2017 Hvide Sande PWA World Cup

  • The Stage is Set For a Wet, Wild & Windy Week in Denmark

    FEATURED EVENT

    Denmark

After a short break the 2017 PWA World Tour is ready to resume as the men’s and women’s slalom fleets head for Hvide Sande, Denmark, for the Waterz Festival Hvide Sande PWA World Cup, which takes place between the 9th-14th September. And based on the current forecast we should be in for an epic event with a proper autumnal storm on the way, which should provide plenty of pulsating racing.

Hvide Sande is a small town in the middle of the Holmsland Dunes and placed around the artificial canal which connects Ringkøbing Fjord to the North Sea, in the western part of Central Denmark, formerly Ringkjøbing County. This small town is only home to around 3,500 inhabitants for much of the year, but during the months of July and August this can rise by as much to 20 times more with the area proving extremely popular with tourists looking for a quieter break away from city life and of course with watersport enthusiasts with the fjord creating a perfect playground for a vast array of sports. With the glassy flat water, it will be interesting to see whether the conditions favour anyone different after the most extreme stop of the tour in Fuerteventura.

    Ones to Watch

    Slalom

    Women’s

At the halfway stage in the season, Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) holds a commanding lead coming into Hvide Sande after claiming victories in both South Korea and Japan at the start of the year. The 26-year-old has barely put a foot wrong and if she can maintain her perfect record her in Denmark then she will have the 2017 PWA Women’s Slalom World Championship title sewn up with an event to spare. A top 4 finish here would guarantee that Offringa holds on to her title race lead no matter what - heading into New Caledonia - as she looks to complete a hat-trick of slalom world crowns - which would be her 4th slalom title.

    f78cf99c41.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

However, before that becomes a reality there’s still an awful lot of sailing ahead and with the forecast on offer, it really is an event where anything could possibly happen. In terms of the title race, there are realistically only two women who can now stop Offringa - (although it is not mathematically impossible for other sailors to win). Firstly, Turkey’s Lena Erdil (Starboard / Point-7 / AL360) - last year’s vice-world champion and current world No.2 - who has sailed solidly so far this year with 2nd and 3rd place finishes. The 28-year-old came so close to a maiden world title in 2016 but saw that dream slip through her fingers here as she missed out by just one place and she’ll be doing everything in her power to keep the here title race fight alive.

    e3b769478b.jpg

    Lena Erdil

Secondly, France’s Delphine Cousin Questel (Starboard / S2Maui) would be the other main threat as a former two-time world champion. However, the 26-year-old suffered a disappointing 11th place finish in Japan after her outhaul snapped and as a result she now has no room for error. So the pressure is now on, but if she could win the last two events of the year she would still have a chance at the title depending on how New Caledonia plays out. First things first though she has to concentrate on the task at hand here.

    JP17_sl_Delphine_Cousin_at_the_mark.jpg

    Delphine Cousin Questel

This season has also seen 25-year-old Esther de Geus (JP / Point-7) and 20-year-old Maëlle Guilbaud (Patrik / LoftSails) break through the ranks as new names began to emerge on the women’s tour. Both have performed excellently so far and are currently tied for 3rd in the overall rankings and they’ll be looking to keep cool heads as they aim to stay in the hunt for a place on the prestigious podium.

    7f3a8e662e.jpg

    Esther de Geus

However, behind them will be the likes of Marion Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails), who quickly put a disappointing start in South Korea - 11th - behind her to recover with a solid 3rd place in Japan, which sees her in 6th place coming into Hvide Sande. Also in the mix should be the Japan’s Ayako Suzuki (Tabou / GA Sails / Mystic), Norway’s Oda Johanne (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins), Turkish teammates Cagla Kubat (Starboard / Point-7) and Fulya Ünlü (Starboard / Point-7), while Anissa Mohrath (Tabou / GA Sails) will be hoping to perform at her home event.

    KR17_sl_Marion_Mortefon.jpg

    Marion Mortefon

    Men’s

Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) has been in irresistible form so far this season with two wins and a third place from the three events where it has been possible to gain a result. The 23-time world champions latest victory in Fuerteventura was vintage Albeau and with the current strong winds forecast, another victory could beckon in Denmark, which would put him on the verge of a 24th world title.Anto

    f1ed2edde8.jpg

    Antoine Albeau

However, while Albeau has opened up a decent lead he’ll be aware as anyone how quickly the tide can change and with 3 events to go he hasn’t yet shaken off reigning world champion - Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Point-7) - who is his closest challenger at the moment. The Italian endured a tricky start to the season but looked to be back to his best in Fuerte after a disastrous first race - as he then bounced back with 6 top 4 finishes from the next 7 races. If the 27-year-old can maintain that superb form then you wouldn’t want to bet against him defending his event title here from last year.

    00fe3759fb.jpg

    Matteo Iachino

Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails / Chopper Fins) was involved in the horror crash with Taty Frans (Starboard / GA Sails / Mystic) in Fuerteventura, but thankfully the Frenchman survived unscathed and he’s ready to continue the battle in his quest for a first world title. Coming into Hvide Sande, Mortefon currently sits in 3rd place.

    51e78b4f19.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon

Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Mystic) has gradually improved in each event so far this season with 9th, 5th, and 3rd place finishes thus far - the question is can he continue that upward trend here in Denmark? The Brit struck a couple of bullets in Fuerte and was in contention for the event title heading into the final race and you’d have to think he’s in with a decent shot for the podium again.

    7f48343372.jpg

    Ross Williams

If a result is gained in Hvide Sande, which it looks like it should be, then the discard will come into play and while Iachino, Mortefon and Williams all stand to benefit from potentially discarding their worst results so far, it is Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) who stands to gain the most. The 31-year-old has blown hot and cold so far this season - going from a brilliant victory in Japan to a disappointing 20th place in Costa Brava before stabilising the ship again with an assured display in Fuerte where he finished 5th. If he performs to the best of his ability then you can expect to see Quentel closing the gap on the current top 4.

    7fc1405ad5.jpg

    Julien Quentel

Antoine Questel (Starboard / S2Maui) has been Mr. Consistent so far with two 10th places and a 12th from the opening 3 events. The Frenchman has seen that consistency rewarded with 6th place in the overall rankings and he’ll be hoping to find another top 10 performance here.

    4ff92c2bce.jpg

    Antoine Questel

Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) will have fond memories of Hvide Sande having earned his first podium on the PWA World Tour here in 2016. The German is quickly establishing himself as one of the best slalom sailors in the world and he’ll be hoping he can conjure up the form that saw him finish in the top 3 last year to remain on course to break into the overall top 10 for the first time in his career come the end of the season.

    e9eb66b133.jpg

    Sebastian Kördel

Flying Dutchman Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / NorthSails) is also enjoying his best season to date - 8th overall at the moment - and the 24-year-old will be hoping to muster another top 10 finish here as he too attempts to break into the overall top 10 by the end of the year.

    a84bbef3e5.jpg

    Jordy Vonk

Elsewhere, Cyril Moussilmani (99NoveNove / Severne) currently occupies 9th place and he’ll be hoping to discard his 23rd place from Costa Brava, while fellow countryman Pascal Toselli (99NoveNove / LoftSails / Chopper Fins) could be on elf the biggest moves come the event of the event. Toselli started the year with a disastrous 29th in Japan, but has since recovered admirably with 4th and 8th place finishes respectively.

    181d000faf.jpeg

    Cyril Moussilmani

Taty Frans completes the top 10 coming into the Denmark, but the event has come too soon for him to have recovered from his injury sustained in Fuerteventura - the true is same for Ethan Westera (Tabou / GA Sails) and everyone from the PWA wishes them all the best with their recoveries.

After disappointing starts to the season - Ben van der Steen (Patrik / Gun Sails) and Cedric Bordes (Tabou / GA Sails) - both recorded their best results so far - 9th and 6th respectively - and both will be hoping to build a bit of momentum now heading into the second half of the season.

    2f575a5822.jpg

    Cedric Bordes

As always there’s plenty of other sailors who are more than capable of recording top 10 results and making finals, so also keep an eye out for Finian Maynard (99NoveNove / Gun Sails), Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne), Maciek Rutkowski (Tabou / GA Sails), Marco Lang (Fanatic / NorthSails) - who could be one of the biggest movers should he discard a 41st from Japan. Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) - who has been hot and cold so far and Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Mystic / Chopper Fins), who has finished 7th and 18th in the events he has attended this season.

    The Calm Before the Storm

    FEATURED EVENT

    Denmark

64 Men and 22 Women registered for the 2017 Waterz Hvide Sande PWA World Cup on a calm opening day in Denmark, which saw the sailors rigging up and preparing their equipment for what promises to be a windy next 5 days.

    DK17_ls_Hvide_Sande.jpg

    Hvide Sande HQ

Today was basically the calm before the storm with an area of low pressure expected to arrive from tomorrow - strengthening each day until Wednesday - which could see winds reach in excess of 40 knots to guarantee more exhilarating racing.

    DK17_ls_The_lull_before_the_storm.jpg

Rigged & Ready for the coming days

During a low key first day we briefly caught up with 23-time world champion and current world tour leader Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde):

Hey, Antoine, you’re leading the world tour just over halfway through the season - how are you feeling coming into Denmark and what have you been up to since Fuerte?

AA: “I’m feeling good coming into Denmark. The first day has been a waiting game with no wind, but the weather forecast looks really good for the next days with low pressure on the way we should get strong south, southwest and west winds over the next 5 days, so hopefully, we can complete a lot of slalom here.

Here’s a really good event as well as we have the girls competing again. Since Fuerte, I’ve just been at my place in Îl de Ré looking after my windsurfing and sailing school, so I haven't been sailing so much, but I’ve enjoyed working in my center.”

When you were checking the forecast for here and it showed strong winds did this make you think about different equipment options?

AA: ”No I didn’t change anything because we have to register our chosen equipment at the start of the year, so the decision is already made. I am hoping that we can use our small sails and boards again though.”

The other day there was a photo with you and your son, Alani, windsurfing… future world champion in the making?

AA: “I don’t know… we should put him on the board with a small sail, which was pretty funny.”

Thanks, Antoine and good luck for the contest.

After a quiet start, the forecast looks promising for tomorrow with the wind expected to increase throughout from 14-18 knots to 18-24 knots by the evening, which should hopefully allow the first races of the week to be completed. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 10am with the action commencing from 11am (GMT+2) onwards.

Highlights Day 1 - Hvide Sande PWA World Cup

As promised the racing sprung into life on the second day of the 2017 Waterz Hvide Sande PWA World Cup, which allowed the opening two races for the Men’s and Women’s fleets to be completed in winds of 8-20 knots. Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Point-7) couldn’t have wished for a better start as he came flying out the blocks to win both eliminations, while Lena Erdil (Starboard / Point-7 / AL360) heads up the women’s rankings after also making a strong start.

    DK17_sl_Slalom_start.jpg

    Action on Day 2

    Women’s

Lena Erdil (Starboard / Point-7 / AL360) leads the event at the close of play after making an excellent start to proceedings, which saw the 28-year-old open her account with a well-taken bullet before backing it up with a solid second place.

    DK17_sl_Lena_Takes_Race_one.jpg

    Lena Erdil celebrates

Erdil goes into day 3 with a two point lead over Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins), who had a slow start to the final in Elimination 1 meaning she had to settle for 4th place, before instantly hitting back with a clinical victory in the second elimination to keep herself firmly in contention and is now perfectly poised to pounce tomorrow.

    DK17_sl_Sarah_Quita.jpg

    Sarah-Quita Offringa

Meanwhile, Delphine Cousin Questel (Starboard / S2Maui) currently completes the top 3 on 6 points after 2nd and 4th place finishes, while fellow French woman Marion Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails) is still in the running in 4th.

    DK17_sl_Delphine_cruising.jpg

    Delphine Cousin Questel

One of the performances of the day has to go to Jenna Gibson (Fanatic / NorthSails), who was making her debut on the world tour and she hit the ground to take 3rd place in her first ever race. Unfortunately, the 20-year-old was then involved in a pile up in the second winners’ final resulting in a 10th which sees her sitting in 5th place in the current rankings. The Brit looks as though she is ready to make an instant transition to life on the world tour and could well challenge for the podium.

    DK17_sl_Jena_Gibson.jpg

    Jenna Gibson

Esther de Geus (JP / Point-7) and Maélle Guilbaud (Patrik / LoftSails) came into Denmark tied in joint 3, but both will want to quickly shake off their results from the first day of competition here as both suffered disappointing results - with de Geus finishing 7th and 14th, while Guillbaud had similar results with 8th and 12th places.

    Men’s

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Point-7) won the first ever event here last year and the Italian made a strong stake to successfully defend that crown as he produced a flawless display to win both of the eliminations completed today, which gives the reigning world champion a significant lead heading into the third day, as the rest of the usual suspects endured an indifferent day. At the close of play Iachino holds an 11.6 point advantage and his rivals will either need a mistake from Iachino - or wait for the first discard to come into play after race 4 for a chance to close the gap.

    DK17_sl_Matteo_celebrates.jpg

    Matteo Iachino dominates

    Ups and Downs

As mentioned aside from Iachino - who was the only man to qualify for both winners’ finals - the rest of the fleet suffered a mixed bag of results.

    - Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails / Chopper Fins) is currently Iachino’s closest challenger in second after finishing 3rd and 9th.

Sebastian Kördel (Starboard / GA Sails) currently completes the top 3 after finishing 11th and then 3rd. The German seems to enjoy himself on Danish waters with the 26-year-old earning his first podium finish here in 2016 and he could well repeat that feat yet.

    DK17_sl_Pierre_Mortefon.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon

    - Current world tour leader - Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) - suffered a shock semifinal exit as he narrowly missed out in 5th place and this represents the Frenchman’s worst start to an event this year, but you still wouldn’t count him out from staging a comeback - especially the stronger the wind gets.

    DK17_sl_Albeau_chases.jpg

    Antoine Albeau chases

    - Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) finds himself in 5th place after the opening two races. The 31-year-old made a solid start to proceedings, but then gave himself far too much to do in the semifinal of Elimination 2 and despite a valiant effort he just missed out in 5th place.

    DK17_sl_Julien_Quentel.jpg

    Julien Quentel

    - Bruno Martini (RRD / Point-7 / AL360) made a flying start to the event as he opened with a brilliant second place behind the Iachino, but has since seen the wheels come off after suffering an unfortunate quarterfinal exit in race 2 after Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / NorthSails) dropped his gybe leading no escape for the Italian - before then facing a second round exit in Elimination 3, which leaves him in joint 15th place with Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Mystic) The two sailors actually have the exact same counting results at the moment, but the Brit hit back with a 2nd place after a shock quarterfinal exit from the opening race and he is still in the running for Elimination 3.

    DK17_sl_Martini_Blocked.jpg

No way through for Bruno Martini

Maciek Rutkowski (Tabou / GA Sails) was one of the most consistent performers of the day and that consistency sees him rewarded with a 6th place in the current event rankings after the pole navigate his way into the winners’ final of the opening race - where he finished 8th. Rutkowski was then disqualified from the semifinal of Elimination 2 after a premature start, but sailed excellently in the losers’ final to claim 10th place.

    DK17_ls_Maciek_Rutkowski.jpg

    Maciek Rutkowski

Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde), Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Mystic / Chopper Fins), Tristan Algret (Starboard / Severne / Mystic / Chopper Fins), Mateus Isaac (Goya Windsurfing / Point-7) and Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard / Severne / Chopper Fins) complete the top 10 at this stage. The latter will feel slightly aggrieved with his disqualification from the 3rd elimination after thinking there was a break - only to try and rush to the start of his heat to then be disqualified for sailing through the start line the wrong way with 15 seconds to go.

    DK17_sl_Gonzalo.jpg

    Gonzalo Costa Hoevel

The forecast looks excellent for tomorrow with wind strong winds predicted for the entry of the day from the south-south-west in the region of 20-33 knots, which should see another busy day of action on the water. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 10am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 10:30am (GMT+2). Make sure you tune into www.pwaworldtour.com to follow all of the racing live.

Highlights Day 2 - Hvide Sande PWA World Cup

The third day of the 2017 Hvide Sande PWA World Cup had plenty of potential to produce an excellent day of racing, but unfortunately the seaweed, which wasn’t present yesterday, put a major spanner in the works for racing, which meant that despite the excellent wind conditions on offer no heats were completed.

    DK17_sl_Cagla_Kubat.jpg

    Moody Danish skies

That means that Lena Erdil (Starboard / Point-7 / AL360) and Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Point-7 / Shamal Sunglasses) continue to lead the event with 3 days to go and the hope is that tomorrow’s more offshore (west-south-west) wind direction will blow away the seaweed and allow the racing to resume.

    Jump of the Day

While conditions might not have been suitable for racing they were perfectly fine for freesailing and throughout the day most of the fleet made it on to the water at some point. With the wind in the region of 20-30 knots most of the guys were on 7.8s and the girls and 7.0s, which led to some good old fashioned floaty jumps. Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails / Chopper Fins) wins the award for jump of the day as he clocked up some serious air time.

    DK17_sl_Pierre_big_air.jpg

    Pierre Mortefon

The sailors will meet again tomorrow at 10am for the skippers’ meeting and the wind shouldn’t be an issue again with 20-25 knots currently forecast, so seaweed depending the racing should resume from 10:30am (GMT+2) onwards.

  • 10:00 It's ON! Like we hoped the overnight offshore wind has blown the seaweed, which caused all the problems yesterday away, and it looks like we are in for a full days racing with winds between 10-19 knots already and that wind is expected to stay all day. Elimination 3 of the Men's and Women's fleets coming up from 10:30am - stay tuned!

    !!

ja, ich habe gestern den Liveticker mal die ganzen Stunden im Schnelldurchgang durchgesprungen ... Wind war on & off
