2017 Mercedes-Benz Sylt PWA Grand Slam

  • Moin Zusammen,

Macht doch mal wieder was anständiges...

Day 5 of the Mercedes-Benz Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam saw the mettle of the freestyler sailors tested to the limit as they competed in some of the toughest freestyle conditions seen for many seasons.

    SY17_fs_Gollito_lets_go.jpg

Gollito Estredo bails out after victory

With bolt onshore wind, walls of whitewater everywhere and a strong side shore rip which was more like a river, many sailors struggled to even make it out for their heats, but the majority of the usual suspects still navigated their way into the latter stages of the elimination with 3 of the top 4 sailors from Fuerte claiming the podium positions in the single elimination - Gollito Estredo (Fanatic / NorthSails), Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) and Jacopo Testa (RRD / RRD Sails).

    Freestyle

    Single Elimination

7-time PWA Freestyle World Champion - Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / NorthSails) - came into the final freestyle event of the year leading the rankings and the Venezuelan edged ever closer to an 8th world title after claiming a hard fought victory against Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne). Gollito showed himself to be the ultimate competitor again today as he produced his highest scoring heat in the final to earn 128.3 points with an air kabikuchi and a stunning shifty being his standout manoeuvres.

    SY17_fs_Gollito_action.jpg

    Gollito Estredo

With a rain squall causing the wind to pick up in the final Vrieswijk was overpowered on his 4.8m and couldn’t quite replicate the outstanding performance he produced in the semifinal against Antoine Albert (Goya Windsurfing) in which he recorded the highest scoring heat of the day 136 points as he landed a trademark double air culo. The Bonairean had generally looked in dominant form today, but he did face a major scare against Tonky Frans (RRD / RRD Sails) with Frans producing a jumping masterclass and in the end, Vrieswijk just scraped through by just 0.7 of a point from Heat 18b.

    SY17_fs_Amado_push_loop.jpg

Jacopo Testa (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360) built upon his result from Fuerte where he finished 4th - his best result yet on the world tour- by securing the final place on the podium - showing that he is developing into one of the most dangerous freestyle sailors on the planet no matter the conditions. The Italian made the conditions today look relatively easy, where others struggled so badly and he’ll now aim to defend his place on the podium, which would also see him break into overall top 3 for the first time in his career.

    SY17_fs_Jacapo_Testa.jpg

    Jacopo Testa

Antoine Albert may have just missed out in the battle for 3rd but the New Caledonian will still be delighted with his efforts today after breaking into the top 4 for the first time in his career with an inspired display, which means he is guaranteed his best result ever on the world tour as he can now finish in 5th place at worse. The 23-year-old caused an upset as he took down current world No.3 Yentel Caers (JP / Point-7) in the 3rd round before also dispatching of Balz Müller (Patrik / Severne) to move into the semifinals.

    SY17_fs_Albert_on_form.jpg

    Antoine Albert

Elsewhere in the single elimination France’s Sam Esteve (JP / NeilPryde) and Italy’s Mattia Fabrizi (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg) both advanced into the top 5 for the first time in their careers. Esteve faced former world champion Kiri Thode (JP) in the second round, but with the Bonairean failing to make it out the 19-year-old advanced before claiming the scalp of Philip Soltysiak (Starboard / Sailworks), but he couldn’t find a way past Vrieswijk in the quarterfinals.

    SY17_fs_Sam_Esteve.jpg

Meanwhile, Fabrizi first dispatched of Loick Spicher (RRD / RRD Sails) before causing one of the biggest upsets of the day as he defeated Steven Van Broeckhoven (JP / NeilPryde), but unfortunately the 25-year-old then snapped his mast in the opening minutes of his quarterfinal against Gollito to end his chances of causing any further upsets.

    SY17_fs_Mattia_Fabrizi.jpg

Also finishing in joint 5th for the single are Balz Müller and Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / NorthSails / Maui Ultra Fins).

After a short break, the double elimination resumed and things looked a little easier from the beach with the angle slightly improving and the wind increasing.

Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) defeated Tony Mõttus (JP / NeilPryde) in the single elimination before being a little unlucky to meet Gollito in Heat 16b - especially as he’d have easily progressed from Heat 16a with Julien Mas (JP / GunSails) progressing with just a landed flaka - with himself and Giovanni Passani (Tabou / GA Sails / AL360) having a nightmare getting out. Traversa then received a bye into the next round with Tilo Eber (JP / NeilPryde) not present - however, TT still produce an amazing eagle wing - but then chose to withdraw from the contest after slightly injuring himself to save himself for his main focus - the waves. While Passani successfully made it out in the double elimination to defeat Adam Sims (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg) and moved directly into the 3rd round with Traversa withdrawing.

Elsewhere, Loick Spicher (RRD / RRD Sails), Francesco Cappuzzo (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360), Nic Hibdige (Tabou / GA Sails), Youp Schmit (99NoveNove / Avanti), Max Rowe (Simmer / Simmer Style / Mystic), Davy Scheffers (Tabou / GA Sails) and Riccardo Marca (Fanatic / NorthSails) all progressed through the opening two rounds.

    SY17_fs_Youp_Schmidt.jpg

    Youp Schmit

Meanwhile, Kiri Thode’s day went from bad to worse as the former world champion was knocked out in the first round of the double by Jeremy Plüss (Tabou / GA Sails), while Venezuela’s Deivis Paternina Teran (99NoveNove / Loft Sails) also suffered the same fate at the hands of Max Matissek (Fanatic / NorthSails). Paternina landed a sick air shuvit spock, but didn’t complete a single move on starboard tack. In Heat 34b Marco Lufen (Fanatic / NorthSails / Maui Ultra Fins) also failed to land a move on starboard tack, which is perhaps a testament to just how testing the conditions were.

    SY17_wv_Kiri_Thode.jpg

    Kiri Thode

The wind and wave machine looks set to continue tomorrow with potentially epic conditions forecast - westerly winds up to 40 knots accompanied by waves of up to 3.6m by the evening - which means it is likely that the plan will be to resume the wave contest tomorrow if those conditions do materialise. Tomorrow promises to be another action packed day so with this in mind the skippers’ meetings have been called for the following times: All Times (GMT+2)

    Wave 8am - first possible start 8:30am

    Slalom 10am - first possible start 10:30am

    Freestyle 11am - first possible start 11:30am

  • 40 knt onshore, was wollen die fahren?

    ...

Go Balz!!!

Day 6 of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam certainly didn’t disappoint as the North Sea continued to provide dredging North Sea nuggets and storm force winds, which resulted in some of the most radical action of the season being thrown down as the world’s best sailors threw caution to the wind in their battle for glory. The conditions were so hardcore that Ricardo Campello (Point-7) classed it as the hardest conditions that he has ever sailed in.

    SY17_wv_Sylt_shore_dump.jpg

    Men’s

At the start of the day all eyes were focused on the potential semifinal matchup between world title contenders - Philip Köster (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / NorthSails / Shamal Sunglasses) - and both sailors successfully navigated their ways past Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) and Adam Lewis (Fanatic / NorthSails / SWOX) respectively to do just that.

Put simply, if Köster won the opening semifinal then he would officially be crowned world champion as he would be guaranteed 3rd place at worse in the double elimination and in order for Fernandez to deny the German he would need to finish at least 3 places ahead of him.

    SY17_wv_Fernandez_Takes_down_Koester.jpg

Philip Köster & Victor Fernandez go head-to-head

Unfortunately, for Köster, Fernandez was not ready to give up the chance of defending his world title and in the single elimination Fernandez was on another level to anyone else - launching into monstrous double forwards and backloops, while looking far more dynamic and effective on the wave as he effortlessly carried board speed, where others really struggled, from rail turn to rail turn to deservedly defeat Köster first and then Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing) in the winners’ final.

    SY17_wv_Victor_double_loop.jpg

    Victor Fernandez wins Single Elimination

Fernandez had done absolutely everything in his power to defend his world title, but with his fate out of his own hands, he would need a massive favour from fellow countryman - Alex Mussolini (RRD / RRD Sails) - in the losers’ final. Mussolini, who won the event here in 2016, outscored Köster on the waves but was lacking a second serious scoring jump to every really threaten Köster who landed a trademark double forward - meaning that at the end of the single elimination Köster still held the title race lead. However, the title wasn’t decided yet as Köster could still potentially fall one place to 4th, which would leave the door open for Fernandez to snatch the title - providing he could defend the top spot on the podium.

    SY17_wv_Koester_forward.jpg

    Philip Köster

    The Title Decider

In the single elimination Köster hadn’t looked quite as dangerous as he had in both Gran Canaria and Tenerife earlier this summer - whether that was down to nerves or purely the conditions being extremely tricky who knows, but in the double elimination, he raised his game to another level. In the title decider against Mussolini - when he should’ve have been at his most nervous and most under pressure he seemed to sail with a sense of freedom that left the result in no question as the 23-year-old posted the highest scoring heat of the contest, which saw him land another trademark double, while posting an almost perfect wave score of 19.45 points out of a possible 20 - performing a Klei - a wave move invented by Mussolini - and a goiter on the same wave to win his 4th world title in style! Köster was understandably delighted and was punching the air in celebration.

    SY17_wv_Philip_Koester.jpg

    Philip Köster mid goiter

Marcilio Browne then defeated Köster in the very next heat in a duel which saw the wind swinging between starboard and port tack and driving rain. Browne was able to make the most of the limited conditions on offer to defend his second place from the single elimination and he will still have a shot to claim the event title if he can beat Fernandez twice. The Brazilian should already be quite happy with his performance here and throughout the season as he is guaranteed to complete the overall podium again and looks a genuine title challenger for next year.

    SY17_wv_Brawzinho_forward.jpg

    Marcilio Browne

Mussolini may not have been able to gain the upper hand over Köster today, but he still produced a few moments of magic with trademark 360s and 4th place here sees the Spaniard climb two places in the overall rankings from 6th to 4th.

    SY17_wv_Musso_360.jpg

    Alex Mussolini frontside 3

Adam Lewis (Fanatic / NorthSails / SWOX) won 3 heats on the bounce to earn his best ever overall result on the world tour - 5th - and the Brit was obviously delighted with his efforts after ending Ricardo Campello’s comeback before also defeating Thomas Travers (Tabou / GA Sails) and Jaeger Stone (Starboard / Severne / SWOX / Shamal Sunglasses) as he continually attacked the heaviest sections he could find, while launching into massive one-footed double kick backloops. Lewis then faced Mussolini in a battle for 4th in the overall rankings, but his previous exerts in the draining conditions had clearly taken their toll by that point.

    SY17_wv_Lewis_wave_360.jpg

    Adam Lewis inverted

Jaeger Stone ends the season with his best result of the year - 6th - whilst Aleix Sanllehy (Tabou / GA Sails), who threw down several crazy one-handed tweaked pushloops, records his best ever result - joint 7th alongside Thomas Traversa.

    SY17_wv_Sanllehy_goes_huge.jpg

    Aleix Sanllehy styling it

The top 10 is completed by Leon Jamaer (JP / NeilPryde), who won 3 consecutive heats with victories over Adrian Beholz (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg / Maui Ultra Fins), Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / Mystic / SWOX) in a heat that was almost too close to call and Camille Juban (Quatro / Simmer Sails).

    SY17_wv_Jamaer_action.jpg

    Leon Jamaer

Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic / NorthSails) also fought his way back into joint 9th with victories over Gollito Estredo (Fanatic / NorthSails), Dany Bruch (Starboard / Flight Sails / AL360 / Shamal Sunglasses) and Josh Angulo (Angulo / S2Maui) - before Stone ended his hopes.

    SY17_wv_One_hand_One_leg.jpg

    Stone ends Stillrich comeback

The same is also true for the exciting talent of Marc Paré (Simmer / Simmer Sails), who finishes the season with consecutive top 10 finishes after beating good friend Julian Salmonn (Severne / Severne Sails), Moritz Mauch (Severne / Severne Sails) before staging a late comeback to dispatch of Klaas Voget (Fanatic / NorthSails) again with a combination of frontside 360s and huge stalled forwards.

    SY17_wv_Pare_goes_big.jpg

    Marc Paré goes big

    Pushloop Forward King

From the jumping aspect of his sailing you would never be able to tell that Ricardo Campello was sailing with an injured ankle as he landed 4 pushloop forwards in 3 heats to earn perfect 10s on two occasions - proving that he is the King of this move - in fact only Antoine Martin (JP / NeilPryde) was the only other sailor to land pushloop forward. However, while his jumping was still as radical as ever his ankle definitely affected his frontside wave riding, which eventually caught up and you’d have to think if fully fit then he could have advanced deeper into the double elimination than joint 9th.

    SY17_wv_Campello_pushloop_forward.jpg

Pushloop Forward King - Ricardo Campello

The conditions today saw many outstanding performances with all the sailors absolutely charging in what were essentially true storm chase conditions and you have to take your hat off to the best sailors the world again as they produced a radical display in the most hardcore of conditions, but ultimately today belongs to Köster, who wins his 4th world title at the age of just 23-years-old.

    SY17_wv_KOester_Takes_the_title.jpg

    A Jubilant Philip Köster

After another long and exhilarating day of competition, the forecast looks a bit funky for tomorrow with different forecasts calling for different possibilities so we will have to wait and see what Thursday brings. The skippers’ meetings for all disciplines will be held at 10am tomorrow morning with a first possible start for the wave and freestyle at 10:30am - while the first possible start for the slalom will be 11am (GMT+2).

  • absolut geil.
