking backloops and double forwards off-the-lip, air takas, goiters, you name it you’re likely to see it at some point over the next 10 days, so you aren’t going to want to take your eyes off of the action.

Pozo Izquierdo is internationally famed in the windsurfing world due to its unrelenting wind and steep waves. The combination of these two factors creates the perfect playground for the world’s most extreme sailors to defy gravity and perform the biggest stunts on the planet. The local effects mean that even the slightest breeze can soon be accelerated to nuclear strength, with the wind peaking at around 50-60 knots, which often results in the guys and girls reaching for their smallest equipment, which even then, sometimes isn’t small enough.

    Women’s

The Moreno Twins - Daida (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) and Iballa (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) - have dominated women’s windsurfing for the last two decades, but Daida’s level of domination in Pozo Izquierdo is next level with the multiple-time world champion having won the event here every year since 2000 - except 2012 - when Iballa won. Those incredible stats mean that Daida will start this year’s event as the favourite, but she will no doubt be made to work hard in order to earn another victory.

    GC19_wv_E64_0487.jpg

Daida Moreno stalling on a forward

First of all, as the only other woman since 2000 to have beaten Daida in Pozo, Iballa should be her usual threat.

    11a0f56ec6.jpg

    Iballa Moreno

Meanwhile, defending world champion - Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) - will be chomping at the bit to try and claim her place at the top of the podium come the end of the event, as will the likes of Justyna Sniady (North Sails), who claimed a fantastic second place here in 2019, whilst Lina Erpenstein (Severne / Severne Sails) returns to Pozo for the first time since 2018 and the 25-year-old is usually challenging for the podium positions, so you can expect her to be there or there abouts.

    37095aab9d.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

With 19 girls lining up for the start of this year’s Gran Canaria PWA World Cup it will also be interesting to see if any of the other girls can push their way into the top 5 and beyond - particularly the youthful talents of Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins), Maria Morales (Goya Windsurfing), and Julia Pasquale (Fanatic / Duotone), all of whom look bright talents and with an extra 3 years of training under their belts, since the last edition, they could well cause a surprise or two.

    b208538acf.jpg

    Alexia Kiefer Quintana

    Men’s

Ricardo Campello (Naish / Naish Sails) is the reigning event champion from 2019, but he will face an incredibly tough challenge to successfully defend that event crown with so many sailors all amped and ready to do whatever it takes to claim that coveted top spot on the podium.

    0574d72c602b33a12c2549703459c364.jpeg

    Ricardo Campello

Firstly, reigning world champion - Philip Köster (Severne / Severne Sails / Black Project Fins) - will be eager to get his hands back on the top spot here in Pozo. The 5-time world champion failed to complete his jump scoresheet during the 2019 edition, which cost him dearly, and you can expect him to be challenging for top honours again. Since 2009, the 28-year-old has won the event 7 times, whilst he has finished outside the top 2 just once in that time (5th in 2014) - in 2013 there was no result.

    Philip Köster

The other name that immediately jumps out is Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing). The 3 aforementioned sailors made up the podium positions in both 2018 and ’19 and the one thing they all had in common during those two editions were that they all consistently land stalled and regular double forwards, plus the all important pushloop forward, which looks like being an almost necessity to make the podium again this year.

    d85a8c77a9.jpg

    Marcilio Browne

However, since there has been 3 years since the last edition, there are a few other names who would like to throw their name into the hat. Firstly, local boy - Marino Gil (Goya Windsurfing) - who has posted plenty of videos of him stomping pushloop forwards, as has Marc Paré (Fanatic / Duotone), who looks to have survived a slight injury scare before the competition. Both sailors will be hungry for success to prove they can mix it at the top end of the business.

    3a742d877c.jpg

    Marino Gil

Other notable sailors who possess the pushloop forward in their arsenal include another local - Josep Pons (CS Custom Boards / Point-7 / Black Project Fins), Antoine Martin (Starboard / North Sails) and Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / SWOX), so if everything clicks into place they too could be ones to watch.

    216d365eb3.jpg

    Robby Swift

It remains to be seen whether Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / Duotone) has added the pushloop forward to his repertoire of moves, but if he has then you can expect to see the Spaniard challenging for the podium again. The 3-time world champion narrowly missed out in 2018 and ’19 - placing 4th on both occasions.

    GC19_wv_E42_0458.jpg

    Victor Fernandez

Although it seems as though the pushloop forward will be necessary to be able to fight for the event victory there are a plethora of sailors, who will be vying for their place in the top 10 and beyond such as 2014 world champion - Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails), who finished 3rd here in 2017, local boys Alessio Stillrich, Omar Sanchez (Tabou / GA Sails) and the returning Aleix Sanllehy (Goya Windsurfing), Leon Jamaer (JP / NeilPryde), Julian Salmonn (Bruch Boards / GUNSAILS), Dieter van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails), Jules Denel (JP / NeilPryde), whilst it will be interesting to see how the Japanese duo of Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project Fins) and Takara Ishii (RRD / RRD Sails) fair after both sailors made bright starts in Cabo Verde. This will obviously be a completely different test. Eyes will of course also be on Liam Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne Sails / Black Project), the son of the legendary Björn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne Sails), who is now the event organiser of the Gran Canaria PWA World Cup.

Registered, Rigged & Ready After a Quiet Start to Proceedings

The inaugural day of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup saw a total of 104 competitors registering for the first competition in Pozo Izquierdo in 3 years between 10-11am across the Men’s, Women’s, Youth and Junior fleets.

    GC22_ls_Pozo.jpg

    The class of '22

Unfortunately, the wind refused to play ball on the opening day, and although there were a few flutters which tempted a few sailors out onto the water, the conditions never remained consistent enough to compete with the wind direction constantly switching direction and strength.

    GC22_wv_Juniors_warm_up.jpg

    A little warmup session

The opening ceremony was held in the early evening to officially declare the event open and attention now turns to tomorrow. The forecast still predicts strong winds, but with temperatures expected to soar to a scorching 37 degrees that may prevent the normal thermal from kicking in, so the main hope for competing may come in the morning and evening when the temperature should be slightly cooler.

Outlook for the next couple of days

With the wind and waves failing to improve the Youths were released shortly after 6pm and they, together with the pro fleet, will meet again at 9am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 9:30am (GMT+1) onwards - if conditions are suitable.

  • Das war Tag 2:

Maria Morales & Peter Gobisch Make Strong Starts in the U17 Girl’s & U15 Boy’s as the Wind Returns to Pozo Izquierdo

After a slow start to proceedings yesterday, day two of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup provided a lot more action with the wind returning. There were spells when the wind was up and down, but ultimately the first results of the competition were gained in the U17 Girl’s and U15 Boy’s (results are still subject to change) as the next generation of windsurfers took centre stage in Pozo.

    Wave

    Girl’s

    U17

Maria Morales Novarro (Goya Windsurfing) made a strong start to the event in the Girl’s U17s by winning both of the finals sailed today with a confident display of sailing, which saw the 16-year-old land several solid forward loops, while she showed an aggressive approach to her wave riding. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails) produced a great display to secure second place ahead of Annagiulia Piccaglia after the first two finals.

    U20

In the Girls U20s only the top 3 girls are left standing. Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone) became the first girl to book her place in the final after she managed to defeat Lisa Wermeister (Fanatic / Duotone) in Heat 1. The 17-year-old impressed with an excellent backloop and made the most of the small waves on offer. Meanwhile, Isabel Trivino Delgado (Severne / Severne Sails)) advanced straight to the final after winning Heat 2 ahead of Julia Pasquale (Fanatic / Duotone) and Lucia Trivino Delgado (Severne / Severne Sails), who would go into the repechage round against Wermeister.

    GC22_wv_Alexia_Quintana.jpg

    Alexia Kiefer Quintana

Pasquale proved too strong in the repechage round as she secured the last place in the final, which will hopefully be completed tomorrow.

    Boy’s

    U15

Peter Gobisch (Fanatic / Duotone), Arthur Van den Brande (RRD / RRD Sails) and Javier Escribano Toribio (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing) all qualified for the U15 Boy’s Final - with the latter successfully coming through the repechage round. The final proved to be a tight affair with Gobisch eventually just coming out on top by way of a 2:1 decision. In the end, Gobisch just snatched the victory with the young German’s superior wave riding proving to be the difference. Van den Brande and Escribano Toribio both sailed well, but ultimately Van den Brande was left to rue only having one counting jump as the criteria specified that the two jumps must be different.

    U17

During the afternoon the Boy’s U17s also took to the water and they have now been whittled down to the top 4 sailors. Teammates, Carlos Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone) and Tobias Bjørnaa (Fanatic / Duotone), will meet in the first semifinal, whilst Grigoris Stathopoulos (Severne / Severne Sails) face Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde) for a place in the final.

    GC22_wv_Grigoris_Stathopoulos.jpg

    Grigoris Stathopoulos

With the waves dropping off as the afternoon progressed the decision was made to wait for better conditions to complete the U20 Girl’s Final and the U17 Boy’f Final and the sailors were released shortly before 6pm. They will meet again at 9:30am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 10am onwards. The forecast for Monday is similar to today, so there should hopefully be wind again, but the question remains on whether there will be enough waves to compete with the forecast currently predicting waves of 1.1m in the morning.

Women’s Fleet Whittled Down to Top 8 After Alexia Kiefer Quintana & Tobias Bjørnaa Take Early Leads in Girl’s U20s & Boy’s U17s

Day 3 of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup turned into an action packed day with the Men’s and Women’s fleets both hitting the water for the first time in the afternoon, whilst earlier in the day the Youths were also in action. The waves remained relatively small throughout, but every so often a little nugget would appear, whilst with winds ranging between 20-30 knots the best wave sailors in the world were still able to show an impressive level in the air.

    Wave

    Women’s

The opening 6 heats of the Women’s Single Elimination were completed by the close of play on day 3 and the majority of the top seeds survived unscathed. However, there was one major upset as 12-year-old - Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails) - claimed the scalp of Lina Erpenstein (Severne / Severne Sails) in Heat 11b with a performance beyond her young years. Degrieck deservedly earned the highest single wave score of the day - 6.38 points - for a radical approach which saw her fully blow the fins out of the wave, which would prove to be the deciding factor in determining the heat.

    GC22_ls_Sol_Degrieck.jpg

    Sol Degrieck heads out

On the a-side, defending event champion - Daida Moreno (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) - looked to be in decent form as she posted the second highest heat score of the day - 16.88 points. Daida looked clinical in the air and dynamic on the wave, so she looks set for another deep run.

    GC22_wv_Daida_forward_loop.jpg

    Daida Moreno

Defending world champion - Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) - didn’t have things all her own way in Heat 12b as Pauline Katz (Severne / Severne Sails) put up a stern fight. However, in the second half of the heat Offringa was able to raise her level to eventually post the highest scoring heat of the day - 19:38 points. The Aruban will now face Maria Morales Navarro (Goya Windsurfing) in the quarterfinals after Morales defeated Julia Pasquale (Fanatic / Duotone) in Heat 12a.

Iballa Moreno (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) is also safely through to the quarterfinals after comfortably seeing off the challenge of - Lucia Trivino Delgado (Severne / Severne Sails). Iballa will now take on Marine Hunter (KA Sail) for a place in the semifinals after the French girl took down Coraline Foveau (Starboard / Severne Sails).

    GC22_wv_Iballa_forward.jpg

    Iballa Moreno

Elsewhere, Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone), who earlier won the opening elimination of the Girl’s U20s, will line up against Justyna Sniady (North Sails) in what should be a tight quarterfinal with both women well acquainted with Pozo.

    GC22_wv_Justyna_action.jpg

    Men’s

In the opening Men’s heat of the event, Josep Pons (CS Custom Boards / Point-7 / Black Project) produced an accomplished display to defeat Simon Thule (Starboard / Sailloft Hamburg / Maui Ultra Fins). In the early stages of the contest, Pons currently holds the highest scoring jump with a 6 point double forward. On the b-panel Baptiste Cloarec (RRD / RRD Sails) overcame a potentially tricky heat against Eleazar Alonso Sanchez (Starfish) to book his place in the top 32.

    GC22_wv_Pons_double.jpg

    Josep Pons

Moritz Mauch was the standout sailor of the day with his wave riding, in particular, setting him apart. The 26-year-old was the only sailor to post a wave score into the excellent range as he earned an 8.5 point ride with his penultimate wave of the heat, whilst he also posted a solid 7.5 point wave as a backup score to record the highest heat total of the day - 24 points. On the other side of Heat 2 - Jose Romero (Challenger Sails) - earned a convincing victory against Adam Warchol (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing) to also advance.

    GC22_wv_Moritz_Mauch.jpg

In the only other Men’s heat of the day - Heat 3 - Takara Ishii (RRD / RRD Sails) won a tight duel against Victor Borlin (Loftsails), whilst Antoine Albert (Goya Windsurfing) recorded the second highest score of the day as the New Caledonian racked up 23 points against Henri Kolberg (Naish / Naish Sails) to set up a tie against Marc Paré (Fanatic / Duotone), whilst Ishii will take on Julian Salmonn (Bruch Boards / GUNSAILS).

    U20 Final

Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone) claimed a decisive victory in the opening U20 Girl’s final of the event as she produced a confident display to see off Isabel Trivino Delgado (Severne / Severne Sails) and Julia Pasquale (Fanatic / Duotone). The 17-year-old landed a 6.5 point backloop and a stylish forward loop to lay a solid foundation on which to build, and a 7 point wave ride all but secured the victory. Trivino Delgado I. claimed second ahead of Pasquale.

    Boy’s

    U17 Final

Tobias Bjørnaa (Fanatic / Duotone) took on Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde) in the U17 Boy’s Final and it developed into a bit of a jumping battle with wave riding conditions becoming increasingly difficult. The aerial fight saw Bjørnaa gain the upper hand as he landed a well executed 5.12 point forward loop, whilst he was also able to sail away from a backloop to earn him the victory.

    GC22_wv_Tobias_Bjornaa.jpg

In the b-final - Carlos Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone) - secured the final place on the podium, for now at least, after earning a narrow victory against Greece’s - Grigoris Stathopoulos (Severne / Severne Sails). There was almost nothing to separate the two youngsters in the air, but Kiefer Quintana was able to make slightly more out of the waves on offer to come out on top.

With the forecast for tomorrow probably being the best for the next few days, the skippers’ meeting has been called for slightly earlier on Tuesday morning, so the sailors will meet at 8:30am for the skippers’ meeting, giving a first possible start at 9am (GMT+1).

10 Years On Iballa Moreno Tastes Victory For Just Second Time in Pozo After Winning Single Elimination

Day 4 of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup saw the completion of the Women’s Single Elimination in small waves and winds ranging between 20-30+ knots. The Moreno Twins proved to be their usual reckoning force as Daida (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) and Iballa (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) booked their places in the final, but there was a slight shock in the Winners’ Final as Iballa defeated Daida in Pozo for only the second time in her career.

The Moreno Twins successfully navigated their way through the semifinals to set up an all too familiar all Moreno final - as has been the case so many times over the years. Upon hearing the results of the semifinals, Daida (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) and Iballa, were both delighted to hear the news before preparing for the Winners’ Final.

    GC22_ls_The_Moreno_twins_make_the_final.jpg

10 years on from first defeating Daida in Pozo, Iballa managed to achieve this feat again as she produced a superb display of sailing to earn a deserved victory in the Single Elimination. Fittingly, Iballa posted the highest scoring heat of the contest in the Final to earn the top place on the podium here for the first time since 2012 - although she will still need to try and defend that position in the Double Elimination to walk away from the event as the champion. For a time, it looked as though Iballa may miss out on a place in the final as Justyna Sniady (North Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) led their semifinal heading in the latter stages of the heat. However, Iballa pulled it out of the bag in the last minute by linking together a 5.5 point wave to turn the heat on its head. In the final, Iballa made a solid start by landing a textbook backloop before later adding a radical one-foot forward to her scoresheet, whilst her best wave work was completed with her last two waves to put the final out of reach of Daida.

Iballa Moreno after winning the Single Elimination of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup: “I can’t believe it. It’s been a while to be in this position here. The last time I competed here (2019) I finished 4th, so I was just happy to be back in the final with my sister [Daida] as that has also been a long time. The conditions were tricky, but I managed to sail pretty consistently and got lucky to find a couple of good different jumps and wave rides.

I know I was lucky to win. I know Daida is the queen of Pozo, so it’s really hard to beat her. I think it’s only the second time I have beaten Daida in all those years, so that shows how hard it is to beat her and that she’s the best here.”

Daida produced a big performance against - Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) - in the semifinals as she posted a score of 19.26 points to progress, but never quite hit those heights in the final. Daida attempted an air taka and frontside aerial during the final but wasn’t quite able to make them stick, which meant she was unable to deny Iballa on this occasion. However, you certainly wouldn’t bet against a comeback by Daida in the Double Elimination.

Sarah-Quita Offringa secured the final place on the podium after taking down Justyna Sniady in the battle for third and fourth. The Aruban stomped a 7 point tweaked pushloop to make a strong start to the heat and never looked back as the reigning world champion went on to claim a convincing victory. Offringa will now look to see if she can climb the ladder in the Double Elimination, as will Sniady, who finished second here in 2019.

    Red Bull Rockets

During this year’s contest, the top 8 women and top 16 men are also competing in a separate jumping contest known as the Red Bull Rockets, which is a special prize that will be awarded to the highest jump of the event, and that will undoubtedly be an important incentive for the riders. "The Red Bull Rockets will award the highest jump, so we're sure to see a great show," Dunkerbeck.

So far, Daida Moreno is winning this contest after landing a 4.4m stalled forward in the semifinal today, whilst Sarah-Quita Offringa is the next closest challenger after reaching a height of 3.9m during a forward loop.

    Men’s

After the completion of the Women’s Single Elimination, the remainder of the opening round of the Men’s Single Elimination was also completed and there weren’t any major upsets as; Alessio Stillrich, Alex Grand-Guillot (Starboard / Sailloft Hamburg), Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project), Julian Flechet (Tabou / Hot Sails Maui / Black Project), Aleix Sanllehy (Goya Windsurfing), Liam Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne Sails / Black Project), Loïck Lesauvage (Goya Windsurfing), Arthur Arutkin (Fanatic / Duotone / Black Project), Omar Sanchez (Tabou / GA Sail) and Mike Friedl (Goya Windsurfing) all booked their places in the round of 32.

The opening two heats of the second round were also completed before the close of play, which saw Josep Pons (CS Custom Boards / Point-7 / Black Project) defeat Jules Denel (JP / NeilPryde) in Heat 9a, whilst Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) came out on top in the battle of France against Baptiste Cloarec (RRD / RRD Sails).

In the final heat of the day - Heat 10 - Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing) set the highest scoring heat of day four as he posted a score of 20.37 points to knock out Jose Romero (Challenger Sails). Meanwhile, Marino Girl (Goya Windsurfing) emerged from a closely fought heat against Moritz Mauch and will now face Browne in the next round.

The forecast for tomorrow looks slightly lighter than today, but with the gradient wind expected to be more northeast than the previous days hopefully the thermal will kick in and there will be a few waves with the tide on the push in the morning. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 9:30am with the action commencing from 10am (GMT+1) onwards.

  • Das war Tag 5:

The Moreno Twins, Sarah-Quita Offringa & Justyna Sniady Share Their Thoughts on the Single Elimination After a Lighter Wind Day in Pozo

The wind teased the competitors for the majority of day 5 of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup as conditions remained on the edge of being competable. Throughout the day several sailors were tempted out on to the water, but the wind was never really strong enough to allow for consisting jumping and wave riding, so the contest remained on hold.

With the wind remaining on the lighter side we managed to catchup with the Moreno twins, who claimed the top two spots on the podium - Iballa (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) and Daida (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins), Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins), third in the single, and Justyna Sniady (North Sails / Maui Ultra Fins), who finished 4th, to gain their thoughts on how the Single Elimination went:

    GC22_ls_Ladies_top_four.jpeg

The top 4 women - Daida Moreno, Iballa Moreno, Sarah-Quita Offringa & Justyna Sniady (left to right)

Iballa Moreno: “Despite the conditions being challenging for everyone I was happy to make it through the heats especially making a final against my sister Daida!. I was riding 4.2m Severne Blade and board 72L. I felt comfortable throughout all the heats and focused to get my two jumps and two rides on the scoring line. Anyone could win a heat nowadays and I was lucky and happy that all went in my favour yesterday. I’m used to sail on bigger sails.”

    GC22_wv_Iballa_slash.jpg

    Iballa Moreno slash

Moreno Twins: “Super happy to have a result as the Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup. Both in the final. We have until Sunday to run the double elimination! But so far so good. Thanks to all the family and friends and sponsors for the support! Moreno Twins still in the fight."

    GC22_ls_Moreno_twins_on_top.jpg

The Moreno Twins - Daida (left) & Iballa (right)

Sarah-Quita Offringa: “Although yesterday wasn’t the conditions we are all looking for here in Pozo, I still had a lot of fun being on the water. The conditions were still suitable - just lighter than normal - so for once I wasn’t s******* my pants in a heat here when we are usually stacked on 3.3s, so it was nice to be powered on a 4.5m.

Gear wise I was riding my bigger 82l board paired with either my 4.5 or 4.7m. Normally I will take my 78l up to 4.0 here, but if it gets lighter than that then I change up my board size. Overall just really happy to be competing again and the level feels much higher and everyone sailed really well, so it was fun!”

    GC22_wv_Sarah_Quita_Offringa_push_loop.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

Justyna Sniady: "I started the competition 2 days ago by scoring over 19 points and was feeling confident in the water even in the marginal conditions we were getting.

As day 2 progressed and the tide got higher and higher it got more and more difficult to find waves or ramps to hit. I kept my cool in the quarterfinal finding the jumps and waves I needed. I was also happy with how I sailed in the semifinal, given the hard conditions, losing to Iballa as she found the waves I just couldn’t and ripped her way into the final.

In the losers final I felt as though the Ocean just didn’t cooperate with me anymore and I suffered that sinking feeling of facing complete flatness on almost every run out throughout that heat. I must say I was a bit gutted. Not as much about the position I got, but about not being able to show what I’ve learnt over the last 3 years. Meanwhile Sarah-Quita found good ramps and made a really great show using them, so big kudos for her performance in these tricky conditions! I know the ramps were there even in the loser final because I could see Sarah-Quita on them haha… I was just out of sync with the waves and it wasn’t my day.

All in all it was awesome to compete again and I was stoked to make the finals. Big congrats to all top 3 ladies pulling off some great moves.

I keep my fingers crossed for the double elimination and hoping to improve my performance. Still dreaming of getting the classic 3.3 crazy conditions with waves we got in 2019, but I will take anything :).

As far as the gear goes I sailed on the biggest gear I ever sailed in a heat in Pozo - a 78l board (my custom wobble and ride board for Australia) and a 4.2 North Wave (with some parts of the losers final on 3.7). Gear was working great, I really love how light even the bigger of my North Sails are, but I just need them to install a wave magnet in the next version!"

    Justyna Sniady

The forecast for tomorrow predicts slightly stronger winds than for today, so hopefully with a bit of luck we will be able to resume either the Men’s Single Elimination or begin the Boy’s U20 contest, which are the only fleets without a result for now. The sailors will meet again at 9:30am (GMT+1) tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 10am onwards - if conditions allow.

Only Top 12 Men Left Standing in Men’s Single Elimination

A slightly better forecast for Day 6 of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup produced more action as the Men’s Single Elimination resumed after a lay day on Wednesday. Now, only the top 12 men remain in the draw after an extremely close day of competition where there was almost nothing to separate several sailors. Today may not have been classic Pozo conditions, but the world’s best sailors still produced an outstanding display to keep everyone more than entertained.

    Men’s

Top seed, Ricardo Campello (Naish / Naish Sails), avoided any upsets in his first heat of the contest as he confidently dispatched of Mike Friedl (Goya Windsurfing) in Heat 16a. The reigning event champion landed a perfect double forward and a tweaked pushloop on his way to posting the highest scoring heat of the day - 21.24 points. The 37-year-old will now face Miguel Chapuis (JP / NeilPryde) in the round of 16 after the young Spaniard overcame local boy - Omar Sanchez (Tabou / GA Sails).

    Close Calls

Throughout the day there were several close calls with 4 heats being decided with less than a point separating the winner and loser. The closest of those heats involved Liam Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne Sails / Black Project Fins) and Antoine Martin (Starboard / North Sails) in Heat 14b - where by the end of the heat just 0.31 of a point separated them. This time the verdict went in Dunkerbeck’s favour as the 18-year-old claimed the biggest scalp of his young career thus far with his jumping inflicting the damage - meaning the young Spaniard advances into the third round for the first time in just his third event. Dunkerbeck will now meet Morgan Noireaux (JP / NeilPryde / Black Project Fins) in Heat 19b for a place in the quarterfinals. Noireaux also advanced from Heat 14 by less than a point after battling past Aleix Sanllehy (Goya Windsurfing).

    GC22_wv_Liam_huge_double.jpg

    Liam Dunkerbeck mid double forward

The other heats to see incredibly close duels were Heat 12a and Heat 17b. In Heat 12a Dieter Van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails) edged out another local - Alessio Stillrich - with the Belgian making the better of the waves on offer. In Heat 17b, Marino Gil (Goya Windsurfing) made a flying start against - Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing) - as he quickly opened with a one-footed backloop and a 7.38 point wave to put Browne under immediate pressure. Credit goes to Browne though, who didn’t get flustered and just stuck to his game plan. As the heat progressed the 2013 wave world champion slowly started to turn the screw by landing a one-hand, one-foot backloop and an excellent double forward, whilst he dropped his best wave score with his final effort to edge into the lead. Gil was slightly unfortunate as he spent the last few minutes of the heat desperately racing up and down looking for a ramp to improve his jumping score, but sadly the opportunity didn’t present itself and he eventually lost out by just 0.39 of a point.

    GC22_wv_Marcilio_Browne_goes_big.jpg

    Marcilio Browne fights back

On the other side of Heat 17 - Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) - claimed an excellent victory over Josep Pons (CS Custom Boards / Point-7 / Black Project Fins) to book his place in the quarterfinals by landing a one-footed backloop and a well executed tabletop forward. Pons, like Gil, found it difficult to hunt out a suitable ramp in the dying stages of the heat and was left to count a 2.75 point forward loop.

    GC22_wv_Traversa_table_forward.jpg

In what proved to be the final Men’s heat of the day - Marc Paré (Fanatic / Duotone) and Philip Köster (Severne / Severne Sails / Black Project Fins) - both produced great performances in diminishing conditions to end the hopes of - Julian Salmonn (Bruch Boards / GUNSAILS) and Dieter Van der Eyken. Paré and Köster have both looked like two of the best sailors on the water so far and they will now have a blockbuster showdown in the quarterfinals.

    Philip Köster

Only two heats of the round of 16 could be completed before the waves slackened off over high tide, so the remainder of the third round will be the priority tomorrow. Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project Fins) will face Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / Duotone), whilst Morgan Noireaux will go up against Liam Dunkerbeck. In the final heat to decide the top 8 sailors - Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / SWOX) will sail against fellow teammate - Leon Jamaer (JP / NeilPryde) - who left it late to fight back against Arthur Arutkin (Fanatic / Duotone / Black Project Fins), whilst ss previously mentioned, Campello takes on Chapuis.

    Boy’s

    U20s

During the early evening the first round of the Boy’s U20s was also completed, which saw; Samuele Ferraro, Esteban De Cruz (Severne / Severne Sails), Hayata Ishii (RRD / RRD Sails), Lars Bubelach (Tabou / GA Sails) and Jahdan Tyger (Quatro / Severne Sails) all progress.

The forecast for Friday looks positive with a similar forecast for today meaning that we should hopefully see more action on the water as the Men’s Single Elimination heads towards its climax. With low tide not being until 9:06 am (GMT+1), the sailors will meet slightly later tomorrow morning at 10am - giving a first possible start at 10:30am.
