Catalunya PWA World Cup 2018

  • Racing Returns to Europe as Men's Slalom & Foil Fleets Head For Costa Brava

    Spain

The events continue to come thick and fast for the men’s slalom fleet and after a short break after the opening two legs in Asia, the world’s fastest sailors are preparing to battle it out again over the next 6 days for the 2018 Catalunya PWA World Cup, which takes places between the 10th-15th June.

Last year's event winner - Antoine Albeau

The picturesque town of Sant Pere Pescador is located 150km to the north-east of Barcelona and is blessed with twelve kilometres of jaw-dropping white sand beaches and the beautiful blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The Gulf-de-Roses have become a world renowned destination due to its clockwork-like sea breezes, which frequently grace Costa Brava with their presence during the summer months. However, whilst offering an astonishing backdrop, the Pyrenees Mountain’s can also transform Costa Brava into a white-knuckled assault course - when the ferocious Tramontana wind whistles down the mountain range in excess of thirty knots - ready to test the mettle of any world class sailor.

    Ones To Watch

    Slalom

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses) returned to winning ways in Japan for the first time since 2016 after the Italian recorded 2 victories from the 4 races completed, while he has yet to finish outside the top 3 in a race this year. As a result of that victory, Iachino holds the slenderest of title race leads and he’ll look to keep himself at the top of the overall rankings by claiming his first victory in Costa Brava since 2015.

    KR18_sl_Matteo_bullet.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) is currently Iachino’s closest contender, so close in fact that they are tied on 20,200 points and AA will look to reassume control of the title race by defending his event title from last year here. With Albeau and Iachino winning one event each so far it will be interesting to see who gains the upper hand or if a different name can clinch the top spot on the podium come the end of the week.

    Antoine Albeau

Frenchmen - Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails / Chopper Fins) and Pascal Toselli (JP / Loftsails / Chopper Fins) - have both made solid starts to the season, which sees them ranked 3rd and 4th respectively coming into the third event of the year and they should both be in contention again over the next 6 days. Mortefon has earned two podium finishes - 3rd in both Japan and South Korea - while Toselli has started the season with two top 6s.

    ea1ed9211c.jpeg

    Pierre Mortefon in the mix

Apart from the top 3 - Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / NorthSails) - is the only other sailor to have qualified for every winners’ final so far this season as the young flying Dutchman enjoys his best start to a season yet. The 24-year-old just missed out on a place in the overall top 10 last year and will be eager to maintain his excellent start.

    275c2d0335.jpeg

    Jordy Vonk

Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses) has been in contention for the top overall 3 for the last few seasons - 4th in 2015, 3rd in 2016 and 4th in 2017 - and the Brit has made another decent start to this campaign after finishing 7th and 8th in the opening two events. However, if he wants to be in the hunt for the overall podium again he may need to find a little more of the course of the week.

    20bb894ce5.jpeg

    Ross Williams

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) followed up an excellent 4th place in Japan with another top 16 result in South Korea - 15th - which sees Algret ranked 7th after two events. Algret has performed well here over the last couple of seasons - recording two top 10 finishes and he’ll be hoping he can do the same again as he looks to break into the overall top 10 for the first time come the end of the season.

    fe334641ac.jpeg

    Tristan Algret

Maciek Rutkowski (I-99 / Challenger Sails) comes into Costa Brava ranked 8th, but the Pole could’ve been even better off. Rutkowski was leading the final race in South Korea and looked on course to record his first bullet on the world tour, but then hit something in the water as they approached the 3rd mark. However, while that may have been disappointing the 26-year-old should be able to take away the positives as he clearly has the speed this season to mix it with the best in the world. Definitely one to keep a close eye on.

    KR18_sl_Maciek_Rutkowski.jpg

    Maciek Rutkowski

Another sailor to keep an eye on will be Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) after the Brazilian enjoyed his best event yet on the world tour - winning the foiling while also finishing 4th in the slalom and if he’s anywhere near that level again he will be right in the thick of the action again.

    131ff8b6bb.jpeg

    Mateus Isaac

The top 10 is currently completed by Israel’s Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) and Netherlands’ Ingmar Daldorf (Tabou / GA Sails), who will come into Costa Brava full of confidence after recording his first top 10 finish in South Korea.

    c2a960c790.jpeg

    Arnon Dagan

Elsewhere, Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) is just outside the top 10 for the moment, while Malte Reuscher (Fanatic / NorthSails) and Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) will all be trying to force their way into the top 10 come the end of the event.

    f9c4cf6c4c.jpeg

    Julien Quentel

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Basile Jacquin (RRD / Point-7) continues to catch the eye as one of the most exciting young talents on the tour at the moment after recording his best result yet - 11th in South Korea - and the Youth PWA Slalom World Champion will now look to continue his fine start to the year. Currently ranked 14th.

    NC17_sl_Basile_Jacquin.jpg

    Basile Jacquin

You can also expect to see Cedric Bordes (Tabou / GA Sails) battling for the top 10 again after the Frenchman disappointing result in Japan with a 7th in South Korea, while Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) and Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) will be vying for places in the top 16 again.

    Cedric Bordes

You can also expect to see Ben van der Steen (I-99 / Gun Sails), Ethan Westera (Tabou / GA Sails), Marco Lang (Fanatic / NorthSails) - who was ill in South Korea - Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui) and Taty Frans (Starboard / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses) all bounce back.

    Foiling

As previously mentioned Mateus Isaac won the foiling in South Korea after enjoying a fantastic final day to taste victory on the world tour for the first time and that performance there means the Brazilian is Gonzalo Costa Hoevel’s closest rival heading into the third battle of the year.

    6e39df87eb.jpeg

    Mateus Isaac

Costa Hoevel has been in devastating form on the foil with an emphatic victory in Japan and a second place in South Korea, which could have easily been another victory if not for the seaweed scuppering those chances, and he’s the man that everyone else has to beat.

    4da7fb26c4.jpeg

    Gonzalo Costa Hoevel

Antoine Albeau is currently 3rd after finishing 5th in South Korea. AA was actually leading the event heading into the final race, but after hitting a piece of rope he saw his event title hopes slip away on that occasion. Albeau won the foiling here last year and will be right up there again.

    CB17_fl_FRA192_0806.jpeg

    Antoine Albeau

Elsewhere, Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / GA Sails / Chopper Fins) is not far behind in 4th after finishing 5th in Japan, before earning a place on the podium in South Korea, which gives him some breathing room over Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) and Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne).

    b4e278e0a1.jpg

As the last event in South Korea showed, foiling is currently ultra competitive with 4 different winners from the 4 races complete in Ulsan and it will be interesting to see how the latest round of foiling plays out.

  • Das war der gestrige Tag 1:

The 2018 Catalunya PWA World Cup began with a glorious sunny morning as the sailors rigged and registered for the next 6 days of competition.

    CB18_ls_Morning_gold.jpg

A golden start to the day

During the early afternoon, the wind kicked in, but fluctuated greatly in strength and direction throughout - mainly between 5-17 knots - which made racing tricky at times, but even so the first two foil eliminations were completed. However, a thundery squall soon brought proceedings to an end shortly after 5pm as the unsettled weather continues.

    CB18_ls_Amado_Vrieswijk.jpg

    Foiling

In South Korea, there were 4 separate winners from the 4 eliminations completed and that trend continued today as each race was claimed by a different sailor - Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) and Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde).

Before today Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) had won foil eliminations in both New Caledonia and South Korea - where he missed out on the podium by just 0.7 of a point - but after the opening day here the Bonairean can add another location to his bullet collection as the hugely, multi-talented 22-year-old continues to establish himself in the racing world. Vrieswijk, who has finished the last two seasons as the vice-world champion in freestyle, made a perfect start, as he claimed the opening bullet of the week ahead of Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) after overtaking the German around the final mark. And then cemented his place at the top of the overnight rankings with an excellent second place in race two as he chases a first podium in racing.

    CB18_fl_Amado_takes_race_one.jpg

However, former Olympic vice-champion - Julien Bontemps - trails Vrieswijk by just one point after making an excellent start to the event himself. The 39-year-old took home 3rd place in the opener before tactically astute decisions in the second race saw him claim the lead at the beginning of the second lap and he then held his nerve to take the bullet and keep Vrieswijk firmly in his crosshairs.

    CB18_fl_Julien_Bentemps.jpg

    Julien Bontemps ready to pounce

Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) suffered a bit of a mixed bag of results in South Korea - where he finished 13th - but today looked close to back to his best as the German opened his account with a solid second place, before taking home 5th in the next race to occupy 3rd at the close of play.

    CB18_fl_Koerdel_Flying_round_the_course.jpg

    Sebastian Kördel flies into 3rd

Kördel is currently tied on 7 points with Nicolas Goyard (RRD / Point-7) - who finished 3rd in New Caledonia - after 3rd and 4th place finishes respectively.

    Nicolas Goyard

The current top 4 enjoy a 7 point cushion over their next closest rival as things stand after the top seeds coming into the third foil stop endured a slightly difficult start to the event.

Current Foil PWA World Tour Leader - Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) finds himself in 7th place after 6th and 11th place finishes, while Mateus Isaac - 2nd in the overall rankings - currently occupies 15th place, while Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) is the highest ranked of the overall top 3 in 5th after 5th and 9th place finishes. There should be plenty more racing to come in Costa Brava, which should give them all a chance to recover, but they will need to start their comebacks fairly soon if they want to make the podium.

    The top 10 is currently completed by Italy’s Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses) - 6th - Israel’s Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) - 8th - Poland’s Maciek Rutkowski (I-99 / Challenger Sails) and Great Britain’s - Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails/ Shamal Sunglasses).

The unsettled weather is expected to continue tomorrow with further showers on the forecast, while the wind is also expected to swing to the east-north-east. However, the forecast certainly offers the possibility of further foiling with moderate 10-13 knots winds predicted. The sailors will meet again tomorrow morning at 9:30am with a first possible start of 10am (GMT+2).

  • Tag 2:

Day 2 of the 2018 Catalunya PWA World Cup started in typical Costa Brava fashion with glorious sunny skies and barely a breath of wind before the thermal wind began to kick in as the morning progressed.

    Cb18_ls_Costa_Brava_morning.jpg

    Sunrise in Costa Brava

While the wind may have remained fairly light throughout the day - 5-12 knots - a further two foil eliminations were completed, which once again highlights the advantage that foiling offers in the lighter airs as conditions would’ve remained extremely marginal for slalom throughout the day and we would have been lucky to squeeze through a few heats.

    CB18_fl_Toselli_chases.jpg

    On the fly

    Foil

Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) extended his overnight lead from 1 point to 3.6 points after continuing his red-hot form, which saw the Bonairean win the first race of the day to make it two wins from the first 3 races completed. In the 4th race Vrieswijk performed well again - 3rd - but instantly discards that result meaning the 22-year-old currently holds counting results of 1st, 1st & a 2nd. Vrieswijk has shown an unbelievable level of consistency so far and deservedly holds the lead at the end of day two.

    CB18_fl_Amado_takes_race_three.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk at it again

Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) is now Vrieswijk’s closest rival after the German recorded further 2nd and 3rd place finishes today as he attempts to earn his second podium in three foil events this season. Kördel has been looking quick and using his formula background to his advantage.

    CB18_fl_Sebastian_Kordel.jpg

    Sebastian Kördel

Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails) took full advantage of the discard coming into play after finishing 24th in the third race as the Frenchman eventually came out on top of a fantastic battle between himself and Kördel as the lead changed hands several times. Victory for Goyard sees him rise one place to 3rd from the overnight rankings.

    CB18_fl_Goyard_wins_race_four.jpg

Nicolas Goyard puts himself in contention

After a terrific start yesterday, Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) seemed a little of the pace today as he had to settle for 9th and 14th place finishes, which results in the Frenchman falling two places to 4th, while current foil world tour leader - Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Choppers Fins) - remains well off the pace. The Argentinian falls from 7th to 12th at the close of play after missing out on the final of Elimination 3 before only finishing 13th in Elimination 4.

    CB18_fl_Gonzalo_CostHoevel.jpg

Gonzalo Costa Hoevel now has a long way to fight back

Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) remains in 5th place. AA challenged Vrieswijk for the victory in the third race, but then finished 9th in the next to halt his progress up the leaderboard.

    CB18_fl_Antoine_Albeau.jpg

    Mover of the Day

Fellow Frenchman - Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui) - is the day’s biggest mover after being able to discard his 26.5 point finish from Elimination 2 with 4th and 5th places today as the champion of last year’s foil exhibition showed glimpses of a return to form after disappointing results in Japan and South Korea. Questel jumps in 6th place.

The top 10 is currently completed by Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses) - 7th - while Steve Allen (Patrik / Severne) breaks into the top 10 - 8th - followed by Maciek Rutkowski (I-99 / Challenger Sails) - 9th - and Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) - 10th.

    CB18_fl_Maciek_Rutkowski.jpg

The semifinals of Elimination 5 have both been completed, but inclement weather brought proceedings to an end before a result for the final could be gained. After a short wait the sailors were released at 5pm.

The forecast for tomorrow predicts moderate to fresh northerly winds during the morning, while if the forecast is to be believed the afternoon could be a whitewash with the wind expected to turn to the southeast as the unsettled weather looks set to continue. With this in mind, the skippers’ meeting has been called for 9am with the action commencing from 9:30am (GMT+2) onwards.

  • Das war Tag 3:

Costa Brava maintained it’s 100% racing record during the 2018 Catalunya PWA World Cup as a further two and a half eliminations of foiling were completed over the duration of the afternoon as the wind fluctuated with the passing clouds.

    CB18_ls_Clouds_brewing.jpg

    Clouds Brewing

Today saw plenty of drama and at the close of play Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails) is now prominently placed to deny Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) the top spot, while last year’s foil exhibition champion - Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui) - and current world tour leader - Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) both continued to climb the rankings.

    Foil

Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails) reduced Amado Vrieswijk’s overnight lead to just 2 points after recording back-to-back bullets by winning Elimination 5 ahead of Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui), which saw the Frenchman leapfrog Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) into second place after the German finished outside the top 5 for the first time this week - 16th.

    CB18_fl_Goyard_Leads_the_way.jpg

Nicolas Goyard enjoys another fine day

Things then went from good to even better for Goyard, and from bad to worse for Vrieswijk in Elimination 6 after the Bonairean hit the engine on the start boat as the fleet crossed the start line. Vrieswijk continued to complete the course, but could only limp to a 23rd place with his foil badly damaged, while Goyard continued his excellent form by recording a solid second.

Having trailed Vrieswijk by 4.4 points overnight the twenty-two-year-old has breezed his way into contention by the end of Day 3 with both sailors now tied on 10.4 points and Vrieswijk only holds the lead on count back at the halfway stage.

    CB18_ls_Goyard_moves_into_joint_first.jpg

    All smiles for Nicolas Goyard

Then things looked as though they may go from bad to worse for Vrieswijk with the 22-year-old facing a race against time to make the opening race of Elimination 7 as he scrambled for a new foil. Thanks to a little help from some friends Vrieswijk arrived just in time and safely advanced into the final and the title race is now poised on a knife edge with Goyard also successfully into the final.

    CB18_fl_Amado_foil_action.jpg

Not the best day for Vrieswijk but he still has every chance

As previously mentioned Kördel drops one place to 3rd after a 16th place in race 5 before recovering slightly with a 6th in the next. Kördel still holds a 4 point advantage over Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui), but the Frenchman continues to make eye-catching progress after another fine day which saw him record 2nd and 4th place finishes, respectively. And if he continues in the same rich vein of form he could leapfrog Kördel into 3rd with the second discard to come into play after the completion of the Elimination 7 Final.

    Antoine Questel into 4th

Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) remains in 5th place after another hit and miss day. 14th in the opening race of the day followed by a 3rd. Meanwhile, Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) falls a further two places to 6th after finishing 6th and 11th today.

    CB18_ls_Bentemps_drops_back.jpg

    Julien Bontemps

Having dropped out of the top 10 yesterday, current world No.1 - Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) - looked back to his best today as he opened with a 3rd before storming to his first bullet of the event, which sees him rise 5 spots from 12th to 7th. The event title is probably all but gone here, but it’s certainly still not out of the question for the Argentine to come back and snatch the final place on the podium.

    CB18_fl_Gonzalo.jpg

Gonzalo Costa Hoevel returns to form

The top 10 is currently completed by Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses), who endured his worst day of the event so far - 8th - Maciek Rutkowski (I-99 / Challenger Sails) remains 9th, while Australia’s Steve Allen (Patrik / Avanti) breaks into the top 10 at the expense of Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde).

The forecast for tomorrow shows almost no wind for the morning, but it is then expected to swing back to the south/south-southwest during the afternoon and early evening, which should see more racing. It will just depend whether that results in more foiling or if it becomes windy enough for the first slalom races of the week. With this in mind, the skippers’ meeting has been called for 10:30am with the action commencing from 11am (GMT+2) onwards.

The racing continued on the penultimate day of the 2018 Catalunya PWA World Cup as both fleets headed to the water again. Racing was tricky at times with the wind fluctuations in both strength and direction making things frustrating at time. However, things work out well in the end with the opening elimination of slalom being completed during the afternoon, while after a short break two further rounds of foiling were also finished during the evening.

    CB18_sl_Finian_Gybes.jpg

    Finian Maynard sets the pace

    Slalom

When the Winners’ Final was cancelled yesterday - Finian Maynard (I-99) - held a healthy lead, but the 43-year-old clearly didn’t let that affect his mentality heading into today as he rolled back the years to smoke the rest of the fleet down the opening reach to once again lead as they rounded the first. Thankfully for Maynard, this time there were no problems getting away from the opening buoy, and while Pascal Toselli (JP / Loft Sails / Chopper Fins) and Cyril Moussilmani (RRD / Severne) threatened to close through the turns Maynard soon pulled away on the straights to claim a decisive victory, which puts him at the top of the event rankings with only one day to go. That means Maynard is in contention for an event victory for the first time since 2012 and he was rightfully delighted when he returned to the beach.

Finian Maynard - kiss of life

Toselli proved to be Maynard’s closest contender and claimed second place to earn his best result in a single race this season as the Frenchman continues his fine start to the year, while the same is also true of fellow countryman Cyril Moussilmani - who finished 3rd today as he looks to recover from 21st and 16th place finishes in Japan and South Korea.

    Pascal Toselli continues fine start

Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) is looking to break into the overall top 10 for the first time in his career this season and he did himself no harm after recording an excellent 4th place today - finishing ahead of Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti), Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / NorthSails), Malte Reuscher (Fanatic / NorthSails) and Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde), who had to slam on the brakes to avoid going over early.

Meanwhile, Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses), Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) and Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails / Chopper Fins), who missed out on the Winners’ Final for the first time this season - finished 1, 2 and 3 in the Losers’ Final.

    Foil

Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails) held the event lead at the start of the day - albeit level on 10.4 points with Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) - but at the end of the play, Vrieswijk has reassumed control of the foil event title race after a further two rounds.

In the opening round, Vrieswijk seemed to try and track Goyard as best he could with whoever gaining the better result set to lead the rankings at the end of that race. As they both headed to the upwind mark on the final lap they were virtually head-to-head behind Maciek Rutkowski (I-99 / Challenger Sails), but with the wind perhaps shifting, the lay-line became extremely tight leaving Rutkowski to desperately try and edge his way around it, but unfortunately for the Pole his foil snagged on the mark to end his chances in the race.

    CB18_fl_Vrieswijk_chases_Goyard.jpg

Vrieswijk keeps Goyard in his sights

Meanwhile, Vrieswijk seized the initiative to wrestle back control of the title race with some ferocious pumping seeing him sneak around the top mark, while his rival, Goyard dropped off the foil, to really open the door for Vrieswijk. The 22-year-old duly obliged as he returned to winning ways in Elimination 8, while Goyard had to settle for 8th place. Vrieswijk then finished 7th in the next elimination, while Goyard watched his title dreams all but end as he limped to a 23rd place. Vrieswijk has now re-established a 4.9 point advantage heading into the final day.

    Fist pump - Amado Vrieswijk

However, Vrieswijk’s closest rival is no longer Goyard, but instead Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails), who probably finishes the day with mixed emotions despite rising one place into second. The German looked to have Elimination 9 wrapped up, but veered off course en-route to the finish line, which allowed Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) to swoop from virtually out of nowhere to claim his first bullet of the week while denying Kördel a maiden victory on the world tour.

Victory in Elimination 9 sees Albeau rise to 4th at the expense of both Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) and Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui), who drop to 5th and 7th respectively, while Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) rises one place to 6th.

The top 10 is completed by Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde), Matteo Iachino and Steve Allen (Patrik / Severne).

The forecast for tomorrow looks like on paper, however as always you never know what can happen. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 10am with the action commencing from 10:30am (GMT+2).

The final day of the 2018 Catalunya PWA World Cup started in bleak fashion with overcast skies and light rain making the likelihood of racing seem unlikely. However, as the day progressed the sun started to slowly burn through the thick layer of cloud and racing was underway by 1:30pm.

    Winners' Celebrate

Foiling showed its worth again on the final day with the wind remaining between 5-12 knots, so while it wouldn’t have been possible to run any slalom, a further two eliminations of foiling were completed - meaning Costa Brava walks away with a 100% wind record for 2018.

The top boys - Amado Vrieswijk and Finian Maynard

    Slalom

Finian Maynard (I-99) endured a short, but nervous wait on the final day, but any nerves and tension were soon relieved with the slalom being officially called off during the mid afternoon - allowing Maynard to revel In a first event victory since 2012 - which is fitting in his final full season on tour.

Maynard didn’t put a foot wrong during this event, in a display that saw him win every heat he sailed to steal the headlines and roll back the years. The 43-year-old led from start to finish in the Winners’ Final to deservedly earn the taste of victory again.

Finian Maynard returns to the top

All members of the top 3 coming into Costa Brava - Matteo Iachino, Antoine Albeau and Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails / Chopper Fins) - failed to qualify for the Winners’ Final for the first time this season, but even so Iachino holds onto the title race lead after winning the B-Final ahead of Albeau and Mortefon to claim 9th place.

    CB18_sl_The_big_guns_go_head_t0_head.jpg

Matteo Iachino keeps the No.1 spot in Slalom Rankings

Albeau remains second in the overalls but is now tied on points with fellow Frenchman - Pascal Toselli (JP / Loftsails) - who records his best result of the season so far after claiming 2nd. That result sees him leapfrog Mortefon into 3rd and Toselli is now firmly in the title hunt after building upon a 5th and a 6th in Japan and South Korea.

    CB18_sl_Toselli_takes_second.jpg

Pascal Toselli confirms himself as one of the forerunners for the 2018 Men's PWA Slalom World Championship

Meanwhile, Mortefon falls one place to 4th and now trails Toselli by 400 points. Mortefon, who is normally so dependable crashed a rare gybe during the semifinals when battling for 4th place and some say that that dent in his armour may have come from trying to mix both foiling and slalom… when you take into account that the other members of the Top 3 - Iachino and Albeau - both also missed out on the top 8 there may be some merit to that speculation.

    CB18_sl_Mortefon_on_the_edge.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon

Flying Dutchman - Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / NorthSails) - remains 5th in the overall rankings and is now the only sailor left on the tour to have qualified for every Winners’ Final this season. The 25-year-old remains well on course to break into the overall top 10 for the first time.

    CB18_sl_Vonk_takes_6th.jpg

    Jordy Vonk

The same is true of Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins), who records his 2nd top 4 in 3 events to move up to 6th place in the overalls.

    Tristan Algret

Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) continues to recover from a slow start to the season in Japan - where only one elimination was completed - finishing 7th - by claiming 10th in South Korea and 5th here. A result which sees him climb 3 places to 7th in the overalls.

Meanwhile, Malte Reuscher (Fanatic / NorthSails) breaks into the current overall top 10 after qualifying for his first Winners’ Final since Denmark last year.

    Malte Reuscher

The overall top 10 is completed by Ingmar Daldorf (Tabou / GA Sails) and Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Shamal Sunglasses) heading into Portugal.

Elsewhere, with many of the top seeds faltering, 2014 vice-world champion - Cyril Moussilmani (RRD / Severne) - rediscovered somewhere close to his best form to claim a podium place for the first time since Korea 2016. Moussilmani jumps to 11th in the overalls.

    CB18_sl_Cyril.jpg

    Cyril Moussilmani returns to form

Mateus Isaac (JP / NeilPryde) backs up a career best in South Korea - 4th - with another top 10 in Costa Brava - 8th - to continue to climb the rankings. The Brazilian is now 15th after 3 events - before the aforementioned Moussilmani, Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde), Amado Vrieswijk and Maciek Rutkowski (I-99 / Challenger Sails) in the quest for the top 10.

    Foil

Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) started the event in blistering fashion as he notched up two bullets and a 2nd, 3rd and 4th from the opening 5 races to take control of the event in the early stages. However, Vrieswijk then had to endure a horrid couple of races, which saw him lose the event lead to Nicolas Goyard (Tabou / GA Sails) after damaging his foil, but the Bonairean remained cool, when perhaps could’ve collapsed, to record a further bullet and two top 3 finishes from the remaining 4 places to deservedly clinch the No.1 spot. Vrieswijk is undoubtedly one of the best overall windsurfers in the world and victory in Costa Brava sees him claim victory in a second discipline at only 22-years-old - adding to previous success in Freestyle - making him one of the hottest properties in windsurfing right now. The possibilities seem almost endless for Vrieswijk, who just missed out on the Winners’ Final in the Slalom before taking home 12th place. Vrieswijk will also take part in the waves this season. Victory here sees Vrieswijk rise to 3rd overall in the foil rankings.

    CB19_fl_Amado_takes_race_eight.jpg

A moment of defiance for Amado Vrieswijk

Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) has been using his Formula background to full effect so far this season and the German called upon past experience again over the last 6 days to claim his second foil podium in 3 events - this time finishing 2nd overall - his best result ever on the world tour. Kördel atoned for his error on Day 5 by winning the last Foil Elimination of the week to sign off in style as before now the German has never won an elimination on the world tour.

    CB18_fl_Sebastian_Koerdel.jpg

    Sebastian Kördel

Meanwhile, vice-Olympic champion - Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) - records his first podium after recovering brilliantly from a mid-event slump. The Frenchman earned also earned his first bullet in Elimination 2 before adding another in Elimination 7 - after which he never finished outside the top 5.

    Julien Bontemps

Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) rises to 2nd in the overalls after a 4th here - in a result that sees AA finish one place ahead of Nicolas Goyard, who suffered a meltdown and had to settle for 5th in the end having led the event after 7 eliminations. When leading the event the best result Goyard could record from there on was an 8th as he seemingly cracked under the pressure.

Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) retains the overall lead - despite missing out on the top two for the first time this season finishing in 6th.

The top ten in Costa Brava is completed by Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui), Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde), Steve Allen (Patrik / Severne), who showed the longer and more Formula-like courses suit him, after winning Elimination 10, and Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne / Shamal Sunglasses) - who finish 7th-10th.

That concludes an action packed 2018 Catalunya PWA World Cup, which has seen racing on every single day. The PWA would like to extend their thanks to the organisers and locals for their efforts in making this fantastic event continue as the PWA has a rich history with Costa Brava and hopes to continue it in the years going forward.

Where’s Next on the PWA World Tour?

The events continue to come thick and fast for the Men’s Slalom Fleet as they will be in action again in just a few days time - as will the Women’s Slalom and Freestyle Fleets. The next stop on the tour will see the world’s fastest sailors and the best female contortionists frantically travel to Portugal for the Viana PWA World Cup (13th-20th June).
