Zitat von PWAThe 2010 Catalunya – Costa Brava (Spain) PWA Slalom World Cup - Day 6
Dunkerbeck and Jaggi conquer a mentally grueling day on the golden sands to claim their crowns in Catalunya.
By midday a gentle breeze began to build creating a tense atmosphere on the Catalunyan coast for the final few hours of competition. The sailors sweated it out on the shoreline, ready to race at a moments notice for the entire afternoon, but the wind was simply of teasing force, and not suitable for official competition.
The occasional gust was however enough for flyweight star Steve Allen (Starboard, Severne) to get going on his 9m+ sail and 130L board, but even he struggled to fully plane out of the gybes, leaving the competition firmly on hold.
Until the final call was made, the likes of Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard, Severne, Mystic) and Karin Jaggi (Patrik, Severne) were on the edge of their seats. Deep down they knew that going racing would only mean one thing - they had to prove themselves once more to retain their current positions at the top of the world’s toughest podium. If they stayed on the beach, they’d already won!
The French contingent of Antoine Albeau (JP, NeilPryde) and Cyril Moussilmani (Starboard, North) had nothing to lose but plenty to gain by finishing the final of race two so were praying to god for the wind to arrive. Unfortunately for them it was not to be, and they’ll have to wait until the Canaries now to fight it out another day.
Champion Sound
Bjorn Dunkerbeck:
“In Costa Brava the most important thing is to win the first race because that’s often all we get here. Last year we only did one and a quarter races, this year we got a little bit further but not much. It’s always more fun winning when we’ve completed ten races during the week, but it’s a great step for Severne sails. It’s not such a big step for me, although it’s been a while since I last won a competition, which was Sylt in 2008. However, I really feel it’s a step in the right direction for Starboard and Severne because all of our hard work has paid off with my second in Korea, and first here in Costa Brava. The next one in Fuerteventura is going to be a better one for me because there’s always more wind there than at the last two events of the season. Also, our smaller sails are working really well too so it’ll be exciting racing.”
Karin Jaggi:
“I’m stoked to have won my second event in a row. It actually feels even better to win here in Costa Brava because Valerie was racing as well, and we had a big fleet with twenty-one women racing which is great for the sport. I had a slight issue in the first race final because I went out on gear that was too big. But, the final of race 2 was really good fun because we had some big swell which made a change to the flat water we’ve been sailing in for the last few years. This win is also great for me because it’s the first time I’ve beaten Valerie in over a year.”

Das war Tag 5:
Zitat von PWAThe 2010 Catalunya – Costa Brava (Spain) PWA Slalom World Cup - Day 5
Team Swiss-Severne are just hours away from claiming their Catalunyan crowns.
The fifth day of competition started in the usual laid back Spanish style on the beautiful beaches of Costa Brava with plenty of time for gear tuning and tennis. This also gave the huge weekend crowds the opportunity to mingle with their windsurfing heroes and soak up the world tour atmosphere.
Early in the afternoon a light onshore breeze kick started the sailors into action, and with the hope that the finals of the men’s race 2 could be completed, the top seeds hit the water early. Despite the race crew making every effort to get the competition underway, the wind failed to strengthen enough to meet the minimum requirement for racing which leaves the event standings the same as yesterday.
The 2000 PWA overall world champion, Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, DaKine) was one of the first to grab his gear and prepare for the possibility of racing. We caught up with him when he arrived back onshore.
PWA: What gear were you using this afternoon?
KP: “I was testing my 9.3 Gaastra Vapor, with my Starboard iSonic 131, and a Deboichet 50cm fin. It would have been an awesome combination to use for the light wind racing if it had stayed at around 8-10 knots. I was out testing with my tuning partner, Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra) who was also on his 9.3 Vapor.”
PWA: What gear did you register for the tour this year?
KP: “I registered the new Gaastra Vapors in 9.3, 8.4, 7.6, 6.7, 6.0, and 5.5. As for boards, they are Starboard iSonics in 131L, 111L, and 94L versions.”
PWA: Why did you choose those sizes?
KP: “I chose all of those because they give me the best range for the places we compete at, and for my weight of 92kgs.”
PWA: Which combination do you like competing on the most?
KP: “Well, my favorite is actually the iSonic 86, but with no slalom in Gran Canaria this year, I didn’t register it. The 86 is the one I train on the most in Maui. I love sailing that completely maxed out on my 5.5 or 6.0 at full tilt!”
PWA: What are the biggest changes to your gear from last year?
KP: “Our aim was to make both the boards and sails more versatile for a wider wind range, and to be fast in a more diverse range of conditions, and I think we’ve achieved this.”
PWA: Seat or waist harness?
KP: “Waist for more control. You can use your body weight more easily, and it’s faster to hook in and out of.”
PWA: If you could only have one set up, what would it be?
KP: “The new iSonic 111 and the 7.6 Vapor. You could go out in a huge range of conditions with that gear.”
With the current forecast, the organizers remain hopeful that more dramatic racing will take place on the final day of competition in Costa Brava.

Hallo Christian,

Totti

Das war Tag 3:
Zitat von PWAThe 2010 Catalunya – Costa Brava (Spain) PWA Slalom World Cup - Day 3
A full day of drama sees Jaggi claim victory whilst Dunkerbeck and Albeau were saved by lady luck!
Following an afternoon of being held on the beach, the wind gods blessed the Catalunyan coast with 15-20 knots of wind allowing the men to kick off proceedings with heat 7 of race 2 in the early evening.
The wind played havoc for many heats, but did allow the men to get as far as the finals of race 2, and the women to complete another full elimination. Which unfortunately means we’ll have to wait for another day before the men’s race 2 reaches its full conclusion.
Equipment choices were key as big swells and gusty winds caused chaos on the racecourse. Sailors that could get away with smaller boards had a huge advantage when the waves jacked up, but where left for dead when the wind was down.
Luck Of The Legends
Minutes after Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard, Severne, Mystic) hit the water his mast was in pieces. With very little time left before his heat, many of the spectators thought he’d blown it. However, luck seemed to be very much on his side. Just as the heat before his was about to go into sequence, one of the marks broke free from its anchor and surfed its way into the shore on the pumping swell. Luckily, this bought Dunkerbeck more than enough time to get to the beach and sort out some new gear.
Antoine Albeau (JP, NeilPryde) received a similar stroke of luck during his qualifying heat for the semi finals. Throughout the race he was seen playing catch up from a terrible start. By the final leg he’d only caught up to sixth position. However, the minute he sheeted in on the new side after the gybe the wind dropped below 5 knots. The race was cancelled, and Albeau was given the chance to race again!
Both Albeau and Dunkerbeck made it through to the winner’s final in the end, but the lack of wind towards the end of the evening stopped the competition from proceeding any further.
Jaggi Evens The Scores
The awesomely consistent Karin Jaggi (Patrik, Severne) stamped her authority on the women’s fleet here in Catalunya today after a convincing performance saw her claim victory in front of her nearest rival Valerie Arrighetti (Tabou, Loft). This wasn’t without any dramas though. In her qualifying heat, Jaggi fell at the final mark after leading throughout the whole race. Luckily she managed to waterstart away having only let two of her rivals pass only to overtake them again and claim victory!
This leaves Jaggi and Arrighetti on equal scores as it stands, but if no more racing were to take place, Jaggi would take the event crown on count back.

Eye On The Sky
The organizers remain hopeful that the current forecast will allow for more fast and furious racing to take place here in Catalunya over the next few days, so stay tuned to the PWA site.
