At the end of last year, we announced the intended rules for equipment limitation on the 2020 PWA foil tour. Included in those rules, was a reduction of the maximum sail size for foil racing from 10m to 9m, as part of an initiative to stimulate development of lighter wind foil sails.
After consultation with both the foil fleet, and the sailmakers involved in the tour and in the production of foil sails, and with the experience gained at the first few events of the 2019 season, foiling on the latest equipment and in the lightest winds possible, a review of the long-term equipment rules has been conducted.
Based on that review and the feedback obtained, it has been decided to rescind the rule changes previously published for 2020, and to retain a maximum sail size of 10m for foil racing during the 2020 season, the same as 2019.
It is felt that this will serve the best interests of the sport to allow racing to take place at events of the highest level, in the lightest possible winds, ensuring good event results and helping to build public, media and sponsor awareness and audiences, to bring greater profitability to the sport as a whole.
Kind regards
The PWA
