2017 Mercedes-Benz Sylt PWA Grand Slam

  • Freestyle and Wave World Titles on the Line, while Slalom Title Race Continues

    Germany

It’s time for the biggest event on the calendar with the Mercedes-Benz PWA Super Grand Slam taking place between the 29th It’s It's time for the biggest event on the calendar with the Mercedes-Benz PWA Super Grand Slam taking place between the 29th September - 8th October and it promises to be an enthralling 10 days with 3 world titles on the line - Men’s and Women’s Wave and Men’s Freestyle - while the Men’s Slalom title heads towards its climax in their penultimate event of the year. Meanwhile, if that’s not enough already we’ll also be bringing you the 3rd foil exhibition of the season.

Some say that variety is the spice of life and in this sense, Sylt never disappoints as you never quite know what to expect — thanks to the huge variation of conditions that this wonderful island can produce. In strong onshore winds, a colossal shore break develops — ready to crush the hopes of any unsuspecting competitors — along with powerful waves of up to three or four meters in size, which provide amazing wave sailing conditions, whilst producing a real challenge for the slalom and freestyle fleets. On the other hand, Sylt can also produce great racing and freestyle conditions, when offshore winds grace the island with their presence, although it can then be bitterly cold. One thing is for sure, to win here you need to be the complete all rounder who is willing to have their mettle tested to breaking point.

    Title Race Connotations

The 2017 Women’s PWA World Championship title race looks like it will come down to a straight fight between reigning world champion and current world tour leader - Iballa Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) - and her sister Daida Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins), who has thankfully recovered from her injury sustained in Tenerife, to compete in the last event of the year.

    fca3b30204.jpg

    Iballa Moreno

As things stand there are just 10 points between the legendary twins, so it will basically come down to who gains the better result over the next 10 days. In the event that Daida was to beat Iballa by one place then the twins would be tied on points, but Daida would win the title on tiebreak.

    34cf8ad6b0.jpg

    Daida Moreno

Mathematically speaking it is still possible for Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) to win the world title, but in reality that would seem nigh on impossible as Iballa would have to finish 6th or worse and Daida finish 4th or worse followed by Offringa winning the event.

So it looks like the Moreno twins will occupy the top two in the world for the women again, but 3rd place is still up for grabs. At the moment Offringa is leading the race to defend her place on the overall podium from last year, but Germany’s very own Lina Erpenstein (Patrik / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Poland’s Justyna Sniady (Simmer / Simmer / Mystic) are firmly in contention.

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

    Podium Connotations

Put simply, if Offringa finishes ahead of Erpenstein and Sniady then she will finish 3rd overall for 2017, but if either Erpenstein or Sniady finish ahead of Offringa then whoever gains the better result, out of the German and the Pole, will secure 3rd place.

    d46fc47dec.jpg

    Lina Erpenstein

*In the event that either Erpenstein or Sniady finish 1 place ahead of Offringa then they would finish level on points, but the top ranked girl in Sylt would win on a tiebreak decision.

However, Offringa, Erpenstein and Sniady - currently ranked 3rd-5th in the overalls - won’t necessarily just have things their own way - particularly with Steffi Wahl (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg) returning to the competition lineup for the first time in 2017. The highly talented German finished 5th overall in 2016 and finished 3rd in Tenerife last season, so she is more than capable of beating anyone on her day and putting a spanner in the works. Also in the mix will be Greta Benvenuti (Patrik / Point-7 / AL360), Nicole Bandini (Fanatic / NorthSails) and Caterina Stenta (RRD / RRD Sails / Maui Ultra Fins).

    Men’s

The home crowd will be delighted to have the opportunity to see Philip Köster (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) compete on home waters again after the 23-year-old was ruled out last year through injury. Since his return, Köster has been unstoppable with the former 3-time world champion not losing a heat thus far, which puts him in command of the title race as he looks to win a 4th world crown.

    8dbea2e4b2.jpg

    Philip Köster

    Title Race Connotations

The men’s world title race also looks as though it is now a two horse race between Köster and reigning world champion - Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / NorthSails / Shamal Sunglasses).

If Köster finishes 3rd or better then he is guaranteed the title as even if Fernandez won the event they would finish tied on 2980 points - so Köster would win on the tiebreak.

In order for Fernandez to defend his world title, the Spaniard would need to beat Köster by 3 places or more. I.e if Köster finishes 4th Fernandez must win the event. If Köster finishes 5th Fernandez must finish at least 2nd etc.

    4df817e9fe.jpg

    Victor Fernandez

However, there really isn’t much margin for error for either Köster or Fernandez with there being no discard this season. That means that former world champion Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing) still has an outside shot, but he would need to win the event and then see Köster finish 9th or worse as well as Fernandez finishing 5th or worse in the single or 7th or worse in the double, while fellow former world champion Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) has an even slimmer outside shot, but we will look at that if and when that situation occurs.

    e7a9883be5.jpg

    Marcilio Browne

Browne is currently on course to defend his place on the prestigious overall podium, but he’ll face stern competition from Traversa, who is just 10 points behind, which means that just one place separates the two sailors.

    776934c8b8.jpg

    Thomas Traversa

Meanwhile, Adam Lewis (Fanatic / NorthSails / SWOX) and Alex Mussolini (RRD / RRD Sails) are not out of the podium picture either, particularly with Mussolini winning the event here last year, while Lewis is enjoying his best season to date on the world tour.

    877052d14a.jpg

    Alex Mussolini

Of course the usual suspects of Ricardo Campello (Point-7), Dany Bruch (Starboard / Flight Sails / AL360 / Shamal Sunglasses), Jaeger Stone (Starboard / Severne / SWOX / Shamal Sunglasses), Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / Mystic / SWOX) and Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic / NorthSails) and Marc Paré (Simmer / Simmer Sails) will all be trying to end the season on a high, while the local crowd will also be hoping for a solid showing from home talents Klaas Voget (Fanatic / NorthSails) and Leon Jamaer (JP / NeilPryde).

    Jaeger Stone

    Freestyle

The Men’s Freestyle World Champion will also be decided in Sylt over the next 10 days and you’d have to feel that it’ll either be the King of Freestyle - Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / NorthSails) adding to his tally of 7 world titles or Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) capturing his first world title given that they are No.1 and 2 in the current rankings - and the fact that one of them has won each event completed since 2016.

    cf2a798d9c.jpg

    Gollito Estredo

It’s Gollito who holds the narrow advantage coming into Sylt having won in Fuerteventura in July, but Vrieswijk will be hoping to exact revenge against his good friend and rival for a painful loss here in 2016, which saw the 21-year-old miss out on his first world title after Gollito staged a storming comeback on the final day to the pip Vrieswijk to the world crown and there could be another mouthwatering battle on our hands. In the event that one double elimination was to be completed and Vrieswijk was to win it with Gollito finishing 2nd then the two sailors would be tied points - meaning if there is enough time and suitable conditions that a sail off for the world title could be held.

    44a73d565f.jpg

    Amado Vrieswijk

Yentel Caers (JP / Point-7) has recovered from his injury in Fuerteventura and the Belgian comes into Sylt in 3rd place, while also still having a shot at a first world title. In order to do so though it is likely that Caers would need to win his first world tour event, while having Gollito finish 3rd or worse and Vrieswijk 2nd or worse - but we will bring you full details of how that would work out as the competition unfolds.

    066c6d59a4.jpg

    Yentel Caers

Elsewhere, Italy’s Jacopo Testa (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360) comes into Sylt on the back of his best result ever on the world tour - 4th - and he too has outside title hopes, while being Caers’ closest rival for the final spot on the overall podium.

    0e08f30e67.jpg

    Jacopo Testa

With there being no discard things could change massively with no room for error for any sailor, but you can expect to see former world champions Steven Van Broeckhoven (JP / NeilPryde) and Dieter van der Eyken (Starboard / Severne) pushing for the top together with Frenchmen Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / NorthSails / Maui Ultra Fins) - who finished 3rd here in 2016 - and Antony Ruenes (Tabou / GA Sails).

    43eb184a9f.jpg

    Dieter van der Eyken

As Fuerteventura showcased, the level on the freestyle world tour is absolutely insane at the moment and there really are no easy heats anymore, but you can also expect to see the likes of Bonaire contingent Tonky Frans (RRD / RRD Sails), Kiri Thode and Youp Schmit (99NoveNove / Avanti) plus Sam Esteve (JP / NeilPryde), Balz Müller (Patrik / Severne) all in the mix, while none of the regular freestylers will be wanting to face Thomas Traversa or former 3-time freestyle world champion - Ricardo Campello - who both line up.

    Slalom

Antoine Albeau (RRD / RRD Sails) will be full of confidence coming into the 6th slalom event of the year with the 23-time world champion currently sitting pretty at the top of the rankings after winning the last 3 world cup events. Another victory here would guarantee Albeau the world title with an event to spare, but AA will be firmly focused on the task at hand.

    dedf064b83.jpg

    Antoine Albeau

Reining world champion - Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Point-7 / Shamal Sunglasses) - is currently Albeau’s closest rival, but with 40 points currently between them, the Italian will know that is imperative for him to gain his first win of the season here in Sylt in order to keep the pressure on Albeau. Anything better than a 6th place here will allow him to discard his result from Japan and last year Iachino was in irresistible form in Sylt as he dominated with 3 bullets and a second place from the 4 eliminations completed. If he can find anything close to that level of form then he’s in with a great shout.

    f95bbb0918.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails / Chopper Fins) is currently tied on points with Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Mystic / Shamal Sunglasses) for the battle to complete the overall top 3 and at the moment you would have to say Williams has the momentum after securing consecutive top 3 finishes in Fuerte and then most recently in Denmark. Meanwhile, Mortefon will be doing everything in his power to earn his first podium since Costa Brava in May.

    158b98f2e4.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon

After a blip in Costa Brava, Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti), seems to have regained his form and he’s well positioned in 5th place and he has a clear advantage - 80 points - over Pascal Toselli (99NoveNove / Challenger Sails / Chopper Fins), who has recovered well since a disappointing result in the opening event of the year.

    1100cd0767.jpg

    Julien Quentel

The top 10 is currently completed by Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui), Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Mystic / Chopper Fins), Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) and Cyril Moussilmani (99NoveNove / Severne), but they have the likes of Marco Lang (Fanatic / NorthSails), Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) and Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / NorthSails), while Arnon Dagan could potentially be one of the biggest movers over the next 10 days as he is currently counting a 25th place.

    7fec306f50.jpg

    Tristan Algret

Elsewhere, you can expect to see Maciek Rutkowski (Tabou / GA Sails) and Enrico Marotti (RRD / NeilPryde) try to continue their momentum after recording their best PWA results in Denmark.

    Foiling

If that isn’t enough then we’ll also be bringing the next installment of exhibition foiling, which will see 32 men battling it out in windsurfing’s newest discipline. So far this season Antoine Questel and Antoine Albeau have recorded one victory each - will one of the Antoine’s strike again or will there be a third different winner in as many exhibitions?

The latest forecast keeps changing on almost every new model run, but it does look like they’ll be plenty of wind - with the potential for waves on Monday-Wednesday. One things for sure though there won’t be a lack of action with all wind conditions covered and with 3 world titles on the line there’s guaranteed to be plenty of drama. • All Rigged and Ready to For Action

    Germany

The opening day of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam saw a total of 148 sailors from 32 countries registering for the next 10 days of competition which will see the Men’s and Women’s Wave, Men’s Freestyle, Men’s Slalom and Men’s Foil fleets in action.

    SY17_ls_Rigging_Time.jpg

    Rigging up

Most of the day was spent registering or preparing equipment before the official opening ceremony was held at 4pm. The forecast for tomorrow looks light, but then it is looking extremely windy until the end of the week, so we should have plenty of radical action over the coming days.

    SY17_ls_Sailors_on_stage.jpg

    Opening Ceremony

Earlier the day we briefly caught up with reigning world champion Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Point-7 / Shamal Sunglasses), who has won for the last two years in Sylt and is in contention for the world title again with two events to go, the Italian said: “I’m feeling great coming into the event, so now we just have to wait and see how it goes, but the forecast looks good. I feel even better setup for the light and medium winds now than before which is important here as they usually sail the waves or freestyle in the stronger winds."

    SY17_ls_Matteo_Iachino.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

Meanwhile, current vice-world champion and world No.2 in Freestyle - Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) is reportedly a little under the weather and is doing everything he can to be fully fit for Sunday, which currently looks like a possible Freestyle day, but the Bonairean seemed to think that he’ll be fine to sail and he still has another 24 hours to recover before he potentially gets ready to battle for his first freestyle world title.

Fellow freestyler Yentel Caers (JP / Point-7), who injured himself in Fuerteventura is almost back to 100% and ready to compete again as he potentially battles for the world title and the overall podium tomorrow.

With tomorrow looking like it could be another relatively calm day, so we’ll be bringing you a title race update from the legendary Moreno twins with Iballa (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Daida (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) set to go head-to-head for the 2017 Women’s PWA Wave World Championship.

  • Das war Tag 2:

Day two of the Mercedes-Benz Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam saw the men’s foil fleet in action for the first time with light offshore winds around 4-9 knots for much of the day. By the end of the day two foil races were completed so as things stand Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) and Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde) are currently tied for first place on 5 points.

    SY17_sl_The_foilers_hit_the_line.jpg

    Follow the leader

Alexandre Cousin (Patrik / GA Sails / Chopper Fins) won the first elimination, but the Frenchman went from hero to zero after being disqualified from the second race in the semifinals after a premature start.

    SY17_sl_Cousin_leads_the_way.jpg

    Alexandre Cousin

Meanwhile, Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / NorthSails) held on to a tight victory in the second elimination as he just held off storming comebacks from Quentel and Kornum. Vonk’s victory lifts the Dutchman into 3rd place in the current rankings ahead of former Olympic vice-world champion Julien Bontemps (JP / NeilPryde) and Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins), who completes the top 5.

    SY17_ls_Jordy_takes_race_two.jpg

Jordy Vonk happy with his bullet

With the Moreno twins set to battle it out for the top places on the podium again over the coming days we caught up with Daida (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Iballa (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) to find out how they are feeling about their title race showdown as they prepare to compete in Sylt again 20 years after their first appearance here.

    SY17_ls_5000_sponsorship_up_for_grabs.jpg

    Iballa and Daida Moreno

PWA: How are you both feeling about the title race?

Iballa: It's always exciting to be here in Sylt as it’s such a big event! For the Title race, I only think about taking the two slots on the podium…I don’t care either way. I’m happy to share with Daida those two spots if possible for one more year….But you never know in Sylt!! The conditions are changing all the time and there is a lot of “incertitude”. But I guess its part of the way. So… we just have to wait and see what the conditions do here in Sylt and we try to make the best of it that we can in the water!

Daida: I actually try not to think about it and just go with the flow. I don’t have many good memories of Sylt from the last 20 years, as I only won here in 2003 and 2008. It’s a bit of a lottery here and you need to be lucky that’s all. Things always happen for a reason, so I will try my best and if conditions allow, try to enjoy my windsurfing, even though I haven’t sailed at all after Tenerife.

PWA: Daida, obviously you were injured in Tenerife, which ruled you out of the rest of the event but you still finished 3rd there - how disappointing was that for you and how is the injury now?

Daida: I was feeling pretty strong, I had trained hard physically all last winter and spring and was starting to pull some new moves. Three weeks before Tenerife I cut my foot with the fin and had 8 stitches which didn’t allow me to go sailing between Gran Canaria and Tenerife. After I had my stitches removed I tried to go sailing and after 30 seconds the cut was wide open again and needed to have three more stitches. So I went to Tenerife with three stitches in my foot and three weeks without windsurfing. I also had all the stress of the post event organisation in GC, lots of paper work and so I lost my physical form. Once in Tenerife, we sailed in really strong wind and I went out, landed a pretty high backloop a bit short, so I tried to pull out of it and my rib cracked, breaking also some muscular tissue and spraining ligaments. I have been out of the water now for 7-8 weeks, so once again so far it looks like everything is happening for me not to win the world title. At the moment I stand in second place, after my sister, which is an honour after all the bad luck I had this summer. Who knows when I will win a world title again, last time was back in 2013. I still feel that I am a lucky woman who can compete, and be alive after all I have been through.

PWA: Iballa, you lead the world rankings after winning in Tenerife - what have you been up to since then?

Iballa: “I’ve been traveling a lot: North Spain, Denmark, Fuerteventura and Tarifa (south of Spain). I was focusing on SUP Training as I had the ISA Worlds in Denmark where I finished 7th with best SUP Surfers around the globe. I wanted to record a better result but competitions are, like I said before, part of the game! Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But I had a great season with SUP - becoming Spanish and European SUP Champion. Now I’m focusing on the last stop of the windsurfing tour. I’m happy I can compete in two sports at a high level (SUP and Windsurfing). Windsurfing is still my No.1 sport. Next year more!

PWA: It looks as though the Moreno twins are on course to win their 27th world title - what does that mean to you both and did you ever imagine winning that many titles between you when you first started competing?

Iballa: It’s still up in the air as this result is very important and anything can still happen, but if we win the 27th it will be amazing. Our first year in Sylt was in 1997, so we are celebrating our 20th anniversary at this event (even though we missed one of two editions due to injuries). For sure it will be a dream come true to be up on the podium again.

Daida: That’s always our main goal - to finish first and second, either way. There are other girls sailing good like Lina [Erpenstein], Justyna [Sniady] and Sarah-Quita [Offringa]. We will see what Sylt brings us. I always believe the most important thing it’s to try your best in this type of conditions and hope for a good result. Maths will do the rest.

The first time we came to Sylt was back in 1997, so it is our 20th anniversary now, and I could never imagine myself winning up to 48 PWA events so far in my life and have 18 world titles. This is something you can never imagine, and it’s always thanks to the sponsors who support you during your career path, to the proof or work, training, which allows you to invest your time and money in windsurfing.

Do you still get nervous before competing?

Iballa: I wouldn’t say nervous but as there is so much “uncertainty” because of the conditions, judging etc and depending what you can do in those 15 minutes decides your chances, so there’s always a lot of factors. But I try to centre my attention on the heat and perform the best I can be in the conditions we have.

Daida: I don’t think many people like to sail in ice cold water and rain with death onshore winds.. more than nervous I think it’s a bit stressful with the uncertainty of what could happen heat after heat.

PWA: Obviously it’s great that you will probably add another world title to your Moreno twins tally, but both of you must want to win the title - how would you describe the rivalry between yourselves?

Iballa: As I said before I’m happy either way with 1st or 2nd. The most important thing is that we are both there and add title No.27 if possible.

Daida: We are different people, so obviously we would both like to win the world title. Iballa has been winning the wave title for the last 3 years in a row, and she is really motivated and fit thanks to the SUP discipline, she will always be the hardest woman to beat. We are a team though and either way we are happy if we always get the top 1 and 2 places on the podium. We do not have incentives or anything, just our own motivation to continue learning, training and having fun. Thanks for the interview.

PWA: Thanks, Daida & Iballa - all the best for the contest.

  • Das war Tag 3:

Clear sunny skies and light to moderate winds - 7-17 knots - provided an entertaining day of racing on day 3 of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam as the first two eliminations of the week were completed. Marco Lang (Fanatic / NorthSails) stole the show today by winning both eliminations in front of a packed out back in emphatic style to deservedly head up the rankings, while the two title contenders - Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) and Matteo iachino (Starboard / Point-7 / Shamal Sunglasses) - endured a topsy-turvy day after a drama filled afternoon.

    SY17_ls_Two_out_of_two_for_Lang.jpg

    Marco Langs celebrates

    Slalom

Marco Lang had never won an elimination before today, but that all changed with the Austrian enjoying a purple patch of form as he claimed two highly impressive victories in both races completed. On both occasions, Lang led from start to finish with his blistering speed leaving his rivals in his wake. The 31-year-old was understandably delighted after enjoying the finest day of his career so far and he deservedly holds a commanding lead at the top of the event rankings at the close of play. Lang was in fantastic form, but did have one heart in mouth moment in the second semifinal when he gybed into the buoy at the last mark when in the lead, but fortunately he still qualified for the winners’ final and cut a relieved figure on the beach afterwards - before that relief was soon replaced with pure joy with bullet number 2 in the bag.

Germany’s Vincent Langer (Fanatic / NorthSails), who is competing in his first event of the season, also enjoyed a fine day after 2nd and 4th place finishes. Langer’s starts were on point throughout the day which left him prominently placed in every heat he raced in and he occupies 2nd place in the current rankings but trails Lang by 4.6 points.

With Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails / Chopper Fins) suffering a shock quarterfinal exit in the opening elimination, Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Mystic / Shamal Sunglasses) now holds the upper hand in the race for the final place on the overall podium. Coming into the event the two sailors were level on points, but with Williams enjoying a fine day which sees him currently ranked 3rd he would move into a clear 3rd place. After a disappointing first race, Mortefon then bounced back in Elimination 2 with a 2nd place - pipping Williams on the line in a photo finish, but the current vice-world champion sits in 14th place after today and will be hoping there is enough racing to discard the result from the first race.

Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) came into Sylt looking to discard a 25th place and the Israeli is on course to do just that after a solid display today which saw him qualify for both winners’ finals before finishing 6th and 7th, which leaves him in 4th place. If Dagan can hold on to his current position then he will leapfrog in the overall top 10 at the end of the event.

Title contenders Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) and Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Point-7 / Shamal Sunglasses) both suffered days they’d rather forget. Both sailors did well in the first race - finishing 5th and 3rd respectively, but then things began to unravel. Firstly, Iachino was knocked out in the quarterfinals after breaking a mast when in the qualifying places, which could’ve almost decided the title race right here and now with the pendulum swinging even further in Albeau’s favour.

    SY17_sl_Iachino_leads_the_way.jpg

However, just two heats later Albeau suffered the same fate as the 23-time world champion went from first to last after rounding the opening mark in the light winds and much to Albeau’s disgust the cancellation flag never came and despite his protests the decision was upheld meaning Iachino’s equipment misfortune was not punished, while leaving the title race open. At the close of play, Albeau sits in 10th place, while Iachino is 16th. Both would instantly discard the result, but both will be hoping to complete at least 4 eliminations so that they can try and climb the rankings here.

France’s Pascal Toselli (99Novenove / LoftSails / Chopper Fins) currently occupies 5th place after finishing 6th and 11th and he holds a two-point advantage over Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / NorthSails) and Cedric Bordes (Tabou / GA Sails), who both have 19 points.

The top 10 is currently completed by Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) and Croatia’s Enrico Marotti (JP / NeilPryde).

Elsewhere Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Mystic / Chopper Fins) was disqualified from the second elimination for unsporting behaviour after an altercation with Maciek Rutkowski (Tabou / GA Sails).

The wind is expected to crank up to 30 knots tomorrow which should see either the freestyle or wave fleets hit the water for the first time this event with waves of up to 2.6m - increasing to 3m by the evening currently forecast. With a solid day of wind ahead tomorrow promises to see plenty of radical action and the skippers’ meeting has been called for 8am for both the freestyle and wave fleets - with a first possible start at 8:30am. Meanwhile, the slalom skippers’ meeting shall be held at 10am - with a first possible start at 10:30am (GMT+2).

After a stop-start morning in which the wind was up and down with the bands of rain things eventually settled down to provide a full afternoon and evening of wave competition as the Baltic Sea produced some hollow, bowly and ultimately unforgiving nuggets, which had the power and heaviness to destroy equipment. At the end of a very long day of competition Iballa Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) is firmly on course to win her 4th consecutive PWA World Wave Championship title after winning the single elimination, while the majority of the top seeds in the men’s fleet survived the opening one and half rounds of the single elimination unscathed.

Iballa Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) is one step closer to the 2017 Women’s PWA Wave World Champion after claiming a hard fought victory in the single elimination over Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) in tricky conditions. The final was an excellent contest and by the end there was just over half a point in it. Offringa actually posted the highest single wave score of the final - 7.87 points - but Iballa was able to score a more complete backup wave - 5.25 points - to add to her 7.13 point opening wave which saw Iballa show excellent flow and style with 3 turns. In order for Iballa to be denied the world title, Daida Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins), would need to come back and win the double elimination,

    SY17_wv_Iballa.jpg

    Iballa Moreno

Meanwhile, Offringa has almost secured her place on the overall podium with 2nd place the single elimination. The Aruban firstly saw off a potentially very tricky second round tie against Steffi Wahl (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg) before claiming an impressive victory against Daida Moreno in the semifinals. Either, Lina Erpenstein (Patrik / Severne) or Justyna Sniady (Simmer / Simmer Sails) would now have to defeat Daida Moreno and then defeat Offringa to deny her 3rd place in the world for 2017.

    SY17_wv_Sarah_Quita_on_form.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

Daida Moreno, who is still not 100% fit after injuring her ribs in Tenerife, finishes 3rd in the single elimination after she was able to defeat Lina Erpenstein in the battle for 3rd and 4th. Daida still has the possibility of winning the world title this season, but would need to mount a strong comeback in the double elimination and defeat her sister - Iballa - twice.

    SY17_wv_Daida_hits_the_lip.jpg

    Men’s

The majority of the top seeds are safely through to the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the single elimination after the opening one and half rounds were completed after the completion of the women’s single elimination.

Philip Köster (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) has made a safe start in his pursuit of winning a 4th world title after the German defeated Marc Paré and Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / Mystic / SWOX) much to the delight of the home crowd. Köster will now face current world No.4 Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) who sailed well in both heats - firstly defeating Markus Rydberg (Simmer / Simmer Sails) - who qualified through the Qualification Round before dispatching of Kenneth Danielsen (Simmer / Simmer), who had earlier performed a buzzer beater against Jules Denel (JP / NeilPryde) with two takas on his final wave, with his consistently landed late hits off of heavy sections proving too much.

    SY17_wv_Koester_tweaked.jpg

    Philip Köster

Adam Lewis (Fanatic / NorthSails / SWOX) and Dany Bruch (Starboard / Flight Sails / AL360 / Shamal Sunglasses) ended the hopes of Omar Sanchez (Carbon Art / KA Sail / Aeron) and Pablo Ramirez (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg / Aeron) in the opening round before being involved in the closest heat of the day in round two against each other. In the end, there was just 0.05 of a point between the two of them, but crucially the result went in Lewis’ favour, which means the Brit remains on course to record his best ever result in the overall rankings with the 29-year-old guaranteed at least 5th place in the single elimination. For Bruch, the defeat was a hard one for him to swallow with another close heat going against him.

    SY17_wv_Adam_Lewis_back_loop.jpg

    Adam Lewis

Lewis will now face reigning world champion and teammate Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / NorthSails / Shamal Sunglasses) in the next round with the Spaniard looking his usual polished self. Unfortunately his opponent in Heat 10b - Dieter van der Eyken (Starboard / Severne) - has been forced to withdraw from the event after injuring himself after attempting to land a massive backloop. Dieter said: “Nothing broken and it sounds very similar injury as Yentel [Caers] probably. Bit bummed I didn't land that backloop, but s**t happens at least nothing is broken. Now I'll have to have a further checkup at home with an MRI scan.” Everyone from the PWA wishes Dieter a speedy recovery.

    SY17_wv_Dieter_Goes_big.jpg

    Dieter van der Eyken

Ricardo Campello (Point-7) also injured his ankle today landing a one-footed backloop in the warmup, but he sailed through the pain to defeat Graham Ezzy (Tabou / Ezzy) - who accumulated solid wave scores - including a radical forward off the lip - but was lacking a jump score. Campello will now face Jaeger Stone (Starboard / Severne / SWOX / Shamal Sunglasses) after the Australian successfully defeated former two-time wave world champion Josh Angulo (Angulo / S2Maui).

    SY17_wv_Campello_hits_the_lip.jpg

    Ricardo Campello

7-time PWA Freestyle World Champion - Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / NorthSails) - produced an incredible performance to win the Qualification round as he posted a heat score of 25 points and there’s no doubt that Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing) won’t have been too happy about facing him in the first round. However, the Venezuelan couldn’t quite reproduce that same level of performance in Heat 6b with the wind being changeable throughout. Browne produced a professional display to deservedly advanced and he’ll be happy to have passed a potentially very tricky heat. He will now face either Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic / NorthSails) or Josep Pons (Simmer / Simmer Sails).

    SY17_wv_Estredo_double_loop.jpg

    Jose 'Gollito' Estredo

Elsewhere, Aleix Sanllehy (Tabou / GA Sails) and Klaas Voget (Fanatic / NorthSails) successfully navigated their way into the second round, while Moritz Mauch (Severne / Severne Sails) produced a moment of magic against Leon Jamaer (JP / NeilPryde) to earn the only 10 point score of the day with a monstrous air frontside 360 and he will now face the defending event champion - Alex Mussolini (RRD / RRD Sails) - who comfortably dispatched of Adrian Beholz (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg / Maui Ultra Fins).

The wind and waves look set to continue for the foreseeable future, but with the wind expected to be more onshore and the waves slightly smaller in the morning, the plan is to start the Men’s Freestyle Single Elimination. Skippers’ meeting times as follows: All Times (GMT+2):

    - Freestyle - 8am - first possible start 8:30am

    - Slalom & Wave - 10am - first possible start 10:30am
