SOMWR 10x Cabo Verde PWA Wave World Cup 2022

Bernd Roediger Successfully Defends Single Elimination Crown to Claim Maiden Victory on the World Tour

After a weekend forecast, where expectations were incredibly high failed to materialise, it looked as though we may not be able to finish the Double Elimination of the 2022 SOMWR 10x Cabo Verde PWA World Cup. However, after an early morning check revealed that Ponta Preta was flat the decision was soon made to move the contest to Little Ho’okipa.

That decision paid off handsomely as the Double Elimination was completed with less than an hour of daylight to spare on the final day. Little Ho’okipa provided an extremely different test to Ponta Preta, but ultimately the same man came out on top as - Bernd Roediger (Flikka / Hot Sails Maui / Black Project) - successfully defended his first place from the Single Elimination to claim his maiden victory on the World Tour.

The sweet taste of victory for Bernd Roediger

    Double Elimination

Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing) finally brought Camille Juban’s (AV Boards / S2Maui) epic comeback to an end to setup a final against - Bernd Roediger. If the Brazilian was going to come back and win the event then he would be required to beat Roediger twice with this being the Double Elimination. However, Roediger wasn’t in the mood for letting this opportunity slip through his hands and he soon put the contest to bed with an accomplished display. The victory here was made all the more impressive due to the final being sailed in completely different conditions to the Single Elimination as the 25-year-old showed he is an extremely well rounded sailor, who is capable of beating the best sailors in the world, whether it be in pumping down-the-line at Ponta Preta, or 3 foot choppy Little Ho’okipa.

Browne was one of the favourites for the event title and he proved why over the last 9 days. The Brazilian just misses out on making the perfect start to the season, but he can be delighted with his efforts here, which ensures he gets his latest world title challenge off to an excellent start and now has the perfect platform to build upon as the season progresses.

The comeback story of the Double Elimination belongs to - Camille Juban (AV Boards / S2Maui) - after the 31-year-old went on a tear to force his way on to the podium after a quite brilliant display of sailing, which saw him win 7 heats on the bounce.

Elsewhere, Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) and Antoine Martin (Starboard / North Sails) both drop one place from the Single Elimination to 4th and 5th respectively.

Takara Ishii (RRD / RRD Sails) was another sailor to make a surging comeback through the Double Elimination and the 21-year-old will be absolutely delighted with his efforts today after advancing through 5 consecutive heats to earn his best result to date on the World Tour - 6th.

The event couldn’t have started much worse for - Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / Duotone / SWOX) - after the Spaniard was knocked out in the opening round of the Single Elimination. However, in true champion fashion the 3-time world champion turned things around in the Double Elimination and eventually managed to recover into 7th place.

Like Takara Ishii, Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project), also walks away from Cabo Verde with his best result to date on the World Tour - 8th - and both of these young Japanese rippers look like the real deal with bright futures ahead of them.

The top 10 is completed by local legend - Josh Angulo (Angulo) and Ricardo Campello (Naish / Naish Sails) - but we’ll take more of a look through the rankings in the Event Summary. Today though belongs to Bernd Roediger after claiming a quite magnificent victory. Congratulations once again.

  • Die Zusammenfassung:

Cabo Verde Provides a Brilliant Opening to the 2022 Season as Bernd Roediger Claims First Win

The 2022 SOMWR 10x Cabo Verde PWA World Cup saw the world’s finest male wave sailors compete at two locations in Sal in order to complete the Double Elimination on the final day of the event. The Single Elimination was completed at Ponta Preta in pumping (head-logo) down-the-line surf, but as a promising weekend forecast failed to materialise, the event went mobile as the contest relocated to Little Ho’okipa - where the contest was completed in very different conditions - 3 foot choppy surf.

Bernd Roediger (Flikka / Hot Sails Maui / Black Project) was a worthy winner in the Single Elimination as the 25-year-old excelled at Ponta Preta - reading the wave beautifully and combining free-flowing turns with aerial manoeuvres to take a stranglehold of the event as he fended off Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing), Antoine Martin (Starboard / North Sails) and Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) in the Final. However, it wasn’t just in the Single Elimination that Roediger excelled as he also showed off his ability to compete in totally different conditions and still be extremely dangerous - landing vert turns and goiters once again to see off Browne in the Double Elimination Final and rightfully walk away from Cabo Verde as the 2022 SOMWR 10x Cabo Verde PWA World Cup Champion - after a stern test and an event that he almost didn’t attend in the first place.

2019 vice-world champion - Marcilio Browne - makes the best start out of the normal title contenders - with reigning world champion - Philip Köster (Severne / Severne Sails / Black Project) - suffering a first round exit in the Double Elimination - 25th overall, whilst Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / Duotone / SWOX), did well to recover into 7th place after a solid come back through the double. Between them, Köster & Fernandez have won each title between 2015-2019, so this opens up the title race slightly, even at this early stage. Browne claimed second place here with his usual variety of powerful turns and aerial prowess and looks set for another strong season.

    Marcilio Browne

The only other men to have won the world title since 2010 are Browne in 2013, and Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) in 2014, who also made an excellent start In Cabo Verde after finishing 4th overall and the Frenchman will fancy another shot at a world title run in after a bright start to the season. As will - Antoine Martin, who earned the highest scoring wave and heat total of the event during the quarterfinals of the Single Elimination - dropping an amazing 9.38 point wave for a huge aerial, whilst amassing a total of 17.76 points. The 2019 Aloha Classic Champion claims 5th place in Cabo Verde, which represents his best start to a season on the World Tour.

Camille Juban (AV Boards / S2Maui) produced a storming come back through the Double Elimination to earn the final place on the prestigious podium with a quite brilliant display of sailing, which saw the 31-year-old advance through 7 consecutive heats.

Takara Ishii (RRD / RRD Sails) had looked dangerous in his opening heat of the Single Elimination, but despite earning the highest single wave score in Heat 1 he couldn’t find a suitable backup score to progress. However, in the Double Elimination, the young ripper started to gather momentum and would only be stopped in the end, by the on fire Juban, after advancing through 5 consecutive heats. After some excellent sailing the 21-year-old earns his best result to date on the World Tour - 6th - whilst fellow countryman - 19-year-old Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project) - also claims his best result - 8th.

    All smiles for Takara Ishii

Elsewhere, Ricardo Campello (Naish / Naish Sails), who has been a in contention for the title in recent years had to settle for a joint 9th place alongside local legend - Josh Angulo (Angulo), who showed he can still mix it up with the best in the business at Ponta Preta. Angulo finished 5th in the Single, but couldn’t quite defend that place in the Double.

As well as Ishii and Sugi, several of the other next generation of sailors coming through the ranks also made notable performances. 19-year-old Marino Gil (Goya Windsurfing) was able to claim his place in the top 16 - 15th, whilst Jake Schettewi (JP / NeilPryde / Black Project) and Baptiste Cloarec, both 21, finished in joint 17th. Meanwhile, 18-year-old - Liam Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne / Black Project), son of the legendary Björn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne), was able to claim 21st in just his second event on the full World Tour.

The last 9 days have once again illustrated the potential of Cabo Verde, Sal, as a world class location for windsurfing with several spots to choose from depending both on the swell direction and wind direction, whilst also offering flat water spots, so there really is something for everyone here. It’s been a real honour for the PWA to return to the shores of Cabo Verde for the first time since 2010 and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Josh Angulo, and his team, for their instrumental role in making the event possible. We hope to see you again in 2023.
