Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam 2018

  • Prepare For 10 Days of Explosive Freestyle & Frantic Racing as the PWA World Tour Heads For Sotavento

The next 10 days promise to be action packed with the men’s freestyle fleet set to explode onto the 2018 PWA World Tour of the first time this season, while the women’s freestyle world title will be decided and the men’s slalom fleet prepare for their 5th battle of the season at the 2018 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam - sponsored by René Egli - which runs from 26th July until 4th August. The opening 5 days will belong to the contortionists of the windsurfing world - before the world’s fastest sailors hit the race course again.

    Gollito Estredo

Sotavento is located on the Southeast coast of Fuerteventura and has developed a world-class reputation due to its year round sunshine, stunning golden beaches and most importantly, as its name suggests, strong winds, which create some of the most exhilarating conditions on the PWA World Tour. Fuerteventura is one of the most challenging stops on the tour for the freestylers, but it can also be one of the most rewarding when there is a swell running as it produces the perfect stunt ramps for the freestylers to launch into the latest aerial power moves, while the slalom fleet will be reaching for their smallest gear and trying to reach the end of the course unscathed.

    Freestyle

    Women’s

Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) made the perfect start to the season by remaining unbeaten in Portugal in the opening women’s freestyle event of the year,. The Aruban is now on course to win her 11th PWA Freestyle World Championship - and 15th overall, but isn’t across the line yet. The 27-year-old looks like she’s taken her sailing to another level this year and will start as favourite, but Maaike Huvermann (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) pushed Offringa further than she’d ever been before last year here - when almost forcing a Super Final.

    3a869dd833.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

So, building upon that, and especially after the opening event of the year in Portugal, both Maaike Huvermann (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Oda Johanne (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins), have shown that they are more than capable of challenging Offringa.

    ba45019549.jpg

    Maaike Huvermann

Huvermann currently sits in second place in the overall rankings, and Johanne third, but in reality there is almost nothing between them and over the next 5 days they should have more intense battles in their second and final event of the year. Whether either can get the better over Offringa remains to be seen, however.

    639cb54d7c.jpg

    Oda Johanne

Arrianne Aukes (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) sailed some excellent heats in Portugal, but couldn’t consistently produce those level of performances as she blew a bit hot and cold. Aukes finished 4th in Portugal and if she wants to break into the top 3 she will need to find a formula to perform consistently in Fuerte’s choppy waters, as the top 3 showed an extremely high level throughout the the opening clash.

    8b49f4dd62.jpg

    Arrianne Aukes

Johanna Rümenapp (I-99 / Gun Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) made her debut in Portugal and showed she has some stylish manoeuvres in her repertoire and will look to build upon her 5th place. However, it may be a step too soon to bother the top 4. The women’s freestyle fleet is completed by Austria’s Birgit Rieger (Goya Windsurfing), Germany’s Lisa Kloster (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg / Maui Ultra Fins) and Switzerland’s Eva Wyss (Starboard / Avanti).

    Men’s

It’s hard to look past 8-time PWA Freestyle World Champion - Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) - and 2-time vice-world champion - Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) for the opening freestyle event on the men’s PWA Freestyle World Tour. In the last two seasons - over 5 events - Gollito has claimed 4 victories, while Vrieswijk won the event here in 2016, while the latter has not finished outside the top 2 during that time and it would seem only a matter of time before the Bonairean gets his hands on the trophy.

    0d5bd18fae.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

The last person to win a freestyle event other than Gollito or Vrieswijk was Dieter van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails) in 2015, but the Belgian has been concentrating much more on waves recently and while he should be challenging for the top 10 and beyond, a podium place may be a step too far.

    8e4f6afe7d.jpg

    Dieter van der Eyken

Yentel Caers (JP / Point-7) is likely to be one of the other top contenders having won the single elimination here in 2016, before he was forced to retire from the double elimination last year due to injury when in 3rd place. The young Belgian also won the recent EFPT stop in Lanzarote and will be hoping to follow up with another strong showing.

    066c6d59a4.jpg

    Yentel Caers

Jacopo Testa (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360) should also be in contention having enjoyed his best season to date in 2017 - recording a 4th place and 3rd to complete the overall podium and has an explosive repertoire of moves.

    a252108fce.jpg

    Jacopo Testa

The French freestyle contingent of Sam Esteve (JP / NeilPryde), who also enjoyed his best season to date in 2017 - 5th overall last year should challenging for top honours, while Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) - 6th overall last year comes into the event on the back of a second place in Lanzarote and Antony Ruenes (Tabou / GA Sails) - 8th overall in 2017 - should all be in contention, while Nicolas Akgazciyan (I-99 / Challenger Sails / AL360 / Maui Ultra Fins) will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 2017.

    b0c5a85449.jpg

    Adrien Bosson

New Caledonia’s Antoine Albert (Goya Windsurfing) is another sailor to have broken into the overall top 10 last year - 7th - and his diversity makes him real danger, while the likes of Balz Müller (MB Board / Severne), Tonky Frans (RRD / RRD Sails), Steven van Broeckhoven (JP / Gun Sails / Shamal Sunglasses), Davy Scheffers (Tabou / GA Sails) and Youp Schmit (I-99 / Avanti) should all be battling hard for the top 10 and beyond.

    Slalom

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses) leads the 2018 title race after 4 events - recording two victories so far in South Korea and Portugal, while finishing 2nd in Japan. The only slight lapse came when just one elimination was completed in Costa Brava and the Italian had to settle for 9th place - which he currently discards. Iachino classes Fuerteventura as his favourite event, but has yet to stand on the top of the podium here. Will 2018 be his year to change that? With the current level of form he has shown so far this season he’s in with a good chance as he bids for world title No.2.

    PG18_sl_Matteo_in_the_Pack.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

However, Iachino will face an incredibly tough challenge to stop Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) from claiming another victory here with AA winning the last 4 competitions in Fuerte. The reigning world champion made a few uncharacteristic mistakes in Portugal, but eventually finished just 0.4 points behind Iachino with is killer instinct to convert finals into bullets - 4 wins from 7 races - illustrating why he has been so successful during his career - 24 world title so far - and firmly in the hunter world title No.25. Albeau is an extremely hard man to bet against here and it would be no surprise to see him make it 5 event victories in a row in Fuerte.

    846be3bfe2.jpg

    Antoine Albeau

Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / Chopper Fins) completes the overall top 3 after recording 3 third places so far and an 11th in Costa Brava. The Frenchman has been extremely consistent and he should be firmly in the thick of the action again.

    a298fa780b.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon

Meanwhile, Pascal Toselli (JP / Loftsails / Chopper Fins) sits in 4th place, but lost valuable ground on the top 3 after following up an excellent 2nd place in Costa Brava with a 7th place in Portugal. The Frenchman is still on course to equal his best overall performance, but will be hoping to better last year’s 8th place here.

    e77da9af04.jpg

    Pascal Toselli

Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) continues to gather pace this season as he has bettered his result at each event so far - 17th in Japan - 10th in South Korea - 5th in Costa Brava and 4th in Portugal. Quentel has finished 5th here for the last two seasons with his brilliant gybing helping escape from precarious situations and you can expect to see him challenging for the top again.

    07c9604d0b.jpg

    Julien Quentel

Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / Duotone) continues to enjoy his best season so far after recording 4 consecutive top 10 results, which leaves him an excellent 6th place in the overalls. However, while Vonk has clearly taken his sailing to another level it will be interesting to see if he can bring that same level of performance to Fuerteventura as his current best here came last season when he recorded a 14th place finish. Meanwhile, teammate Marco Lang (Fanatic / Duotone) will be hoping to have overcome the virus that he picked up in South Korea, which has plagues his season so far, and he’ll be hoping that he can show the form that he showed at the end of last season. If he can, the Austrian will be a player.

    c7f7dcbd9c.jpg

    Jordy Vonk

Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses) has been having a bit of a fight with his equipment this year, but even so the Brit remains in the overall top 10 - 7th - and he has a great track record here in the last few seasons - 3rd in 2015, 2nd in 2016, 3rd in 2017 - and he’ll be determined to try and continue that trend. Williams had a disastrous first half of the event in Portugal, but then battled back admirably by qualifying for 3 winners’ final out of final 4 race and if he’s found a setup that works well for him he’ll be challenging for the podium.

    Ross Williams

The top 10 is currently completed by - Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) - 8th - who is still on course to break into the overall top 10. However, he will need to bounce back from his worst result of the season in Portugal where he finished 20th. Cedric Bordes (Tabou / GA Sails) is in the overall top 10 for the first time this year after recording an excellent 6th place in Portugal and should be in contention again, while Brazil’s Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) completes the top 10.

    3cca4a402c.jpg

    Tristan Algret

There are plenty of other sailors to keep your eye on too with so many now capable of qualifying for a winners’ final. Finian Maynard (I-99), who won the event here in 2012 and has won one event already this season, Cyril Moussilmani (RRD / Severne), Maciek Rutkowski (I-99 / Challenger Sails), Malte Reuscher (Fanatic/ Duotone), Ingmar Daldorf (Tabou / GA Sails), Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) and Ben van der Steen (I-99 / Gun Sails), who recorded his best result in a couple of seasons in Portugal - 5th - and could be a real threat.

    084fb982ac.jpg

    Ben van der Steen

Elsewhere, Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) will be hoping to bounce back from 3 disappointing results in a row - 21st, 21st, 28th - which is far from the form that saw him finish 10th overall in 2017.

    d109955794.jpg

    Sebastian Kördel

19-year-old Basile Jacquin (RRD / Point-7) will also be one to watch as one of the most exciting young racers, while Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) could also feature, while Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui) will look to build upon his first top 10 of the season in Portugal.

  • A full fleet of 48 men registered for the opening male freestyle contest of the year this morning, while 11 women and 14 youth’s also signed up for the 2018 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam - sponsored by René Egli. With the trade winds in full flow, the men’s Freestyle single elimination began at 1:15pm with most sailors on 4.4m or smaller as the afternoon progressed, but conditions certainly proved tricky at times with the chop testing the world’s bests skills, however, it was the usual suspects who came out on top.

    FV18_fs_Gollito_Estredo.jpg

Action from the word go - Gollito Estredo

    Freestyle

    Men’s

At the close of play, only the top 4 sailors remain left standing in the single elimination on a day when there were very few upsets as the top seeds generally prevailed. In actual fact 4 of out last year’s top 6 make up the last 4 - Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) - 1st - Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) - 2nd - Yentel Caers (JP / Point-7) - 4th - and Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) - 6th, while 6 out of last year’s top 8 made it into the top 8 - the aforementioned 4 sailors plus Jacopo Testa (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360) - 3rd - and Antoine Albert (Goya Windsurfing) - 7th. All made the quarterfinals or better.

8-time world champion - Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo - safely navigated his way into the semifinals after making easy work of Aron Etmon (Starboard / S2Maui) in his opening heat of the day, before surviving a minor scare against Youp Schmit (I-99 / Avanti) when the Venezuelan appeared to break some equipment after landing an air chachoo, but luckily Tonky Frans (RRD / RRD Sails) was on hand to sail him a different setup. Gollito then ended the hopes of Antoine Albert as the 29-year-old asserted late on in what had been a well-contested heat.

    FV18_fs_Gollito_goiter.jpg

    Gollito Estredo

Amado Vrieswijk may have been heavily taped up at the start of the day after overstretching or tearing his stomach muscles on his first day of training here, but you would never have known that the Bonairean wasn’t at 100% based on his sailing - although at times you could clearly see he was in pain. Vrieswijk, who has finished as the vice-world champion for the last two seasons, laid down the highest scoring heat of the day against Steven Van Broeckhoven (JP / Gun Sails) in Heat 21b as he racked up 180.2 points, which must be an intimidating thought for his rivals, given that the 22-year-old isn’t 100% fit.

    FV18_fs_Amado_push_loop.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

Meanwhile, Adrien Bosson impressed throughout as the Frenchman defeated Nic Hibdige (Tabou / GA Sails) and Taty Frans (Starboard / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses) before posting the second highest scoring heat of the day - 176.5 points - against Jacopo Testa (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360) to book his place in the last 4.

    FV18_fs_Bosson_one_legged.jpg

    Adrien Bosson

Bosson will face Vrieswijk, while the final man in the top 4 is Yentel Caers, who will line up against Gollito Estredo in the battle for the final. Caers won the battle of the Belgian’s by defeating 2015 PWA Freestyle World Champion - Dieter van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails) - having already negotiated his was past Italy’s Francesco Cappuzzo (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360) and England’s Jamie Howard (JP) with a series of explosive displays. Although a direct comparison cannot be made between the scores of Caers and Gollito today, the Belgian did outscore the reigning world champion in every heat, so it could be an amazing semifinal.

    Yentel Caers

    Move of the Day

Antoine Albert sits in joint 5th alongside Jacopo Testa, Steven Van Broeckhoven and Dieter van der Eyken. The New Caledonian claimed an excellent victory against Antony Ruenes (Tabou / GA Sails) to move into the top 5 and also landed the best move of the day with an incredible, bolt upright, ankle dry air chachoo.

    FV18_fs_Antoine_Albert.jpg

    Antoine Albert

Elsewhere, Davy Scheffers (Tabou / GA Sails) performed well in his first heat, but then arrived a minute late to Heat 18b against Amado Vrieswijk and he was never in contention from then - only landing 3 moves in total, while Adrian Beholz (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg) also suffered a similar meltdown against Dieter van der Eyken - landing only 2 moves in the entire heat and both will now have to wait for the double elimination.

Corto Dumond made an impressive debut as the 17-year-old caused one of the only upsets of the day against Loick Spicker (RRD / RRD Sails).

    FV18_fs_Dumond_on_fire.jpg

    Corto Dumond

With the wind becoming gustier and the stunt ramps decreasing with the outgoing tide the decision was made to hold the men’s semifinals and finals until tomorrow. The sailors will meet again at 10am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 10:30am (GMT+1) onwards.

  • Das war Tag 2:

Day 2 of the 2018 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam saw the men’s and women’s single eliminations completed in trademark Fuerte winds as Fuerteventura proved to be Fuerte by name and Fuerte by nature, once again. Over the course of the day, there was some incredible action as the world’s best freestylers laid down an impressive mix of explosive moves. However, come the end of the single eliminations there was nothing anyone could do to prevent current world champions - Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) and Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) from claiming the top spots on the podium… for now at least.

    FV18_fs_Offringa_action.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

    Freestyle

    Women’s

Sarah-Quita Offringa survived a minor blip against Arrianne Aukes (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) in the semifinals to book her place in the final against Maaike Huvermann (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins), who required a last-second forward loop to pip Oda Johanne (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) to a place in the top two of the single elimination .

In Heat 23b, Offringa, who is usually so stylish and reliable, looked a little out of sorts on starboard tack, as she landed just 1 out of her 4 opening starboard tack attempts and for a very rare occasion the 10-time freestyle world champion failed to complete her scoresheet (missing her 4th move on starboard tack).

    FV18_fs_A_rare_crash_for_Sarah_Quita.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa goes down

However, as she so often does, Offringa then raised her game to another level in the final as the 27-year-old posted her highest scoring heat of the contest. Offringa was able to land a radical regular kono, while creating a new piece of history by landing the first spock culo in competition on the women’s world tour, which kept Maaike Huvermann at bay, and she was clearly pumped at raising the bar again, while taking a big step towards earning freestyle world title No.11.

    FV18_fs_Sarah_Quita_Offringa.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

Huvermann finishes second in the single elimination and the vice-world champion also tried to raise her level in final as she launched into an air skopu on the way out, but couldn’t land it and this time around couldn’t really threaten Offringa. Huvermann pushed the multiple-time world champion all the way last year and will hope for another shot in the double.

    FV18_fs_Ladies_Final.jpg

    Maaike Huvermann

Oda Johanne recovered from the disappointment of just missing out of the final, by securing the final place on the podium, but she will obviously be determined to try and overhaul Huvermann in the double elimination with such fine margins between the two of them, so far this season.

    FV18_fs_Oda_action.jpg

    Oda Johanne

Meanwhile, Arrianne Aukes completes the top 4 having earlier defeated Birgit Rieger (Flikka) with an assured display, but she couldn’t really impose against Johanne in the battle for 3rd and 4th place.

    FV18_fs_Aukes_shaka.jpg

    Arrianne Aukes

    Men’s

Like Offringa, Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) also raised his level when it really mattered as the Venezuelan posted his two highest scores of the single elimination against Yentel Caers (JP / Point-7) in the semifinal and in the final against Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) to come out on top as he showed his champion winning qualities again by oozing his trademark style.

    FV18_fs_Gollito_delivers.jpg

    Jose 'Gollito' Estredo

Adrien Bosson equals his best ever performance in a single elimination (also qualifying for the winners’ final in 2016 at the Austria PWA World Cup where he also faced Gollito) after performing at an incredibly high level throughout the single elimination. The Frenchman was locked in a tough battle with Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) in the semifinals, but eventually came out on top as he landed a sick air kabikuchi late on to take the victory and move into the final, where he pushed Gollito all the way. In fact the final was so close that by the end there was just 6.6 points between the two of them. Bosson will now look to hold onto second place at a minimum in order to record his best ever result on the world tour.

    FV18_fs_Bosson_action.jpg

    Adrien Bosson

Yentel Caers (JP / Point-7) couldn’t quite find enough to defeat Gollito in the semifinals but walks away from the single elimination with 3rd place after beating Amado Vrieswijk in the battle for 3rd and 4th. The Belgian has finished in the top 3 here for the last two year’s and you certainly wouldn’t bet against him climbing higher in the double elimination based on his performances so far… due to the fact that there is so little separating the current crop of top sailors.

    FV18_fs_Yentel_goes_big.jpg

    Yentel Caers

Having posted the highest scoring heat of the day yesterday - Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) - has to settle for 4th place in the single elimination - which may feel like a bitter pill to swallow. The 22-year-old couldn’t believe that he hadn’t won against Adrien Bosson, while his planing backloop against Yentel Caers in Heat 24 was adjudged to be outside the contest area and therefore didn’t count. Had that backloop have counted Vrieswijk would’ve taken 3rd place, but instead has to somewhat reluctantly settle for 4th. Vrieswijk landed a trademark double air culo - the only one of the contest - but even that wasn’t enough. The Bonairean will now have to regroup for the double elimination but realistically needs to finish no worse than 2nd in order to keep his titles hopes alive this season. Vrieswijk may now take additional time to study the current scoring system and see exactly what it takes to come out on top as he is clearly becoming quite frustrated.

    Double Elimination

The opening 3 rounds of the double elimination were also completed before the close of play and the biggest movers so far have been Philip Soltysiak (Starboard / Sailworks), Mattia Fabrizi (Patrik / I-99) and Tonky Frans (RRD / RRD Sails) with all 3 men winning their opening 3 heats. The Canadian will now face Nicolas Akgazciyan, while Fabrizi and Frans will go head-to-head.

Soltysiak defeated Niclas Nebelung (I-99 / Gun Sails) and Berk Yalgin (Tabou / GA Sails) before claiming a hard-fought battle against Taty Frans (Starboard / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses).

Meanwhile, Fabrizi looked stylish throughout and sailed with confidence to take down Loick Spicher (RRD / RRD Sails), Julian Wiemar (Starboard / Severne) and finally Antony Ruenes (Tabou / GA Sails) for the biggest upset of the day.

    FV18_ls_Mattia_Fabrizi_action.jpg

    Mattia Fabrizi

Tonky Frans sailed with his usual style and flow to defeat Deivis Paternina (I-99 / Loftsails), Nic Hibdige (Tabou / GA Sails) - who landed a tail grab air spock - and finally fellow Bonairean - Youp Schmit (I-99 / Avanti) in an incredibly close heat to conclude the day.

    FV18_fs_Tonky.jpg

The forecast predicts lighter winds tomorrow, but there should still be enough to continue the contest. The sailors will meet again at 10:30am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 11am (GMT+1) onwards.

  • No show an Tag 3:

After yesterday’s action-packed day, which saw the Men’s and Women’s Freestyle Single Eliminations completed in great conditions, the wind machine took a break on Day 3 of the 2018 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam - sponsored by René Egli - which means Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) and Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) remain at the top of the current event rankings with a couple of days to go.

Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins): “Yesterday we sailed the single elimination in really tough conditions. I was on 4.2m but completely maxed, but I managed to keep the nerves down and stay focused and I was very happy about the moves I landed in the final.”

Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone): “I’m really happy to have won the single elimination. The conditions here in Fuerteventura are amazing and the level on the tour now is so high that you can’t make any mistakes. If you do then it’s game over. Congrats to the other guys.”

  • Das war Tag 4:

Day 4 of the 2018 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam looked as though it would be a whitewash with light onshore winds to start the day. However, during the mid afternoon the wind switched back to being offshore and there were just enough gusts to sneak through a few more Youth’s heats in the later afternoon / evening to provide some entertainment.

    U17s

Lennart Neubauer (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) won the U15s to earn a chance to move into the U17s division and he successfully made it into the older age category final at just 14-years-old - where he would face Corto Dumond in the final.

    FV18_fs_Nuebauer_action.jpg

    Lennart Neubauer

The New Caledonian had shown his prowess in the double elimination of the men’s draw already - advancing two rounds by defeating Hakon Skörge and most impressively Yegor Popretinskiy (Fanatic / Duotone), but understandably struggled slightly in the light and gusty winds, which gave Neubauer a chance. The young German is certainly one to watch for the future, but although Neubauer pushed Dumond all the way in the light winds, the 16-year-old deservedly won the single elimination by way of a 2:1 decision by landing the bigger and more powerful moves when the right gust arrived.

Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails) completes the podium ahead of Stefan de Bell.

    U20s

Meanwhile, in the under 20s Euginio Marconi (I-99 / Challenger Sails) and Lucas Nebelung (I-99 / Severne).

The forecast for the final day of the Freestyle looks much better, so hopefully, the wind will properly kick in and the men’s and women’s double eliminations will be able to be completed in solid conditions. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 10am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 10:30am (GMT+1) onwards.

  • Das war es mit Freestyle:

The final day of the Freestyle at the 2018 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam didn’t provide the explosive finale we were hoping for with the wind only briefly kicking in, before dropping again, meaning there were no changes to the men’s and women’s rankings.

    FV18_ls_Champagne_moment.jpg

    The winners' crowned

    Freestyle

    Women’s

Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) extends her incredible unbeaten run on the Women’s PWA Freestyle World Tour to 11 years after winning both events this year to claim her 11th Freestyle world title. The 27-year-old continues to raise the bar for women’s freestyle, and in a year where it was thought she would face her biggest test yet to regain her world title, Offringa has more than risen to the occasion and is still undoubtedly the Queen of Freestyle.

    FV18_ls_SQ_celebrates.jpg

Sarah-Quita Offringa celebrates becoming Freestyle World Champion for the 1tth time

Maaike Huvermann (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Oda Johanne (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) have both raised their level again, but even though they threatened Offringa in Portugal, neither could really land a telling blow here to trouble the now 15 time world champion (11 Freestyle & 4 Slalom).

This season there has been almost nothing between Huvermann and Johanne, but it is Huvermann who walks away with second place to be crowned vice-world champion for the 3rd time in her career, but a coin flip could’ve almost decided that, such was the closeness of their battles.

    FV18_ls_Women_s_overall_top_three.jpg

Women's Overall Top 3 - Maaike Huvermann, Sarah-Quita Offringa & Oda Johanne (left to right)

Arrianne Aukes (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) couldn’t trouble the top 3 this time around, but the 31-year-old proved far too strong for the rest of the fleet, which sees her secure 4th place in the overall rankings ahead Johanna Rümenapp (I-99 / Gun Sails / Maui Ultra Fins), who finishes 5th in her debut season.

    Men’s

8-time Freestyle World Champion - Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) - proved himself to still be the man that everyone else has to beat as the Venezuelan once again showed that he has that killer instinct of a champion, while still oozing style left, right and centre. And with his main rival - Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) - only managing to finish 4th here you would have to think that victory here is a massive step towards Freestyle World title No.9 - especially given the fact that either Gollito or Vrieswijk have won the last 6 Freestyle events between them.

    FV18_ls_Gollito_on_top.jpg

Gollito Estredo wins the opening event of the season

Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) walks away from the opening event of the year with his best ever result on the PWA World Tour - 2nd. The Frenchman has previously finished 3rd in both Austria and Sylt, but went one time better this time around and looks incredibly dangerous.

    FV18_fs_Bosson_shaka.jpg

Adrien Bosson makes a flying start to the season

Yentel Caers (JP / Point-7) completes the podium here after producing a series of explosive displays and is firmly in the hunt for his first world title. Caers has not finished outside the top 3 here since 2016 and is now unquestionably one of the main threats on the world tour.

    FV18_fs_Yentel_no_hander.jpg

    Yentel Caers

Amado Vrieswijk will be incredibly disappointed with 4th place here as with just 2 events on this year’s freestyle tour it looks as though his wait to earn a first world title will go on for at least one more season. And although it seems only a matter of time before the 22-year-old will get his hands on the freestyle world title - the longer he has to wait, the more problematic it could become to shake the monkey off his back.

    FV18_ls_Fun_and_games.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

The top 5 is completed by Antoine Albert (Goya Windsurfing), Dieter van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails), Steven van Broeckhoven (JP / Gun Sails) and Jacopo Testa (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360). Albert and Testa both earned their best ever results last year - 7th and 3rd overall - while the two Belgian’s are former world champions who can clearly still mix it with the best in the business.

    FV18_fs_Dieter_Van_Der_Eyken.jpg

    Dieter van der Eyken

Philip Soltysiak (Starboard / Sailworks), Nicolas Akgazciyan, Balz Müller (MB Boards / Severne), Davy Scheffers (Tabou / GA Sails), Sam Esteve (JP / NeilPryde), Francesco Cappuzzo (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360), Mattia Fabrizi (Patrik / Challenger Sails) and Tonky Frans (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360) complete the overall top 10.

    FV18_fs_Sam_Esteve.jpg

    Youth’s

In the short period of wind that there was today the Under 20s finals were completed, which saw Eugenio Marco (I-99 / Challenger Sails) defeat Lucas Nebelung (I-99 / Severne) to take top honours, while the podium was completed by Kango Iketeru, who was able to defeat Illay Bamnolker in the battle for third and 4th place.

That concludes the opening half of the 2018 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam and after 5 days of Freestyle, it’s time for the Men’s Slalom fleet to dust themselves off for their 5th battle of the season. They will be registering tomorrow morning between 10-11am - before the skippers’ meeting at 12:30pm and a first possible start on 1pm (GMT+1). You can find the preview for the slalom fleet here.

  • Das war Tag 6:

After 3 light wind days, Fuerteventura returned to its normal self for the opening day of the Slalom, which allowed two and a half races to be completed in nuclear winds, which saw most of the competitors reaching for their small boards and 6.2-6.4s. However, today belongs to one man only… Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) after he destroyed the rest of the fleet to end the day with a perfect record - two bullets from the two races completed.

    FV18_sl_Victory_leap.jpg

    Antoine Albeau

    Slalom

The writing is already on the wall for the rest of the slalom fleet with Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) making a flying start to the slalom by winning both eliminations today. The 24-time world champion is a formidable force in any destination, but here it seems he is almost unbeatable, boasting an incredible record of winning every year here since 2006 - except in 2012. And even at this early stage, after such a blistering start, it’s hard to see anyone denying him a 5th consecutive event victory in Fuerteventura.

    FV18_sl_Scenic_Fuerteventura.jpg

    Antoine Albeau on the fly

Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / Chopper Fins) is Albeau’s closest rival at the close of play after also making an excellent start with a 2nd and a 3rd. The 29-year-old has earned 3 podiums from the first 4 events and looks as though he’ll be right in the thick of the action again after a promising first day. Whether he or anyone else can challenge Albeau though remains to be seen. Mortefon currently trails Albeau by 3.6 points.

    FV18_sl_Pierre_Mortefon.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon

The top two currently look quite solid with Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / Duotone) a further 5 points behind Mortefon, but the flying Dutchman, who is enjoying his best season to date, will be delighted with his start today. Up until now Vonk’s best result here is a 14th last year and he is well ahead of schedule to better that. The 25-year-old finished 7th in the opener before claiming 3rd in the second elimination.

    FV18_sl_Vonk_chases.jpg

    Jordy Vonk

Current world tour leader - Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses) - suffered a slightly disappointing day, but still finds himself in 4th place. The Italian was battling for the lead in the final of the first elimination but went down when fighting for the lead with Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui) at the second mark. Iachino made a quick recovery and still managed to secure 4th place in the opener, before he, Questel and Maciek Rutkowski (I-99 / Challenger Sails) were all disqualified for premature starts in the second final and had to settle for joint 8th. Iachino will now look to reduce Albeau’s advantage in order to not lose ground on the title race.

    FV18_sl_Matteo_Iachino.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) carved his way through the pack numerous times to qualify for the opening winners’ final where he was able to avoid Iachino and Questel to grab second place, but then surprisingly dropped his opening gybe in the semifinals. Quentel still finished 12th overall for the second elimination but missed a slight opportunity to be higher ranked.

    FV18_sl_Quentel_heads_out.jpg

    Julien Quentel

Meanwhile, Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) looked quick throughout and finishes the opening day in 6th place after a 5th and 10th, while Antoine Questel is just a point further back after two, eighth places. Cyril Moussilmani (RRD / Severne) finds himself a further 4 points back after a 6th place finish was followed up with a 14th.

    FV18_sl_Arnon_Dagan.jpg

    Arnon Dagan

One year on from suffering a potentially career-threatening injury - Ethan Westera (Tabou / GA Sails) - showed that not only has he showed a tremendous amount of character to bounce back, but that he is also sailing somewhere close to the best he ever has. The 20-year-old won the b-final in elimination one, before securing another top 16 result in the next.

    FV18_sl_Ethan_Westera.jpg

The top ten is currently completed by Italy’s Andrea Ferin (RRD / Challenger Sails / AL360), who also recorded two top 16 finishes - 13th and 14th.

    FV18_sl_Ferin_in_the_mix.jpg

    Andrea Ferin

Marco Lang (Fanatic / Duotone) must have come into Fuerteventura thinking that he was finally over the illness/virus that he has been suffering from since South Korea, but unfortunately, it would seem that everything is still not okay. The Austrian, who won the event in Sylt last year, looked blisteringly quick again, but after almost blacking out while in the lead of Heat 9, he suffered a quarterfinal exit in the first race. Things then went from bad to worse as Lang’s fin broke when leading Heat 7 and the 29-year-old cut a very frustrated figure when returning to the beach.

    FV18_sl_Marco_Lang.jpg

    Marco Lang

The forecast predicts that tomorrow will be even windier, which should almost guarantee more world-class racing. The sailors will meet again tomorrow morning at 10am for the skippers’ meeting with the action commencing from 10:30am (GMT+1) onwards.

  • Der gestrige Tag, A2 in Höchstform:

The beginning and end of Day 7 saw a bit of a funky weather pattern with plenty of cloud and even a bit of drizzle affecting the wind. However, during the middle of the day Fuerteventura was on song again with winds gusting up to 40 knots, but one man was even more on song… Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde), who ends the second day of racing with a perfect record after winning all 4 races so far.

    FV18_sl_Albeau_sets_the_pace.jpg

Antoine Albeau out on his own

    Slalom

Antoine Albeau’s record speaks for itself in Fuerteventura, but even so his start to this year’s event has been nothing short of remarkable with AA winning each of the 4 eliminations completed, so far, to blow the rest of the fleet out of the water. And on current form it’s almost impossible to see him not winning the event.

    FV18_sl_Albeau_wins_race_three.jpg

    Antoine Albeau celebrates another win

However, there are still 3 days to go in the Slalom and current world tour leader - Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses) - is now Albeau’s closest rival after the Italian bounced back from a slightly disappointing day yesterday by securing two solid second places. Iachino’s consistency has been incredible so far this season, and although he trails Albeau by 5.9 points at the close of play, AA will know that he still can’t afford any slip-ups with Iachino waiting in the wings.

    FV18_sl_Iachino_full_Power.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

In the event that things were to finish as they were right now, then Iachino would still lead the overall rankings on count-back with both he and Albeau tied on 40,400 points with one event to go in Sylt.

Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / Chopper Fins) falls one place to 3rd after another excellent day which saw the 29-year-old record two 4th places - meaning he hasn’t finished outside the top 4 in the opening 4 races, while the Big Top 3 complete the current top 3, just as they have at 3 out of the 4 events completed this season.

    FV18_sl_Mortefon.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon

Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / Duotone) is the man to slip out of the current top 3 as he lost valuable ground in the hunt for the podium, but still remains on course to smash his best performance in Fuerteventura. The flying Dutchman didn’t perform badly today with a 10th and then an 8th place finish, but a bit of bad luck cost him his chance in the second Winners’ Final.

    FV18_ls_Jordy_Vonk.jpg

    Jordy Vonk

After a quarterfinal exit in the first race - Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses) - has improved his result in every race since - 11th in the second race yesterday - while qualifying for both Winners’ Finals today and taking home a 5th and a 3rd to fly up the rankings with the discard coming into play. The Brit was outside the overall top 10 this time yesterday but is now ranked 5th - tied on 19 points with Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) - with both men just 1 point behind Vonk in 4th - but 10 points behind Mortefon.

    FV18_sl_Williams_leads_the_way.jpg

    Ross Williams

Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) will be a little bit disappointed with how the day panned out with the Israeli slipping one place to 8th. Dagan was second in the opening Winners’ Final of the day as they rounded the second buoy, but then couldn’t get away from the mark with the wind becoming lighter and eventually finished 8th. The 41-year-old discards his result from the 4th Elimination after jumping the gun in the quarterfinals.

    FV18_sl_Arnon_Dagan.jpg

Cyril Moussilmani (RRD / Severne) remains in 8th place after recovering from a quarterfinal exit in Elimination 3 with a 6th in the next.

    FV18_sl_Cyril_Moussilami.jpg

    Cyril Moussilmani

The top 10 is completed by Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui) and Finian Maynard (I-99) - with the latter breaking into the top 10 for the first time this event after being able to discard his opening result here.

    FV18_sl_Maynard_gybes.jpg

    Finian Maynard

Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / GA Sails / Chopper Fins) made it back-to-back Winners’ Finals in Elimination 3, but then suffered a quarterfinal exit to finish the day in 11th, while Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) earned a 3rd place in Elimination 3, but was then eliminated in Heat 7 alongside Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) and Bruno Martini (RRD / Point-7) after all of them jumped the gun.

    FV18_sl_Cousin_leads_the_way.jpg

Elsewhere, Taty Frans (Starboard / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses) earned his place in a first Winners’ Final since returning from injury in the last race of the day as the Bonairean continues his comeback. Frans’ 5th place finish sees him finish the day ranked 18th.

The forecast for tomorrow looks as though the wind will be lighter, but it will depend about the clouds again. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 10am with the action commencing from 11am (GMT+1).

  • Das war Tag 8:

With a think layer of cloud to start Day 8 of the Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam the wind never really kicked in and while the skies cleared during the afternoon, the racing remained on hold for the whole day, meaning the rankings are the same as they were.

    FV18_ls_Sunny_Sotevento.jpg

    Sotavento, Fuerteventura

After the first lay day during the racing, we managed to catch up with Simon the squirrel, who was kind enough to take a look at the implications of what would happen to the overall rankings if things were to stay as they are…

    FV18_ls_Nuts.jpg

Head of Analysis - Simon the Squirrel

    Title Race

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses) came into Fuerteventura with the title race lead, but with the Italian in second place behind Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) the two heavyweights would leave Fuerte tied on 40,400 points - meaning that the title race would basically come down to a straight fight between who performs better at the last event of the year in Sylt, Germany, at the end of September.

    FV18_ls_King_of_the_castle_Antoine_Albeau.jpg

    Antoine Albeau

The only time either Iachino or Albeau have finished outside the top 2 this season was in Costa Brava - where just one elimination was completed - and you’d expect to see them battling it out for the final victory of the season in order to win the ultimate prize. Iachino is hunting world title No.2, while Albeau is looking to win his 25th world crown.

    FV18_ls_Matteo_Iachino.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

Away from the title race - Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / Chopper Fins) - who is currently ranked 3rd here would consolidate his place as No.3 in the world and while it looks unlikely that anyone will be able to deny him a place on the overall podium, it is also unlikely that the Frenchman can challenge for the title, unless both Iachino and Albeau have a shocker in Sylt. Mortefon trails the top 2 by 600 points, while has a safety net of 800 points to the next closest rival, which would be Pascal Toselli (JP / Loftsails / Chopper Fins) in 4th.

    FV18_ls_Mortefon_gets_ready.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon

Behind the top 4 - Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / Duotone) would rise one place to 5th after making another bright start here. The Flying Dutchman has taken his sailing to a new level this season and is firmly on course to record his 5th top 10 results in a row, while also looking to set to earn a place in the overall top 10 for the first time in his career.

    FV18_ls_Jordy_Vonk.jpg

    Jordy Vonk

The overall top 10 would be completed by - Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti), Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses), Cyril Moussilmani (RRD / Severne), Finian Maynard (I-99) and Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) - 6th-10th - with one event to go.

The forecast for tomorrow predicts less gradient wind, but clearer skies, so that in theory should offer a better chance of the wind materialising. The skippers’ meeting will be held at 11am with the action commencing from 12pm (GMT+1) onwards.

  • Das war Tag 9:

The penultimate day of the 2018 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam - sponsored by René Egli - saw the first few heats of Elimination 5 completed in much lighter winds - 10-20 knots - before becoming too gusty and shifting direction too much to allow any further competition to be completed.

    FV18_sl_Light_wind_racing.jpg

    Light wind racing

In the opening heat Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails) claimed a clearcut victory, while 17-year-old Francesco Scagliola, Leigh Kingaby (Fanatic / Duotone) and 18-year-old Bastien Escort (RRD / KA Sail) all successfully made into the second round.

    FV18_sl_Race_action.jpg

    Nicolas Goyard

In the second heat, Leon Belanger (Goya Windsurfing / Loftsails) and Aron Etmon (Starboard / S2Maui) shot clear of the rest of the fleet, while 15-year-old Nathan Westera looked as though he was going to qualify before Damien Cervera (Starboard / Severne) decided to try and force his way into the top 4 by attempting to try and dive inside both Westera and Tristan Kivi (Patrik / Point-7), but Cervera ended up going down, while taking Westera down in the process, which worked out well for Wojtek Brzozowski (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg) and Kivi who secured the last two place in the top 4,

    FV18_sl_Leon_leads_the_way.jpg

    Leon Jamaer

Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) looked extremely quick in the lighter winds as well and he claimed a decisive victory in Heat 2 ahead of Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde), Ingmar Daldorf (Tabou / GA Sails) and Andrea Rosati (RRD / Loftsails).

    FV18_sl_First_mark_action.jpg

    Arnon Dagan

The last heat of the day proved to be Heat 5 and Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) successfully booked his spot in the quarterfinals as did Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / GA Sails / Chopper Fins), Basile Jacquin (RRD / Point-7) and Brzozowski, but Valentin Brault (Simmer / Simmer Sails) will have been disappointed to miss out after dropping his gybe at the third buoy when in 2nd place.

    FV18_sl_Koerdel_action.jpg

    Sebastian Kördel

The forecast for the final day of the contest looks slightly better than today, so that should hopefully at least the 5th Elimination completed, but in the event that only one further race can be completed - Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) would be guaranteed the victory without even sailing as he currently holds a victory as a discard.

The sailors will meet again tomorrow morning at 10am for the skippers’ meeting with the action commencing from 11am (GMT+1) onwards.

  • Das wars auf Fuerte:

The 2018 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam - sponsored René Egli - didn’t always see Fuerte producing its trademark strong winds this time around, but it still produced enough of the conditions we were hoping for with the Men’s and Women’s Freestyle Double Eliminations and the 4 Eliminations in the Men’s Slalom being completed in world class conditions.

    jpeg

    Beautiful Sotavento, Fuerteventura

Over the opening 5 days Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) and Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) came out on top in the Freestyle with Offringa extending her unbeaten record to 11 years on her way to collecting an 11th PWA Freestyle World Championship, while Gollito takes the lead in the Men’s Freestyle title race. Meanwhile, in the Slalom, Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) was untouchable as AA won all 4 eliminations completed.

Slalom Prize Giving - Matteo Iachino, Antoine Albeau & Pierre Mortefon (left to right)

    Slalom

    The Formidable Top 3

Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) extends his remarkable record in Fuerteventura - winning every year here since 2006 except 2012 - with one of his most dominant performances in recent years as the 24-time world champion won all 4 eliminations completed. You have to go back to Alacati in 2012 for the last time someone won 4 consecutive eliminations and that man was Albeau again - which perhaps shows you how great of a feat that it is to have repeated it. Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses) was the most recent sailor to have come close to doing the same when he won the opening 3 races during the 2016 Sylt PWA Grand Slam, before finishing 2nd in the 4th elimination.

    FV18_ls_Antoine_Albeau.jpg

    Antoine Albeau - 1st

Victory here sees Albeau level things up with Matteo Iachino on 40,700 points with one event to go, but the Italian still leads the title race having recorded better results in 3 out of the 5 events, but ultimately it looks like it will come down to a straight fight between the two heavyweights in the final battle of the season in Sylt, Germany, 28th September - 7th October.

Iachino, qualified for every Winners’ Final, but a bit of bad luck and one mistake on the opening day saw him have to settle for a 4th and an 8th. The 2016 world champion then bounced back with two solid seconds but couldn’t deny Albeau, but he should be happy enough leaving with a second place here given Albeau’s killer record.

    FV18_ls_Matteo_Iachino.jpg

    Matteo Iachino - 2nd

For the 4th time this season - Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / Duotone / Chopper Fins) - completes the podium to cement his place on the overall podium, in a result which means the ‘Big Top 3’ have also completed the top 3 in 4 out of the 5 events this season. The title probably looks out of the question for Mortefon this season unless Albeau and Iachino both have shockers in Sylt, but he’s been right at top of his game again over the last 5 days with a 2nd, 3rd and 2x 4th’s from 4 eliminations.

    FV18_ls_Pierre_Mortefon_Third_in_rankings.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon - 3rd

Pascal Toselli (JP / Loftsails / Chopper Fins) remains in 4th in the overall rankings but discards the result here in Fuerteventura after finishing outside the top 10 for the first time this season.

    FV18_sl_Pascal_Toselli.jpg

    Pascal Toselli

Toselli’s result here combined with Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / Duotone) recording his best ever result in Fuerte - 4th - and also his best result of the season sees the Flying Dutchman close to within 100 points of the Frenchman, while Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) is just a further 100 points back in 6th overall after also finishing 6th here.

    FV18_sl_Jordy_Vonk.jpg

    Jordy Vonk

Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses) remains 7th in the overall rankings after recording his best result of the season - 5th. The Brit recovered well from a quarterfinal exit in the first race with an 11th, 5th and then a 3rd, but the wind then ran out of steam to give him a shot of recording a 4th podium finish in a row here.

    FV18_sl_Ross_Williams.jpg

    Ross Willams

Meanwhile, Cyril Moussilmani (RRD / Severne) and Finian Maynard (I-99) move into the overall top 10 after 8th and 10th place finishes respectively, while Mateus Isaac’s (JP / NeilPryde) 12th place is enough to see the Brazilian keep his spot the overall top 10 - 10th.

    FV18_sl_Cyril_Moussilami.jpg

    Cyril Moussilmani

Elsewhere, Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) records his first top 10 finish - 7th - since the opening event of the year, while Antoine follows up his first top 10 of the season in Portugal with a 9th place here - showing the form that he showed last year, while Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / GA Sails / Chopper Fins) also earns his best result of the season - 11th.

    FV18_sl_Arnon_Dagan_01.jpg

Arnon Dagan back in the mix

Ethan Westera (Tabou / GA Sails) also deserves a mention. The 20-year-old suffered a potentially career-threatening injury here this time last year, but showed he’s back somewhere close to his best by claiming 13th place here - qualifying for the top 16 in 3 out of the 4 races completed.

    FV18_sl_Ethan_Westera_01.jpg

    Ethan Westera leading the pack

    Freestyle

Maaike Huvermann (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Oda Johanne (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) have both raised their level again, but even though they threatened Offringa in Portugal, neither could really land a telling blow here to trouble the now 15-time world champion (11 Freestyle & 4 Slalom).

This season there has been almost nothing between Huvermann and Johanne, but it is Huvermann who walks away with second place to be crowned vice-world champion for the 3rd time in her career, but a coin flip could’ve almost decided that, such was the closeness of their battles.

    FV18_ls_World_title_for_Sarah_Quita.jpg

Women's Event and Overall Top 3 - Maaike Huvermann, Sarah-Quita Offringa, Oda Johanne (left to right)

    FV18_fs_Semi_final_battle.jpg

    Arrianne Aukes

    Men’s

8-time Freestyle World Champion - Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) - proved himself to still be the man that everyone else has to beat as the Venezuelan once again showed that he has that killer instinct of a champion, while still oozing his usual style.

Yentel Caers (JP / Point-7) completes the podium here after producing a series of explosive displays and is firmly in the hunt for his first world title. Caers has not finished outside the top 3 here since 2016 and is now unquestionably one of the main threats on the world tour.

    FV18_ls_Men_s_winners.jpg

Men's Top 3 - Adrien Bosson, Gollito Estredo & Yentel Caers (left to right)

Amado Vrieswijk will be incredibly disappointed with 4th place here as with just 2 events on this year’s freestyle tour it looks as though his wait to earn a first world title will go on for at least one more season. And although it seems only a matter of time before the 22-year-old will get his hands on the freestyle world title - the longer he has to wait, the more problematic it could become to shake the monkey off his back.

    FV18_fs_Amado_in_control.jpg

The top 5 is completed by Antoine Albert (Goya Windsurfing), Dieter van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails), Steven van Broeckhoven (JP / Gun Sails) and Jacopo Testa (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360). Albert and Testa both earned their best ever results last year - 7th and 3rd overall - while the two Belgian’s are former world champions who can clearly still mix it with the best in the business.

    FV18_fs_Antoine_Albert.jpg

    Antoine Albert

Philip Soltysiak (Starboard / Sailworks), Nicolas Akgazciyan, Balz Müller (MB Boards / Severne), Davy Scheffers (Tabou / GA Sails), Sam Esteve (JP / NeilPryde), Francesco Cappuzzo (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360), Mattia Fabrizi (Patrik / Challenger Sails) and Tonky Frans (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360) complete the overall top 10.
