• I kan spik englis

I am just joking with you. Yes, English is ok. But thank you for some Russian words. I used to race bikes in Germany in 80th and won some. Nice people. Russians like Germans.

What I am trying to tell you is that frpgear.com Fly-Fin has a perfect equilibrium of forces. You do not need to extend the foil so much to the front. The weight force is not the only force on the windsurfer. FRPGear Fly-fin has it correct. See the picture of forces. It just looks like the foil needs to be on the front but you need to try it to realize that fly-fin from frpgear is well designed. I do not have any issues on my 100 liter (I think JP, do not remember, I have many of these on my property in Yalta). But on a longer board you may need to move the foot straps for 2 cm back. Just think about it. Why frpgear did not move the foil to the front while it seems so obvious to do? Even you guys are discussing a big forward extension of the wing. I am sure frpgear did the same because everybody do the same and it did not work. Perhaps, hydrodynamics of windsurfing is too complex for an average Russian or German to understand. It seems to be Americans got it right. Frpgear fly-fin I have is just beautiful in its genius simplicity. And, frpgear is offering 100% money back if you do not like it. Money back from Americans is not very common thing to have for a Russian from Crimea. If Americans offer money back if a Russian in Krim does not like American product they must be very confident in their product. I like what I have from frpgear and I will buy their new 2018 carbon design because they are offering 50% discount for returning customers. I think Donald Trump is doing well if Americans are getting so nice in business. How is it in Germany. Do you need to brake ice to windsurf?

Was immer du sagst Professor.

Meine 90kg waren so

Wolfgang

  • Perhaps I did not understand German correctly, and I would like to clarify the important points:

    1. Wolfgang and I are the only two people on this forum who actually used fin foils.

    2. Wolfgang is building is new design in order to improve his previous design. Wolfgand used his previous design for a few days. I dough fly-fin from frpgear this summer and used it in average 20hrs per week during 20 weeks = 400hrs total. Would it be correct to conclude that Wolfgang is the second most experienced in fin foiling sailor on this forum with 40hrs of experience in fin foiling?

    3. I understand we all can get a free sample from Wolfgang to try it out and compare it against free 60 day try out from FRPgear fly-fin. Can we all get a free try out from thevirus?

    4. In my 400hrs fin-foiling experience FRPGear fly-fin has delivered the best result on lower liter and narrow boards. The smallest board I used was 100 liters and about 60 cm wide. I used 5m sail most of the time and 6.5m sail some times. I am 78 kg + 5mm wet suit + neoprene safety west. I needed 10 knots wind to get on planning (gliding) with a fly-fin on 100 liter boars and 9knots on 160 liter board. The wingspan of the fly-fin I bought is 290 cm. You can check thevirus report on facebook. They report about the same results that I have with a longer board.

    5. Can anyone suggest who is already offering fin hydro foiling lessons as heimoz suggest 400 einen investieren? Just to make it understand how it works in Germany: I have 400 hrs or this specific experience on water and my instructor would have 0 experience with fin foiling on water but much of regular windsurfing experience. And, I would have to pay 400 to an experienced windsurfer to teach me, an experienced fin foiler, how to windsurf. Please forgive me for my Russian comparison but in Russia we do not pay to a balalaika expert for violin lessons.

    6. I asked a windsurfing expert to provide a suggestion and opinion. There are many of these practicing on my base in Yalta, Krim. The national coach told me that the problem for for the best windsurfers is not to ride a foiling fin but the problem is to forget how to ride the regular fin. After 20 years of practice the top athletes develop muscle memory so it makes them very difficult to accommodate for even very small changes in design. It was a big problem when the national team had to shift from windsurfing to kite boarding and now into foiling. The national coach concluded that I was the probably top fin foiling expert in the world because he has seen me practicing it every day all day long. I think Worfgang is trying to develop a fin foil that will be an easy transition for an experienced windsurfer. But if to learn sailing from the blank sheet fly-fin from frpgear or thevirus fly-fin may be just as comfortable for use as Wolfgang design. If I may suggest as a Dr. of engineering Soviet Air Force officer with 30 years aerospace design experience Wolfgang could increase the hydrodynamic efficiency of his wing with a very small design adjustment.

  • Hi bfl3942.

First off, I think it's great that you found a good alternative for low winds. The FRPGear FlyFin seems to work quite nicely for you.

Well, I'm not a fin specialist, but I think I understand where you need lift to help get the board onto the plane.

And I'm sorry, but the beforementioned FlyFin will lift the Board just under the finbox (almost a little bit more to the back, since the rake of the fin). The footstrap-plugs on every normal board are further to the front. The weight of the rider sits in front of the wing, which is a not too great a setup.

The generated lift therefore will tilt the Board in the direction of the Nose.

You can see this quite good in the videos. The Board goes quick, but does not get onto the "normal" plane. The faster it goes, the flatter it rides on the water.

Of course, if you achieve to go really fast you might just sail on the fin like a hydrofoil, but for this you need to be really fast.

To help a board onto the plane I think the fin-foil needs to lift the weighted area and for this to do, needs to sit almost under it.

TheVirus might do that a littel bit, but might be to far back as well. It will lift, in my point of view, just the area of the back foot.

So once you got your weight to the back foot, it will help the board on to the plane, keep it there and soften chop impact, but it might not really help in getting

the board onto the plane in very light winds, since the riders weight will be in front of the wing.

Wolfgangs idea puts the wing where it is needed wehn pushing the board onto the plane in light winds. It lifts the weighted area up and should help the board onto the (normal) plane.

Problem ist, the faster you go, the more lift will be produced and there will be a point, where you can't work against the extra lift....

But I think that is not so important since it's just for very low winds...

The FRPGear FlyFin of yourse has it's upside, especially for beginners and intermediates who like to go faster at low winds and stay in control.

But all above is just what I think of it after studying the HP and watching the videos....

    Cheers,

    Paul.

  • What Peejott 17 wrote,is that what i think. That what can be,is that the distance between

fin and foil is to long or to short. That is only a question of time, all other things should be okay. The spring would show us more. There the Foil is more in front, there can it be that the angle for lift is not the same or the foil should be longer. And so on. I try all that.

    Wolfgang

  • Absolutely agree with Paul. Genau!

I was actually telling the same thing. Wolfgang is offering a solution for experienced windsurfers. You do not need to learn Wolfgang foil all over again because you will feel the same what you used to do on a regular windsurfer. I have done similar design in 1979 on my home made board installing a foil on the SHVERT (the centerboard). If you may remember we used to have large centerboard earlier. Back then it looked like impossible to use the fin only without the centerboard. Now we all use fins only. If I proposed to use fin only in 70s you would probably give me the same argument about the fin to be too mach on the back. But the evolution of windsurfing seems to be in favor of placing the sailor more and more to the back of the board. Notice these cut outs on the bottom of all the new boards that make the fin to be practically outside of the board.

Wolfgang is trying to make it easy for an experienced sailor to transition to his design. But an experienced sailor does not do to sail at <15 knots. At stronger wind Wolfgang design will loos to a modern board because the design has too much of material under water. Besides, such of forward extension will probably resonate at speed - flatter. I have seen similar designs on Internet in Rusland and they say it kind of worked but feels too much drag at speed.

From what I see since the 70s the trend in sailing looks more like frpgear fly-fin and less like Wolfgang foil. For example look at the fly-fin design on 2020 America's Cup

I do not know if there is any relation between frpgear and the new America's Cup design but the resemblance is very noticeable. It seems like the future high speed yacht took foil design from frpgear.com production fly-fin. Even if you are not en expert you should think that Fly-fin design as sold by frpgear must be an advanced design hydro-dynamically and structurally.

You may question the position of Fly-Fin on the surfboard based on the thinking that it has to be positioned to make you comfortable to use it without learning it again. My opposition argument is: "How do you know if your current position and technique and your current equipment is ideal for speed?" You have spent many years to become perfect on the equipment you have. When new equipment comes to the market you feel like it is different from what you have gotten use to just by looking at the the pictures without tying it. I would take your opposite argument if you tried it and commented. But you are commenting on it without trying. I would assume that in 1980 you would give a similar negative comment if someone proposed something like Formula back in 80s.

But what I am wandering the most is the comments on my experience with the Fly-Fin by just looking at the videos of other person trying to learn windsurfing for the first time. I think we should put emotions on a side with suppression of our mistaken believe to be hydrodynamic scientists and simply look at the facts in hands.

    The facts:

    1. frpgear fly-fin current production looks like the new 2020 America's Cup fin

    2. fly-fin does faster on about 30 videos compare to the traditional windsurfer.

    3. we do not know if fly-fin goes faster at strong wind. no videos at strong wind.

    4. At strong wind anything goes fast. Why would you car if it is fly-fin or no fin at all.

    5. There is no universal solution for any wind. You change equipment for the wind conditions.

    6. You need to learn new technique when transition to foiling: large foils or fin foils.

    7. We do not know if you need to learn Wolfgang foil because it is not in production yet.

    8. We do not know if the traditional windsurfing technique is superior versus fin-foiling technique.

    9. The historical trend in windsurfing is to move all the submerged foils to the back of the board.

    10. We do not know yet who will go faster: a traditional windsurfing expert on perfectly designed traditional windsurfer or a fly-fin expert on perfectly designed fly-fin windsurfer.

    My point here is:

the windsurfing evolution may go towards to something that looks more like frpgear fly-fin. I agree with you that the boards will probably change. I think the boards will become narrower and smaller because the foil will generate the most support. The fin box will probably get to the front a little.

BTW, I noticed that my board with fly-fin turns more like the fly-fin becomes a pivot point. With a traditional fin my board turning pivot point is on the front of the fin. In other words, fly-fin moves your pivot point to the back so you have to step a little back. This may be one of the reasons why I do not feel any discomfort on standing little back.

I am not sure what video you are referring to on frpgear fly-fin youtuve posting. i would ignore 10 early videos because it seems like they have just started to learn how ti windsurf on a very large board. But the latest 20 videos look very good on the size of the board that most sailors use. I do not see any issues even at high speed videos of frpgear fly-fin. If you just provide a link and the timing on the specific video you noticed a disadvantage.

    Sorru for my English

    Suncerely yours

    Dr. Spin Out

I asked them also if it is ok for me to use 50% discount as an existing customer and pay later because I want to get Fly-Fin without using my money and I want to sale it here in Krim, Risland. And after I sale it in Krim, Rusland I will pay 50% of Fly-Fin price. FRPGear responded that such of arrangement is completely fine as long as I actually pay the 50% purchase price sometime at my convenience. I would be shocked to discover that FRPGear company is not run by a former Soviet KGB. Or it can be run by a NSA and they are just trying to influence Russian elections by so-called soft power. Take my product and pay when you like to pay! What is that? It must be an attempt to get Krim back under US control. I just need to put myself together and reject such of deal. But, no. I am not so strong to resist. I am just an average consumer. I like free things coming to me and I like to keep mu money. My decision ist: put patriotism with mother Russia aside and be pragmatic. Bigness ist business. I take the American deal.
