2019 Catalunya PWA World Cup

  • After the Asian leg of the tour, the world’s best male Foil sailors have raced back across the globe to Costa Brava, Spain, ready to compete at the 2019 Catalunya PWA World Cup, which incidentally, is also first Foil only event on the PWA World Tour and runs between 28th May to 2nd June.

The picturesque town of Sant Pere Pescador is located 150km to the north-east of Barcelona and is blessed with twelve kilometres of stunning white sand beaches and the beautiful blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The Gulf-de-Roses have become a world renowned destination due to its clockwork-like sea breezes, which frequently grace Costa Brava with their presence during the summer months. However, whilst offering an astonishing backdrop, the Pyrenees Mountain’s can also transform Costa Brava into a white-knuckled assault course - when the ferocious Tramontana wind whistles down the mountain range in excess of thirty knots - however with this year’s Catalunya PWA World Cup being purely Foiling we will have to cross our fingers that the Tramontana doesn’t arrive.

    Cruising in Costa Brava

    Men’s Foil

The wonderful world of foiling, which is still a relatively new discipline continues to be as unpredictable as ever - results-wise at least - with no one particular sailor dominating at the moment. In fact if you look back over the last 5 events there has been 5 different winners’ - reigning world champion Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil), Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde), Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne / Starboard Foil), Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses / Starboard Foil) and the latest sailor to add their name to the winners’ list - Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / LOKEFOIL) - with the Frenchman winning his first event in Japan earlier this month. Will this weeks winner come from the aforementioned group? Or will there be another new name stood at the top of the podium come the end of the week?

Amado Vrieswijk is the defending event champion having claimed a superb victory here in 2018 and the Bonairean made a solid start in Japan with a 6th place. Vrieswijk reportedly hadn’t been focusing much on racing over the winter, but that doesn’t seem to have affected him so far, and with undoubtedly continue to improve with more races under his belt. Expect to see Vrieswijk give his title defence a good run.

    9c31b35908.jpg

Amado Vrieswijk leading the way last year

However, there will be plenty of sailors ready to take their shot at the top spot on the podium. Firstly vice-world champion - Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails / Starboard Foil) - who finished tied on points with Mortefon in Japan, then there is Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils), who finished 3rd overall in 2018 and has now recorded back-to-back foil podiums - Sylt 2018 & Japan ’19- while world champion Costa Hoevel will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 25th place in the opener to get his season up and running.

    730cf984e3.jpg

    Sebastian Kördel

Elsewhere, Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde) should be a threat again after finishing 4th in Japan - the Dane’s best result since 2017.

    65688cb899.jpg

    Sebastian Kornum

    The Goyard Brother’s

Both Thomas Goyard (FMX Racing / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) and Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails / Phantom Foils) should also be in the mix. Between them, they won all 3 eliminations completed in Japan - 2 for Thomas and 1 for Nicolas - but both made one major error each, which cost them a shot at the event title. If they can rule out such big errors then they should be in contention again.

    Nicolas Goyard

    Olympics / RSX

Double Olympic Champion - Dorian vs Rijsselberghe (Future Fly / Gun Sails) will also be gracing the field with his presence and with his expertise should be an obvious threat, while fellow former Olympian and last year’s world No.6 Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) is also likely to be in contention, as is Tokyo 2020 Olympic hopeful Kiran Badloe (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil), who led the fleet after the opening day in Japan, but like the Goyard Brother’s made one costly error which saw him just miss out on the top 10.

    22d97d7af8.jpg

Julien Bontemps victory leap after winning an elimination last year

Meanwhile, Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde), who finished 3rd overall for 2018 will be hoping for slightly stronger winds than in Japan as the heavyweight struggled in the extremely light airs. If conditions are on the windier end of the Foiling spectrum expect to see Albeau feature heavily.

    Antoine Albeau

Elsewhere, don’t be surprised to see a strong performance from Antoine Questel (I-99 / S2Maui / Starboard Foil), who won the exhibition Foil series in 2017, while finishing 10th overall last year. The likes of Arnon Dagan (Future Fly / NeilPryde), Maciek Rutkowski (FMX Racing / Challenger Sails), Steven Van Broeckhoven (Starboard / Gun Sails / Shamal Sunglasses / Starboard Foil), Steve Allen (Patrik / Severne), could all feature in the top 10, while Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / Duotone / LOKEFOIL) and Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) will be hoping to transfer their recent success on the Slalom course in South Korea on to the Foil course in Costa Brava.

The forecast for the opening day currently looks as though the Tramontana could kick in with north to north-northeast winds of 12-18 knots currently on the forecast, while Wednesday morning the wind is expected to remain from the North. However by the afternoon the wind is forecast to return to the south and by Thursday afternoon the wind should be back to its normal southwesterly airflow, which should see the local sea breeze kick in. Don’t miss any of the action by tuning into www.pwaworldtour.com between 28th May to 2nd June.

  • Das war Tag 1:

Registration on the inaugural day of the 2019 Catalunya PWA World Cup took place during the morning and with the sailors rigged and ready for action the first Foil elimination of the week began a couple of hours after the opening ceremony was held.

    CB19_ls_Speech_time.jpg

    The opening ceremony

However, things weren’t particularly easy with the Tramontana fighting the local thermal for a time, while several sailors were less than happy that the first race was allowed to stand with the wind being on the limit, which may lead to the criteria for the lower end of the spectrum being reviewed.

    Foil

Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde), who finished 3rd here last season, made the perfect start to proceedings by claiming his first bullet of the year, and of the event, to take the overnight lead after the first day.

    CB19_fl_Bontemps_wins.jpg

The Goyard brother’s chased Bontemps home, but couldn’t quite pass the Frenchman on this occasion. Thomas Goyard (FMX Racing / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils), who won two out of the 3 eliminations in Japan, claimed second place just ahead of Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails / Phantom Foils).

    CB19_fl_Thomas_Goyard.jpg

    Thomas Goyard and Nicolas Goyard

Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) made a solid start by securing 4th place ahead of Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde) and reigning world champion - Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) - who recorded a 6th place, which is his best result of the season in a single race after a disappointing Japan.

    CB19_ls_Gonzalo_Costa_Hoevel.jpg

Elsewhere, William Huppert (Fanatic / Duotone / LOKEFOIL) also equalled his best this season in a single race - 7th - while Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils), Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails / Starboard Foil) and Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne / Starboard Foil) complete the top 10.

Reigning event champion - Amado Vrieswijk

Kiran Badloe (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil), who led the event in Japan after the first day of racing, made a catastrophic mistake in the semifinals to cost himself a place in the winners’ final. The 25-year-old was comfortably qualifying in 4th place as he approached the finish line, but while glancing over his shoulder wiped out 20 or 30 yards before the finish line to miss out!

    CB19_Kiran_Badloe_mistake.jpg

Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde) was one of the sailors unhappy to hear that the opening elimination would stand. The 25-time world champion won his semifinal and looked prominently placed in the opening stages of the final, but then struggled in the light airs as he did in

    Japan.

The forecast for tomorrow shows the Tramontana continuing during the morning, but by 5pm the wind is expected to shift back to the southwest. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 9am on Wednesday with a first possible start at 10am (GMT+2)

  • Tag 2:

After howling through the night, the Tramontana continued to blow at full force throughout the second day of the 2019 Catalunya PWA World Cup, meaning there were only two very brief periods when it was possible to safely race on Foils. Just to try and put into perspective how windy it truly was, the maximum recorded gust today was 59.9 knots as the Tramontana showed its face for the first time since the 2011 edition.

    CB19_ls_Holding_on.jpg

    Hold on to your foils

In the end, it was only possible to complete one Foil elimination, and for the majority of that time it really was a survival mission with many of the eventual finalists still qualifying after falling multiple times.

    CB19_fl_Man_down.jpg

    Costa Brava claims it's victims

The final itself proved to be an exciting affair with the lead changing hands several on several occasions. Current world tour leader - Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / LOKEFOIL) - led the race to the upwind mark, but Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails / Phantom Foils) soon picked up pole position, only to be hunted down by Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde), who showed incredible speed on the downwind leg. However, Albeau then ran super wide when gybing, which he blamed on the media boat interfering, which allowed Goyard to retake the lead and open up a decent advantage. However, the Frenchman then fell on the gybe meaning Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) would come through and collect the lead, but the man from Guadeloupe was hard pressed by Albeau, who flew down the donwwind leg again, which led to a photo-finish. The decision went in the favour of Algret, who managed to just hold on was absolutely delighted upon returning to the beach after winning his first ever elimination on the world tour, building upon claiming his first ever podium last week in South Korea. Albeau came to complain about the press boat incident, but his pleas fell on deaf ears this time around.

Upon completion of the second race, Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) has extended his lead at the top of event rankings to 5.3 points after a solid 6th place - adding to the bullet he claimed yesterday.

    CB19_fl_julien_Bontemps.jpg

    Julien Bontemps

Bontemps closest rival at this stage is fellow countryman - Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) - who continues his fine start to the season. Cousin is the day’s biggest mover within the top 10 - improving from 8th in the overnight standings to second place after finishing 4th in today’s race.

    CB19_fl_Cousin_cruising.jpg

    Alexandre Cousin

Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) climbs into the top 3 having finished 9th in Elimination 2, while Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) rises to 4th in the overnight rankings ahead of William Huppert (Fanatic / Duotone / LOKEFOIL), who moves into 5th place after another 7th place today and Nicolas Goyard, who falls to 6th from 3rd after crashing that gybe - meaning he eventually finished 13th today.

    CB19_fl_Gonzalo_Costa_Hoevel.jpg

Gonzalo Costa Hoevel in the mix

Pierre Mortefon breaks into the overall top 10 - 7th - after a 5th place - while Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde) sits in 8th. The Dane could only manage a 20th place finish today having been stung by a weaver fish earlier in the day.

Thomas Goyard (FMX Racing / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) looked set to remain in second place in the current event rankings after finishing 10th in the second elimination, but was later disqualified for a right of way infringement with Maciek Rutkowski (FMX Racing / Challenger Sails), which means the Frenchman drops to equal 9th with Antoine Albeau, who along with Mortefon was the only other sailor to break into the top 10.

Losing their place in the top 10 are Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails / Starboard Foil), who was forced to retire after the opening lap of the final due to the German thinking he had suffered a suspected slipped disc, and defending event champion - Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne / Starboard Foil) - who drops to 15th.

Elsewhere, Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil), who was one of the sailors pushing to race, finished 3rd in Elimination 2 to climb into 12th place and is now just 2.5 points outside the top 10.

    CB19_fl_Matteo.jpg

At the time of writing the Tramontana is still howling and the forecast predicts for It to continue tomorrow morning, so we will just have to wait and see what conditions await. The sailors will meet again at 9am on Thursday for the skippers’ meeting with a first possible start at 10am (GMT+2).

  • Das war Tag 3:

The wind teased the competitors on several occasions today as the Tramontana fought with the local thermal effect for several hours. Eventually, as the temperature dropped the wind finally swung to the southeast and stabilised enough during the early evening to allow the third Foil elimination of the week to be completed in 5-13 knots.

Having been disqualified for a starboard tack infringement during yesterday’s final, Thomas Goyard (FMX Racing / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) responded in the perfect fashion by securing his first bullet of the week as he beat Kiran Badloe (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) and Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails / Phantom Foils) to top spot in Elimination 3. Goyard’s victory puts him right back in contention, as when the 4th elimination is complete, the Frenchman will be able to discard a 24th place, while his other counting result at the moment is second place, which potentially puts him in pole position for the event on current form. Goyard rises from 9th to 6th after today's performance.

    CB19_fl_THomas_crusing.jpg

    Thomas Goyard

Meanwhile, Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde), who has led the event since the opening day continues to set the pace at the top of rankings, but sees his lead at the top reduced from 5.3 points overnight to 3.3 points with Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) moving into second place after an excellent 4th place today and cutting the Frenchman's advantage.

    CB19_fl_Bontemps_fighting.jpg

    Julien Bontemps in the fight

Nicolas Goyard, who finished 3rd in Elimination 3, is only two points further back and also stands to gain a great deal from the discard as he currently counts a 13th from yesterday after dropping his gybe when in the lead. The Goyard brothers are a serious threat and both are now prominently placed to attack the top moving into the second half of the event.

    CB19_fl_Nicolas_Goyard.jpg

    Nicolas Goyard

Elsewhere, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) is just one point outside of the top 3 after another solid showing - 6th - and the Argentine remains in 4th.

Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) started the day in second place, but drops 3 places to 5th after a 12th place today, while fellow countryman - William Huppert (Fanatic / Duotone / LOKEFOIL) - falls two places to 7th after his worst result of the week so far 18th, but can obviously look to discard that moving forwards.

    CB19_fl_Alex_Cousin.jpg

    Alexandre Cousin

Another Frenchman, Antoine Questel (I-99 / S2Maui / Starboard Foil) breaks into the top 10 - 8th - after his best result this week - 9th, while defending champion - Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne / Starboard Foil) completes the top 10 after an 8th place today. Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde) falls to 9th.

    CB19_fl_Questel_chases.jpg

    Antoine Questel stalks the pack

Yesterday, Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) won his first bullet on the world tour and he built upon that performance today to secure 5th place, which sees the 25-year-old rise to 12th in the overall rankings, while he is one of the sailors who could benefit the most with the discard as he is currently counting 36.5 points from the first race.

    CB19_fl_Algret_action.jpg

    Tristan Algret in the mix

Both Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic /Duotone / LOKEFOIL) and Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde) drop out of the current top 10 after they both missed out on the winners’ final in Elimination 3. Albeau, in particular, will be kicking himself as he was leading his semifinal but was forced to tack back after failing to correctly round a buoy, which cost Albeau dearly as his missed out in 13th place with the top 12 qualifying. That result leaves Albeau needing at least two discards to have any hopes of mounting a comeback as he is also counting a 24th from the opening elimination.

The forecast for tomorrow doesn’t look particularly promising on paper, but as always anything can happen. The sailors will meet again at 9am tomorrow morning with a first possible start at 10am (GMT+2).

  • Das war Tag 4:

Day 4 of the Catalunya PWA World Cup produced the most racing of the week thus far with three more eliminations being completed in light winds - 6-13 knots. The opening race saw the fleet split in half, while the next two eliminations were run as a full fleet, but the usual suspects still prevailed. While the top sailors, so far this week. were generally still battling for top honours, each race produced a different winner, while the long courses today meant to field were well strung out.

For the first time this week there’s a different name at the top of the leader board with long time leader - Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) - being replaced by Thomas Goyard (FMX Racing / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) at the top of the event rankings. The 27-year-old secured back-to-back bullets by winning the opening race of the day, which allowed Goyard to discard a 24th place from the second elimination. Goyard started the day in 6th place, but ends it with a 11.3 point advantage over Bontemps and his brother Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails / Phantom Foils - who are tied on 22.7 points.

    CB19_fl_Goyard_victory.jpg

    Thomas Goyard celebrates

Nicolas Goyard surprisingly missed out on the opening winners’ final, but bounced back with a third before going on to win the last race of the day, which potentially brings him back into contention for the event tile as after the completion of the next race, the second discard comes into play, which means he could potentially discard a 13th place and make significant inroads to his brothers’ lead.

For a while, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) moved up into the top 3 after the reigning world champion claimed his first bullet of the season in Elimination 5. However, a 13th place in the next means the Argentine drops to 5th for now, while Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde), who started the day in second, falls two places to 4th - after a 19th and a 3rd today.

    CB19_fl_Gonzalo.jpg

    Gonzalo Costa Hoevel

Elsewhere, Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils), drops one place to 6th, while Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne / Starboard Foil) rises into 7th from 10th after recording his best result of the week - 2nd - in the opener, followed by two more top 10 finishes - 8th and 9th - as the Bonairean continues to show why he is one of the best all round windsurfers in the world.

Sebastian Kornum retains his place in the top 10 - 8th - with the Dane enjoying an excellent day after recording a 9th, 6th and a 5th from the 3 eliminations completed today.

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses / Starboard Foil) and Kiran Badloe (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) move into the top 10 with both men enjoying two excellent races (a second and a 5th for the Italian & a second and a 4th for Badloe) and one mediocre result, while both stand to gain plenty from the completion of the seventh elimination.

Tomorrow looks very promising on the latest forecast with 11 to 19 knot southwesterly winds and clear skies predicted for Saturday, which should ensure an action packed day of racing. The sailors will meet again tomorrow morning at 10am for the skippers’ meeting with a first possible start at 11am.

  • Das war Tag 5:

The promising forecast for the penultimate day of the Catalunya Costa Brava PWA World Cup materialised to provide four solid hours of racing on another beautiful, sunny afternoon in 8-14 knots of wind.

The opening race of the day saw Thomas Goyard dominate another full fleet elimination, but with the second discard in the bag, the decision was made to experiment a little with the options for Foiling.

    CB19_fl_Thomas_goyard.jpg

    Thomas Goyard in cruise control

That led to the first Foil Slalom course on the world tour being completed, which saw 16 men lining up in the semifinals with the top 8 guys advancing. The switch to the Slalom course proved to be popular with many sailors, but there were also a few displeased faces, however from a spectators points of view the switch provided more excitement with more intense and close-quarters racing.

    CB19_fl_Dorian_van_Rijsselberghe.jpg

    Quequing up at the finish

Moving forwards it looks like it would be interesting to have Foil Slalom held in lighter airs - around 14 knots and under, while switching to the upwind and downwind courses in anything above that would produce a great platform for finding the best overall Foiler. However, that is probably unlikely with regular Slalom obviously coming into play at that point - unless Foil only events were to arise.

    Men’s

    Foil

Thomas Goyard (FMX Racing / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) will head into the final day of the event with a healthy lead - 16.7 points to be exact - after claiming his third bullet of the week in Elimination 7 and then finishing 9th in the first Foil Slalom Elimination, which he currently discards. However, if the Frenchman finishes worse than 9th in the conclusion of Elimination 9 he will have to count that result, which would see his points total rise to 21.1 points. After 8 Eliminations Goyard has counting results of 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 4th and 4th.

    Thomas Goyard

Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) remains in second place on 28.7 points - and the Frenchman could find himself right back in contention for the event title if he can maintain his incredibly consistent form. After the opening 8 eliminations, Bontemps has not finished outside the top 10 once!

    CB19_fl_Crossing_paths.jpg

    Julien Bontemps

The top 3 remains unchanged from overnight with Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails / Phantom Foils) still in third place. However, the 23-year-old lost ground on the top 2 today. Goyard was level with Bontemps on 22.7 points, but he now trails Bontemps by 5 points after two 12th place finishes today. The Frenchman was in contention to win Elimination 8, but while challenging Antoine Questel (I-99 / S2Maui / Starboard Foil) for the lead at the last he dropped his last gybe!

    CB19_fl_Nicolas_Goyard.jpg

Away from the top 3, reigning world champion - Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) - climbs one place to 4th - after two top 10 finishes today and is now just 2 points behind Goyard. N, while Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) is just one point further back in 5th.

    CB19_fl_Nicolas_Goyard.jpg

    Nicolas Goyard

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) climbs three places into 6th from 9th after an 11th and a 3rd today, while the Italian is also successfully winners’ final of Elimination 9.

    CB19_fl_Gonzalo_on_form.jpg

Gonzalo Costa Hoevel and Matteo Iachino in a battle

After the latest round of racing, there are just 5.3 points separating 3rd to 7th place with Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne / Starboard Foil) currently just one point behind Iachino on 39 points. The Bonairean has been one of the most consistent sailors this week, behind Bontemps, with 7 top 10 finishes out of 8 thus far. With such a consistent set of results, Vrieswijk, stands to gain plenty from the completion of the next race - assuming he can keep up his current level of performance.

    CB19_fl_Amado.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

The top 10 is currently completed by Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils), Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde) and Kiran Badloe (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil), who after the completion of the first race today rose to 4th from 10th. At that stage, the Olympic hopeful had recorded 4 top 4 finishes - 3 seconds and a 4th - from the last 4 races to surge back into contention, but saw his comeback derailed by the switch to Slalom Foil. Badloe finished 22nd in Elimination 8 and also failed to qualify for the winners’ final of Elimination 9 with the Dutchman saying that he had too much lift to be in control in the windiest period of the day.

    Kiran Badloe crashes out!

Sebastian Koerdel (Starboard / GA Sails / Starboard Foil) and Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / LOKEFOIL) are currently 9 points outside the 10 with both sailors tied on 55 points, while the top 16 is completed by Antoine Questel, who won Elimination 8, Maciek Rutkowski, who finished second in the same race, Enrico Marotti (JP / NeilPryde) and Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde). AA started the day brightly with a 5th, but then made an uncharacteristic error, dropping his gybe at the last buoy, when comfortably qualifying in second place.

    CB19_fl_Questel_bullet.jpg

Shaka = victory for Antoine Questel

The last day of the event should see an action packed finale with an excellent forecast on offer - 13-24 knot south-southwest winds - and clear skies on offer which should see the seabreeze kick in again. The sailors will meet again at 10am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 11am (GMT+2) onwards.

  • Und Tag 6:

After several days of stable, clockwork like sea breezes in Costa Brava, the weather pattern on the final day changed a little with a sea mist and heavy cloud cover setting in during the morning, which raised some concerns about whether the thermal would kick in. Thankfully, after a couple of hours the sun burned through and the wind did arrive to allow two more Foil Slalom Eliminations to be completed in 7-14 knots.

Thomas Goyard (FMX Racing / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) started the day with a 16.7 point lead, but after the completion of Elimination 9 and 10 the Frenchman saw his lead cut to just 6.6 points with Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde), who led the event for the first three days, closing in once more.

    Thomas Goyard secures the victory

After the completion of Elimination 10 the plan was to switch back to upwind/downwind Foil, but just before the start the wind started to drop which resulted in the sailors being placed on standby. Queueing a nervous wait for Goyard over the next hour and a half. However, with the wind showing no signs of returning, Goyard was put out of his misery with the event officially being called off at 4:30pm, allowing Goyard to finally bask in his glory, having being so close in Japan.

Thomas Goyard: “Can’t beliiiiieve I just WON my first foil World Cup on the PWA World Tour ever! No words for this, thanks to everyone who made it happen, sponsors, family, friends and a big shout out to my brother - Nicolas Goyard and Alexandre Cousin, who have been incredible training partners.

I have been dreaming since I am kid to be where I am right now. It’s never easy to win and it’s one of the best feelings in the world !

Also, I truly believe I have the best and fastest equipment and I want to thanks all my sponsors once again : Phantom International, FMX Racing, Forwardwip, Baouw.Organic.Nutrition, Noerstick & Homespot Family

Now it’s time to go back on the RSX mode, I have spent an incredible month lately, had a lot fun and learned a lot, as always. Thanks for all the messages and vibes, I am fully loaded!”

Thomas Goyard on top of the world

Julien Bontemps can be extremely proud of how he sailed this week and walks away with second place, meaning the Frenchman has finished on the podium here for the last two years in a row. Bontemps was by far the most consistent sailor of the week with the 40-year-old only finishing outside the top 7 twice, while he never finished outside of the top 10 to complete an incredible set of results.

    CB19_fl_Julien_Bontemps.jpg

    Julien Bontemps

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses / Starboard Foil) started the day in 6th place, but snatched the final place on the podium after winning Elimination 9 and finishing 4th in the 10th and final race. The Italian excelled in the three Foil Slalom eliminations with results of 1st, 3rd and 4th.

    Matteo Iachino

Behind Bontemps, Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne / Starboard Foil), has been the most consistent sailor with the Bonairean only finishing outside the top 10 once - 21st. Like Iachino, Vrieswijk finished with a flurry - recording a 4th, 6th and a 3rd in the final 3 eliminations - with that 3rd involving a thrilling battle and photo finish with Iachino and the 23-year-old, who won the event last year, finishes 4th this time around.

Reigning world champion - Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) and Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails / Phantom Foils), who occupied 3rd place at the start of the day, just miss out on the podium with both sailors finishing the event on 48-7 points. Costa Hoevel finishes in 5th on count back while Goyard N. has to settle for 6th.

There is then a 12.3 point gap to their next closest rival - Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / Phantom Sail / Phantom Foil) - who takes home 7th place, while the top 10 is completed by Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde) - 8th - Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / LOKEFOIL) and Sebastian Koerdel (Starboard / GA Sails / Starboard Foil).

Elsewhere, Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde), who had been ranked as high as second at one point just misses out on the top 10 - 11th - while Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde) finishes the event in 12th after bouncing back with a second in Elimination 9, before signing off the event with a bullet in the final race.

  • Das wars:

For the first time in PWA history, the 2019 Catalunya Costa Brava PWA World Cup saw a Foil only event and overall it was a huge success with 10 Eliminations being completed by the end of the week. For 5 out of those 6 days the sailors competed in Costa Brava’s consistent seabreezes, which found the lower wind limit for Foiling, while on day two the ferocious Tramontana showed its face to test the sailors mettle and the upper wind limits, while a variety of upwind/downwind courses, combined with the introduction of Foil Slalom for the first time led to widespread mix of different winners, which kept the racing exciting throughout.

    fb23522984.jpg

Thomas Goyard celebrates as he crosses the finish line.

In fact, from the 10 Eliminations completed there were 8 different winners:

    Thomas Goyard - 3 wins

    Julien Bontemps - 1 win

    Matteo Iachino - 1 win

Gonzalo Costa Hoevel - 1 win

    Nicolas Goyard - 1 win

    Antoine Albeau - 1 win

    Antoine Questel - 1 win

    Tristan Algret - 1 win

    cafb862e13.jpg

Tristan Algret's bullet during day two's howling Tramontana was his first on the world tour

Thomas Goyard (FMX Racing / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils) had to endure a frustrating final day in the opening event of the season in Japan with the Frenchman desperately needing a discard with two bullets and a 32nd from the opening 3 eliminations. However, the wind shut down with only the final of Elimination 4 to be completed - taking away Goyard’s shot at securing his first event win on the world tour. Fast forward a few weeks to the end of the last 6 days here and the 27-year-old can say that he has successfully righten that wrong after securing his first victory in Costa Brava. Goyard inflicted the damage with his expertise in the upwind/downwind racing, which saw him win 3 eliminations to build an unassailable lead. Goyard sits in 5th place in the overall rankings after the opening two events.

    141b02f714.jpg

    Thomas Goyard

Behind him - Julien Bontemps (JP /NeilPryde) - secured back-to-back podiums in Costa Brava with the Frenchman going one place better than 2018 after claiming second this time around. Bontemps recorded an incredibly consistent set of results here - not finishing outside the top 10 once!

    15de6a0d71.jpg

    Julien Bontemps

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses / Starboard Foil) had a bit of a mixed bag of results from the upwind/downwind racing, but the 2016 Slalom PWA World Champion truly excelled with the switch to Foil Slalom with the Italian recording a bullet, a 3rd and a 4th from the 3 Foil Slalom Eliminations that were completed. Iachino’s late charge saw him claim the final place on the podium, which gives Iachino the title race lead on countback. However, there is almost no room at the top with 4 sailors currently on 19,500 points after two events - himself, Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / LOKEFOIL), Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne / Starboard Foil) and Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / Phantom Sails / Phantom Foils).

    bcfb0c2c5c.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

Besides Bontemps, Amado Vrieswijk was the next most consistent sailor with the Bonairean only finishing outside the top 10 once, which sees him finish 4th here as the 23-year-old continues his hugely impressive start to the year. After a 4th place here, Vrieswijk is now tied in second place for Foil, 12th for Slalom, while the Freestyle powerhouse currently leads the Freestyle tour as he looks for his first world title! There can’t be too many arguments against Vrieswijk being classed as the best overall windsurfer in the world at this current moment in time!

    653ab5f740.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

Reigning world champion - Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) - bounced back from a disappointing opening to the season by being back in contention for the podium here. The Argentine just missed out in the end 5th, but will be pleased to have erased the memories from Japan.

    6d5e95ab0f.jpg

    Gonzalo Costa Hoevel

Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails / Phantom Foils) started the final day in 3rd place, which if he’d managed to defend would have been enough to send the 23-year-old to the top of the overall world rankings after 2 events. In the end, Goyard N. finished 6th and is now ranked 6th in the overalls - just one place behind his brother.

    67b3d53bd1.jpg

    Nicolas Goyard

Elsewhere, Alexandre Cousin finished 7th just one point ahead of Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde) in 8th, while Pierre Mortefon, who came into the second event of the year as the world tour leader claimed 9th place, which sees him tied in second place in the overalls with Amado Vrieswijk.

    c20567afe0.jpg

    Alexandre Cousin

Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails / Starboard Foil) managed to sail through the pain barrier after suffering some issues with his back to secure the final place in the event top 10, which means the German is now ranked 7th overall.

    bad189ea83.jpg

    Sebastian Kördel

Brazil’s Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) missed out on the top 10 on countback after finishing tied on 74 points with Kördel. The top 16 is completed by Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde) - 12th - Kiran Badloe (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) - 13th - Antoine Questel (I-99 / S2Maui / Starboard Foil) - 14th - Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Starboard Foil) - 15th - and Enrico Marotti (JP / NeilPryde - 16th.

The PWA would once again like to extend their thanks to the organisers, local workers and volunteers, who have made the last 6 brilliant days possible and we look forward to returning in 2020. Congratulations to all the winners.

Where’s Next on the PWA World Tour?

After a busy month spanning the globe from Asia and Europe, it's now time for a short break and we'll be back in about 5 weeks time for the opening wave event of the year - the Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival - which runs between 12th-20th July.
